Massacre at Matewan - Law Enforcement Perspective

  • I arrived a little late at the town of Matewan, hoping to make it my first stop on the way to Blair Mountain. However, I found a flyer for a tour done by a relative of one of the killed Baldwin Felts detectives. His insight was taken to heart, and I plan on putting out a more detailed video soon - splicing together scenes of the movie. My opinion is that the truth is somewhere in the middle. The movie Matewan clearly had inaccuracies that I will go into later (there were no communists leading the strikes, and a teenager was never killed on the direction of C.E. Lively). These events all happened at different times in the region, but few happened in Matewan.

Neat perspective; but I'd still have to say the miners were in the right. Company scrip and other practices make that evident. Sid might have been less than moral but was ultimately on the right side.

I think James more or less agreed with the miners, but still feels bitter that the media and popular retellings have made the event seem like 3 brave miners and a good cop killed a bunch of crooked cops. He wants to set the record straight, but may have gotten wrapped up in believing totally what the detectives claimed. I really don’t know if I can believe that 400 drunk miners could keep quiet and not be noticed by the cops.

@@johnposey1455. They were not cops. They are private security. They DO NOT HAVE AUTHORITY TO ENFORCE LAW.

I met this man in matewan and questioned him for a while. He is the real article. Never stuttered or stammered. Very knowledgeable and to the point.

Mrs McCoy, a religious woman, was still mad about the loss of Roseannes baby.
This part is reading between the lines:
The little McCoy girl was very pretty. She and Cotton Top were 2 of the few blonds here and were both special. They were sneaking seeing each other, doing nothing else.
    This is from a McCoy:
Randal (possibly saying, "they ain't doin nothin" infuriated Mrs. McCoy.
She grabbed Randal up, knocking over the kerosene lamp, and throws him in
    The hog lot.
Then, blind with rage, she comes out shooting with both hands.
She'd had a nervous breakdown from all the violence.
Vance had come looking for Cottontop.
I'm not sure if its right to bring this out, but I'm old, and think somebody needs to
    Study this.

I try not to talk or think about this much, but Sid Hatfield was a real controversial star here. Many don't think he was a Hatfield, but was drawing off the fame of
Randall McCoys wife, who could also shoot with both hands at same time.
The feud, which ended in 1890, was still fresh in everyones minds.

  • @Karen-00004
    @Karen-00004 Před měsícem

It was eye for an eye law here then and the Hatfields had told Cotton to stay away
    From there.
In the movie, Cotton says, "The Hatfields hornswaggled me with love"
I think the younger Hatfields would tease Cotton about that pretty little
Girl, knowing he had a crush on her.

Randal was Confederate, too. Back then, men headed the homes, but
The women were yelling their brains out.
Most outsiders left this little valley alone, and it was mostly common law.

Im wondering who told all those miners to come to Matewan that day.
It sounds like they were more of an audience than participants.
It sounds like a few men who knew each other had a shoot-out.

I am so sick of the lies, but all I know is hearsay.
The 2 families were friends. Vance took the blame to protect Randals
Wife whod accidentally killed her daughter.
The unionizing was acontinuation of the feud, which was a continuation of the Civil War.
This stuff is talk from both families that Ive heard thepast 60 years.
The Hatfields were clannish, shy, and possibly in line to the Throne.
The McCoys were educated and popular. Randal even ran a ferry.
The Hatfields had put a Governor in office. Unsure of the year.
The McCoys had to keep pace?

    Thank You
    Think of the timing:
Civil War was 30 yrs before Feud end.
Matewan Massacre 30 yrs after Feud end.
The Paw Paw incident was Capt. Anse Hatfields firing squad, Logan Wildcats,
    Confederate Military, I think.

    But i believe it does.

Were these men who were trying to form a union of the 2 clans or mostly
    Outsiders?
My papaw, who some say was a union organizer, was an outsider from
Tennessee. He was also a Minister but I dont think he was at Matewan
    That day.

Back then, women didnt have as many job opportunities and hooking was seen
As a good way to get a husband. It was much more acceptable.

What dif does it make if he was gay?
If so, she mayve been his trophy wife, and trophy wives get mad.
She was said to have been the most cultured, well-dressed woman here.
I wonder if she dated Sid before she met the mayor.

Theres always the religious people fighting it, and this area had some of the
Toughest. But most of the US accepted it, mostly because they were
Practical farm people who saw humans as just a step above animals.
