Half-formed thought based on Brand's comment at 9:30: the old testament was man vs elements/nature/the other. New testament is man vs his own tribe and vs himself. I can see this argument in the religious sense, but I wonder (as a evolutionary psychologist) what type of evidence for this could come from anthropology or history. Did our trend toward introspection begin so long ago? Surely within some individuals but probably not en masse. How quickly did individualism spread (Christian or otherwise)?

Regarding God's command to sacrifice his son Isaac: I see this as a test of Abraham's faith, but also as an object lesson. Abraham climbs to the high place with Isaac where the sacrifice will take place. Isaac is put on the altar. Isaac questions his father about the sacrifice and Abraham replies that God will provide. When the altar was ready, just before Abraham set it alight the Lord stopped him. Just then, Abraham notices a ram caught in a bush. God instructs Abraham to sacrifice the ram instead of Isaac. Its an object lesson or metaphor in that later on, when Jesus came, God was willing to sacrifice His Son, but in that instance, no ram was substituted for Christ. The ram in the Abrahamic story serves to show why the sacrificial system was in place before Jesus came: it was a looking forward to the time when the true "lamb of God" (as Jesus is called) would die in our place.
An interesting point about Abrahams call to sacrifice Isaac is that the nations surrounding the area where Abraham lived practised child sacrifice and God made it clear this practise was detestable. So when he gets told to sacrifice his son, Abraham trusts in God that somehow the sacrifice of Isaac would not happen. He doesnt know what will happen, but he knows God's character. We can see this when Abraham leaves his servants and pack animals to take Isaac up the mountain to be sacrificed. Abraham told the servants to wait until "we return." He knew Isaac would be coming down the mountain with him.
Abrahams story is a call to adventure in some sense, but much more than that it is about a godly man who was called to leave his comfort zone and face many trials. It was also the beginning of God's plan of progressive revelation, where He started off by calling a people out from the other nations to be His own people, through whom Gods plan for our salvation would be incrementally revealed.
I've also been thinking about that a lot, that the canaanites were doing those horrific sacrifices so that would have had huge relevance to how to interpret that story, and how people would have heard it at the time. It's v. enlightening to hear how he said 'we return'... Thanks for your comment.

Why people get stuck on the words Russell uses is kind of interesting. I'm sure you have not improved your language since 17. As I continue to learn, I find my vocabulary also improves because words matter. While he may use big words and cause you to get lost in his ideas I would suggest continuing to learn because one day you may find yourself only able to speak the same way to get your full thoughts across.
