- The back of house behind the robots needs designing, what are your thoughts? Blank canvas really…. Getting the cubicles out and sorted really for installing this coming week, lifting the concrete panels out of the end of the shed without builder supervision what could go wrong? 😂😂
in 2009 i had no experience of farming or the realities that came with it. That soon changed when I met my other half Roy, I had a job as a carer and in every spare moment threw myself into farming. I had only ever driven a Nissan Micra and had experience with horses, I learnt the hard way as nobody had the time to show me and soon after arriving I found myself mothering on calves to three quarter bred limmy cows. We spent every available moment on the farm between our day jobs. Fast forward to 2016 two children later we moved into our very own farm overlooking the northern Pennines, Laitha.
we are in a transitional period at present and will finally be milking cows and making the final switch later this year, after years of planning and implementing infrastructure we will be milking 120 Jersey cows on two Lely robots. This will be a huge change and a steep learning curve

I am overjoyed to be a farmer. I feel so fortunate every day to wake up and do what I love and even better share it with the world and hope it inspires more young people from Preston to spread their wings and think outside the box the world doesn’t need more childcare workers or hairdressers it needs more farmers.

The chap who rents my mother in laws grazing arrived with tractor and cattle float trailer wit a chicken on the drawbar , 25mile journey and crossed the Erskine Bridge. 😅😊😅😅

I shouldn't worry about the dead space as yet get the main cow shed and robots fitted out and the spare space will find a use but as a suggestion maybe a calf house so you can have calving pens a pen to put calves in and easy access to the milk for calf feeding

If you get a bolt the same thread as the lifting hooks and cut the threads off one side it'll help clean the holes without jamming up. Just like a proper tap for rethreading!

Hi Charlotte, I like that you are updating us daily with shorter videos with alots of different content. You will only build one new Jersey Dairy, so it's nice to have it all captured on video. Looks like you are building a giant red meccano set of cubicles and I hope all the bolts etc have been delivered. Your lucky to have spare areas in the big shed cause you never know what's you might need in the future. Your poor cat is lonely and just wants to be around you and on the camera getting more exposure. You may have to put a special cat seat in the car between the kids. Ha Ha. Good work as usual. Great video as usual, you are absolutely right about the importance of doing the job that suits what you are doing and not worrying about the future direction of the farm the reality is that the big job that you are sure is going to be the be all and end all for years and years to come will probably be obsolete and completely rejigged in less than 20 years in my experience, it’s the little things that need to be done very well because they will still be there in 100 years time. My father and I did a big job on the yard 40 years ago we completely remodelled it about 20 years ago and spent most of last summer (sic.) pulling it down and digging it up to make room for the new parlour and calf shed. It’s called progress according to my lads and of course they’re right!
Your not wrong I suppose it’s sad when you have built stuff up and it’s changed and knocked down. but then again happy because you have seen it used and used well :) yes nothing lasts forever

That area could have a cow brush or two, and a rock salt tub. Could also have a free-choice vitamin area.

My farther load cattle box with hay year a go the cat went in warm hay was found in it 200 miles away came back in warm cab

The pieces of metal with holes in we call ‘clamping plates’ for the panels. No idea if that’s the right word but that’s what we call them!!

Obviously the best way to find out how to deploy the cubicles is to simply do a survey of the cattle

i don't think you will know how everything is going to work until you start using it / have the cows in place ........so i wouldn't worry about that space for now you might find you need it for something you hadn't thought you would need... have you got a loose housing area cos if you have a sick cow / had a difficult calving / milk fever /staggers etc.......a loose housing area is better than cubicles just till they get better so that space could be ideal for that. cross breeding seems to be all the rage in the dairy world these days you might decide to experiment with that to get a bit more size into your cows, keep your options open

It's a shame with that spare room going to waste you could have had few more cubicles to increase the herd. Could you make some calving pens in that space. ? Its looks like a lot of spare space. Going to waste.
No round the back is a shedding area a vet pen and foot bath but in what order??? And how will they be best laid out?
how will you TB the cows in the now shed ?
We have a handling system up the yard tb testing will be done in there
Do you have an isolation area for sick/quarintened animals;FarmerP has had cattle go down with TB
We have a stable in the old fashioned farm yard, that was always going to be the isolation pen, Nelly Gray has taken it over but it would soon revert to the job x
