This highway has changed so much over the years and in my opinion has always been one of the less congested commuting routes into downtown St. Paul. The removal of the stoplights with the Wakota Bridge project and the Hastings bridge project was/is impressive. The concrete overlay they did actually makes the road drivable.
Eluko79, trains nearby Newport where I grew up riding at Amtrak for trip to Boston back in 1997! Good times! It went through Red Wing, Lake City, and Wabasha (and probably La Crosse I think). It was fun to watch many places on the train! Awesome! I want to go it again!
Thank you so much for this fantastic video! I'm an old MN. native: born raised in So.MPLS. My step mother resides in St.Paul and lives there still. Again, thank you and I'll be back for more.
I took this route once in high school enroute to Minneapolis/St Paul. It must have been 1999. I dont remember much of it. I'll have to travel it again sometime soon! 1982Wisconsin
Man, I am so glad i found your videos! We lived in Red Wing for a while, My wife ran the theater there and I ran the On-Cue store. Moved to Hastings so I could run the ON-Cue in Shakopee, was a long, but in retrospect, a great commute. Miss that drive between Red Wing/ Hastings and St.Paul, but was a bit twitchy in winter pre-cell phones! REAALLY miss the Newport Drive in with their home brewed Root Beer and the Canadian bacon barbecue burgers!!!! Thanks for posting!
Great video. Nice soundtrack. Really liked the informative facts (had no idea, for example, about 3M's involvement in the Apollo missions). I continue to be impressed with Minnesota's ability to construct nice-looking freeways.
Another perfectly edited vid, Luko! Your videos always make me so nostalgic for MN. Although i don't think i've ever taken that route, the scenery just reminds me of home! Down here it's all palm trees & short grass, which is nice....but i still love MPLS 4 ever!!
Nice video ! :) US-61 for me is quite interesting highway, and I watched your other videos of the same highway, would love to see more videos in the future! Keep up the good work !
Great video! My dad worked for both 3M and Control Data during the Apollo missions, and, as a kid, I got a set of the 3 famous astronaut prints, complete with the museum labels on the back. Sorry to see Minnesota has those horrible high-tension wire center barriers (motorcycle cheese-graters). Too bad the billions of pounds of thrown away palastic bottles in this country aren't recycled and made into safety covers for those deathtraps. Have you ever considered a compass on your vids?
Eluko, You should do a video of 169 from the MN River to 610. It definitely has unique features from the sharp 15 mph interchange ramps to steep hills since it use to be CR 18. I am curious, what videos do you have coming up next?
Great video luke and I was wondering if the urban speed limit in Minnesota is 60-65 mph and rural at 70 mph? In the video the speed limit was 35-60mph, but then becomes 65mph this is different in NJ and the northeast 55 mph urban and 65 mph rural.
This definitely wasn't filmed at 5:30 PM, nor 7:30 AM based on the volume of traffic. Rush hour traffic is just about completely abysmal on all free ways and high ways from 3:30-6:30 in all areas of the metro. Daybreak filming shows the only time in which it is pleasurable to drive in the twin cities is when no one else is awake. When this is the case, it can be a pretty nice ride.
3:18 or so...The Boyd motel...cheapskate that I am I've stayed there more than once whilst visiting your fair city...not sure how it was when you grew up...but the pancake place next door was nice! lol

Looked like a pretty relaxing ride right up until the I-494 crossing. Also nice to see a drive over the old Hastings bridge.
Right thorough were I live! Loved it
Chicane - saltwater. Excellent choice for the soundtrack. I really enjoy all of your videos like this. Keep up the good work.
Great drive! Really enjoyed your the color transitions and graceful speed changes mid-video. Excellent editing, Luke!

Awesome video! Great personal note about where you grew up, that's cool.
Awesome. I've never see that route into St. Paul before.
Nice video! I truly enjoy seeing your hometown drives in Minnesota, which is where I am going to be for college next year.
US-61 officialy ends in Forest lake, MN, but county roads and state highways complete it's route to Canada
Thanks for the ride! Loved the video.
Thanks for responding. I live near the triangle its a BIG improvement over what was there before.
Music fits perfectly for this route. Makes me want to see Minnesota.
Great video Luke, I enjoyed the ride!
I think that Interstate 35 should've gone to the Canadian border instead of 61
Good stuff! enjoyed it, well executed as usual.
I live in Cottage Grove..cool to see you drive though there

Minneapolis+St Paul = Dallas+Ft. Worth. :p
3:13 the uploader says he is a rail fan indirectly.

great video as always
Nice video Luke!
Cool song
Yeah, Missouri has about a billion miles of those high-tension cables as well. I've seen them slice an SUV more or less in half at 75mph.
That's some scary driving by that white pick up on Warner road at the end of the video

Any plans to film 610? its a sweet drive.
Hey eluko could you please tel me where you play firefall-Strange way in the background.
I occassionally go there for Treasure Island Casino.
I love this! Great video. Love all the trees there. Have you been to Colorado?
Thanks and yes but it was some time ago.

The bridge at 0:28 has been gone for years.
What song did you use for this vid? It sounds familiar. Nice vid, by the way - usual high-quality work.
“Saltwater” by DJ Tatana
well high hastings bridge is gone now
1:12 another traffic light and a 60 mile per hour speed limit?
With sign that says prepare to stop when flashing
3:18 or so...The Boyd motel...cheapskate that I am I've stayed there more than once whilst visiting your fair city...not sure how it was when you grew up...but the pancake place next door was nice! lol
1:2345 3m?
1:01 a stop light when the speed limit is 60 miles per hour?
The light now has a flashing yellow light option
If you take 61 north you will head in Canada right?
No US 61 ends in Wyoming MN
