  • It's always a good idea to check your drive belt often but even more so if you had to drive down a chip @ seal road. This is an extreme example of wht can happen to your belt.

I have had a rock hole in my belt since before Spyders in the Ozarks. Keeping awn eye on it. removed the rock, flattened the hole with a pair of pliers and some of that intstant flat goo that Lamonster sells for tires. So far so good. I did have one belt that looks almost that bad after a belt tensioner roller failed. I found the damage while getting ready to go home from the last Spyders in the Hills and pulling a 622 trailer. Made it home safe and replaced the belt.

Are you talking about Recycled Ashphalt as chip and seal?

My wife has a Spyder, and I ride a VStar 1300...my belt alone is over $500! Here in northern Wyoming, many residential streets get the C&S treatment, and even some of the county and state roads. Unfortunately, to get from point A to point B means you have no choice but to ride on it unless you want to cancel the trip or ride multiple hundreds of miles out of the way. Really puts ya' between a rock and a hard place...ba dump tsch!

Chip seal is everywhere here in rural New Brunswick, Canada.
In less than 250m, I managed to "catch" 6 rocks in my belt & rear pulley. Shook the shyte out of my machine so bad I had to stop.
    6 holes...
Every time I wash my machine, I inso the belt. It'll be replaced when the "replacement" front pulley gets installed.
I have no option but to ride in t, or I can't get home, in many instances.
    That stuff is deadly.
PS, another PSA - If you've had your front sprocket inspection done by BRP & are told it's "good fir another 16,000 km." Don't take that as gospel.
    I was told this & I didn't get 900 km & it went.
Be diligent & monitor any odd sensation or sound. It's hard to see the wear, as it happens on the transmission side.

Depends on how the road is done. Most are sprayed with tack oil then a layer of chip rock is spread over the top and then the road is packed with a roller then broomed to remove the loose stuff in order to avoid this problem....OCCAISIONALLY you might find a road where little of this is done. If you find one of these and start hearing the chip rock coming off the road/hitting the vehicle then you may want to turn around and go another way....Otherwise you should be okay.

Have never seen DOT broom over a chip and seal road. Around here they drop hot tar, drop the chips, maybe roll it and leave it. That stuff will tear up a vehicle. Thanks for the video Lamont.

Same thing happened to me and I had to ryde over 600 mile s to reach a dealership for a new belt. The belt held together but it was nerve racking not knowing if it would hold up. When we got home I installed an RT Inside Belt Guard :-)

The bike you’re leaning on it has an interesting handlebar. What handlebar is that? And can it be put on a 2020 RT

Any solutions for an issue of repeatedly breaking the saddlebag handle due to the cable sticking?
