Top class analysis from Neville on coping mechanisms. I think those basic questions he mentions: "did you never thought you'd have a bad game", "did you'd never think you'd make a mistake as a defender" were so simple but actually so eye opening. This issue is Maguire doesn’t (atleast openly) accept that he’s not in good form through the responses he’s had during interviews, he did say he made a mistake after the last England match but played it down really. He can only deal with these issues properly by accepting the fact and working on it. He said about not being that bad because managers keep playing him - its actually good for him that ETH isn’t letting him start for United.

i appreciate them speaking on this. I really do because it’s very important and it’s often times put aside. but where was this sort of segement support for the likes of Paul pogba? “Bullying” that’s what we’re resorting to? Paul pogba actually showed over years he was world class and had about 2 actual seasons of bad performances. Turned up in the Europa league final, World Cup tournament, time at juventus that got him a ballon d’or nomination for etc. Harry maguire has done well in a world cup and euros (with favourable matchups btw) which doesn’t even come up to 30 games. If we can give criticism to pogba which is fine because he had a very big decline, why is there so much more leeway for a player that hasn’t achieved anywhere near as much as he has? Even if you don’t wanna talk about pogba specifically, there are players who have had FAR worse criticism said about them compared to maguire (xhaka, aubameyang, sterling, ozil etc) yet he gets the support of all these pundits and journalists when it all boils down to him just not being that good.

He is probably sick of it especially when it is not just him that is the problem but he is the only one getting sounded out and abused.. I have given up reading comments almost everywhere when it comes to United posts, videos etc as it is almost a garauntee that within 3 comments there will be someone hurling abuse at him even when he isn't playing. I mean I kept seeing peoplesaying how the City loss was all down tom him,i've seen people saying they wish he killed himself, hoping he rots in hell and many other things. It's getting ridiculous.
Am I fan of his? No, I don't think we should have signed him and been saying that from the moment we were rumoured to be getting him, but his form is not all down to him. Has he made mistakes, yes many but when you are not the quickest defender and your midfield and other defenders don't help you out then you are going to have problems. Both for England and United he hasn't exactly been helped by those around him. Would I play him if I was a manager? No, what I would do is advise him to spend a few months working with a sports psychologist and get his head right, one that will help him learn to cope with the abuse and channel it into performances becausenow the pressure on him to perform when he plays is so high, he knows if he messes up he's goingto get death threats, told to suicide, etc. No player can perform through that when their head isn't right and can't block out the hate.

Of course bullying and social media threaths are not okay in any shape of form. The thing is that with Maguire, the reason there has been so much criticism is that he has played for both United and England when he shouldn't have played simply because his performances were not good enough. This has been going on for a couple of years now and i think especially United fans know what i'm talking about. For example this international break, Tomori did not start a single game for England and clearly had a better last season and is CURRENTLY a better player than Maguire. Neville & Carragher have to understand that fans get frustrated when Maguire is playing and better players on form are sitting on the bench.

I have often likened United to England, both in terms of the boring football, but also the managers (at least under Ole and Rangnick with United), and their habit of picking players on their names rather than their form. When players are in poor form and you continue to start them, they end up believing themselves to be indispensable.
No player has the right to always start. Unfortunately, Southgate has the age-old England manager's annoying habit of keeping the same crappy individuals in the squad, e.g. Sterling, Maguire, Shaw, Mount, etc etc. Even Kane is only contributing by scoring penalties.

It's pathetic how suddenly the English media does a 180 to protect Maguire immediately before the World Cup. Pogba was criticised just as much for performances no where near as bad as Maguire's, and no one batted an eyelid. In fact, Sky pundits actively took part in the criticism.
Maguire is being piled on because his performances over the last 1.5 years have been straight up horrible ,end of story. He repeatedly makes mistakes that literally decide matches on its own, yet he is undeservedly given chances and selections over players who deserve it far more. The only justification people come up with for Maguire's continued appearances in either United or England shirts is a finals appearance in the Euros, yet Pogba was a Serie A and World Cup winner and no one gave a crap.
The worst part is the captaincy has gotten to Maguire's head and rather than showing some humility about his terrible performances, he mouths off on interviews about how good he is and why he deserves to be in team selections. If he showed even the slightest amount of humility then he wouldn't be getting flamed anywhere near as much.
As Neville pointed out near the end, Maguire is hardly the first player to be criticised like this. The difference is the other players were actually good, and they won fans over again with repeatedly good performances on the pitch. They didn't talk about how good they were and why they deserved to play, they showed it. Maguire on the other hand continues to show why he shouldn't play and can only put words to why he should. The guy has an inferiority complex and is obsessed with trying to live up to the United shirt and the captaincy when it is clearly above him and he should let go.
This narrative now that Maguire's criticism is unjustified and should be stopped is ridiculous. His performances justify his criticisms more than anyone. In the top level of football, you're competing against the top 0.00001% and you are supposed to be judge solely based on your performance. Maguire's performance has been absolute crap for a long time and he simply does not deserve to be playing over many other players. If Maguire can't handle the pressure or the criticism, that's the limit to his ability and he should come to terms with it, rather than living in delusion.

A lot of the criticism is towards Southgate’s decision to pick him. Who cares if the manager trusts him, if you aren’t playing week in week out, you can’t start for an international game, let alone get a call up.

I appreciate that these guys are highlighting the abuse and mental health toll that constant battering takes on a player - that is understandable and commendable. What I am not happy about is the constant backing of a poor player who constantly gets backed despite being subpar. Maguire at 29 has not achieved anything worthy of praise. We keep hearing “he was in the Euros team of tournament, euro final, WC semi’s etc. that’s was 4 and 2 years ago. His firm has been terrible at club level during that time and there are better players than him. Sometimes you just have to call a spade a spade - Maguire is just not good enough and what makes it worse is his arrogance in interviews never taking accountability and pushing blame on others

The majority of the criticism on Maguire that I've seen is based on his on pitch form and play. Of course some nutters go too far and they are out of order but then people try to retrospectively paint any criticism as over the line. His current form doesn't warrant an England call up - that's all. If he gets back in the team and puts in good performances then people will happily accept that.

If he spoke the truth once in a while more be more endearing to him. Also do your talking on the pitching not leaking stories this past internationals through a third party.

The England team isn’t randomly selected on who’s got the better match rating on WhoScored. The reason they’ve had such good runs in the last couple tournaments is because they have a solid core of players that know each other inside out. Nothing to be gained by chopping and changing every month.

I think Neville hit the right word. I think ManU and the England national team need to make decisions to protect him. Just admit that it hasn't gone the way they expected him to perform. Relieve him of his duties as captain and player for a big club/national team and slowly phase him out and move on. It's getting uncomfortable and unnecessary to crap on him on and on and on. It's just toxic. BTW for both teams, the problems are due to the collective and top-down as well. It's not ALL on Maguire even though he does deserve due blame. Just stop prolonging it. This only happens when there are no grown ups in the room to handle the situation. ManU handle it! England national team, handle it! and MOVE ON!

I feel bad for Harry Maguire but there is a reason it has reached this point. Obviously it's not his fault that he wasn't at his best and managers kept choosing him and he was EXTREMELY protected by the media being English. BUT it's also about his attitude during this whole time. As a captain, there has been no leadership at all, no frustration at losses, no frustration with teammates to do better, no passion whatsoever. Also, he messes up at such crucial moments and people have only recently realized this, but as a United fan watching, you could always see the mistakes and bad passes he makes and him getting no blame. The media kept going on about Pogba, Fred etc. but there was a huge problem at the back. On top of that, his overall attitude is so arrogant. The Greece incident, pointing fingers at teammates, then coming out at press conferences making arrogant comments like 'If I was bad I wouldn't play' etc. The current situation is all a build up of all these events over the last 2-3 years and it's not hard to see why so many fans have lashed out like this. That being said, no one deserves this treatment and I hope he can turn things around at United.

I think this is important to hear the side from footballers who have been through what maguire is going through. I've been critical of maguire but more because as the captain of United he deflects the blame on his other players and managers and doesn't take the blame himself. Fernandes after our loss to City as our captain said first I take the blame and then the rest of the players.

Weve all seen players over the years get abuse from the stands and take it on the chin but not being able to run or hide even on social media is something footballers have ever had to deal with. Nobody should wish adversity like this on anyone. I’m not a United fan or even an England fan, but I want Harry Maguire to be at his best. I want my in-form team to beat the other in-form team with all the players at their best. When Maguire is confident and in a system that harnesses his strengths, he’s a top class centre back. Put a prime Maldini on the halfway line and ask him to play the way teams do these days and he’d struggle to. Not saying Maguire is that level but it’s sad to see the mental toll of such an ill-fit. It’s not his fault that United paid £80m, and that’s the reason he can’t get a move somewhere that’s better for him. Hope all goes well for him soon.

And as for his somewhat decent performances for England the majority of the time England we’re playing lesser opponents and wasn’t tested and also he plays in a back 5 with 2 defensive midfielders sitting in front of him he is protected so much in that system nothing to do with how good a player he might be

Also to say Maldini couldn’t of played with a high line is laughable one of the best defenders to ever read the game would know when to drop back and when to make the press he would be just fine
Where with Maguire he is the most reactive defender I’ve ever seen he never reads the game or reads the player he never anticipates what a opponent is going to do he only ever reacts to what the have done and that’s one of the main reasons he looks so wild and clumsy you cannot play against world class players and be trying to react to what they are doing all the time you have to read the game know when to stand or go to the ground or when to drop back or when to press and Harry hasn’t a clue
