The Engine check light coming reason may be the Air Mass flow is chocked or the air filter may damage as you mention that you cruze not getting accelerate and instantly pickup i'm face the same problem in my scorpio after changing the Air Mass flow sensor everything was fine hope it's will work

Get your intake manifold, map and maf sensor cleaned. Get EGR and egr cooler cleaned. You'll also see 16-17kmpl.
