Martin Scorsese on Killers of the Flower Moon, the Late Great Robbie Robertson & Being an Altar Boy

  • Martin talks about his short documentary “Italianamerican,” putting his mother’s gravy and meatballs recipe in the credits, working with his longtime friend and collaborator Robbie Robertson, religion being a big theme in his movies, being an altar boy at St. Patrick’s Cathedral, his new film “Killers of the Flower Moon,” Osage tribal leaders acting in the movie, and being more of a city person.

What's the association between Robbie Robertson & the Prairies? He's a native of Southeastern Ontario. His mom was from the Grand River First Nations. My best friend's granddad was Chief Monture of the Grand River Six Nations. We were in school together in the 60s. She is the reason I first learned about the Six Nations in Ontario. It sure wasn't because Indigenous History was taught in school.
When I was a kid, the history of residential schools was hidden, though we lived in an area surrounded by historic Indigenous land. That history never really came to light until decades later. White children weren't taught about the inhumanity of ripping native-born young children from their only families, and the hateful indignities they suffered in attempts to "civilize" them.
At the same time I was absorbing some of the fascinating history of Indigenous people in southern Ontario, Robbie was playing with Ronnie Hawkins at the Le Coq d'Or as a 17-yr old. We were only a couple of years apart at the time, and there was no mention of his heritage until many years later.
I was a huge fan of his music, from his time with Ronnie Hawkins through all his years as part of "The Band". His solo work was equally interesting, though lesser known.
Between his death and the passing of Gordon Lightfoot this year, 2023 is a year we lost 2 Canadian Music icons. Sad indeed.

I am very grateful that Scorsese is still alive and still making movies. It's like Kubrick or Kurosawa were still alive. He is a powerhouse in cinema and there will never be another one I am sure of that. He may be 81 but his mind is sharp as a knife and from what I've read, he already knows what his next movie will be... how about that? He is a machine. I love a lot of other directors but if I were to choose just one, it would be Scorsese.

Just got back from the cinema, still unpacking. Loved that the music never tells you how to feel, just sets the tone and vide and place and time, but not emotion. I can’t think of a film that deserves the world “harrowing” more, just overwhelming sad, but insanely watchable, no way it was 3 and a half hours! Not sure if it tops Goodfellas (Ray Liota…c’mon) but what a masterpiece.
