Great to see former players opening up about their coping mechanisms to criticism when they were playing, especially because there was a bigger stigma around mental health discussions then

Top class analysis from Neville on coping mechanisms. I think those basic questions he mentions: "did you never thought you'd have a bad game", "did you'd never think you'd make a mistake as a defender" were so simple but actually so eye opening. Be kinder to yourself and accept the imperfect nature of being human.
That’s just not the way football is though. See the way the fans treat managers, players, referees even they make perfectly good decisions. Most football fans are perfectly fine, but there’s a fairly large amount that take out the frustrations of their own lives on anyone they can. It’s sad but too far gone now.

Pretty good summary regarding the mental toll the media has on a football player these days.

@@matthewsawko6222 His attributes will essentially have to get him out of the funk he is in though. They aren't mutually exclusive points. Yes he is absolutely low on confidence. Whatever that means and how that is resolved in anyone's guess. But the point there is true. He doesn't have fundamental basics and will absolutely always be targeted by stronger opposition. He turns like a cruise liner. The ball will absolutely always be played in behind him. And that is the most basic analysis that can be carried out on Maguire. I'd agree that people are piling on to him but he is captain of Man United. He is absolutely subject to criticism and has, and let's be frank here, been absolutely diabolical for about 18 months. This isn't a blip. The Saka and Beckham examples are awful and inexcusable but they are based on 2 specific incidents that are not indicative of their own general form. Those examples don't work.

Social media for sure hasn't helped. I really hope that the players get the help they need when it becomes too much. Great and important video💪🏻 its important to speak to someone when youre having a bad time so its nice to see gary and jamie talk about theire experience with it
This issue is Maguire doesn’t (atleast openly) accept that he’s not in good form through the responses he’s had during interviews, he did say he made a mistake after the last England match but played it down really. He can only deal with these issues properly by accepting the fact and working on it. He said about not being that bad because managers keep playing him - its actually good for him that ETH isn’t letting him start for United.
A period of bad form, like a striker who struggles to score. If Harry chats with a good sports psychologist, gets over his injury and keeps training, he will be fine and soon return to playing.
i appreciate them speaking on this. I really do because it’s very important and it’s often times put aside. but where was this sort of segement support for the likes of Paul pogba? “Bullying” that’s what we’re resorting to? Paul pogba actually showed over years he was world class and had about 2 actual seasons of bad performances. Turned up in the Europa league final, World Cup tournament, time at juventus that got him a ballon d’or nomination for etc. Harry maguire has done well in a world cup and euros (with favourable matchups btw) which doesn’t even come up to 30 games. If we can give criticism to pogba which is fine because he had a very big decline, why is there so much more leeway for a player that hasn’t achieved anywhere near as much as he has? Even if you don’t wanna talk about pogba specifically, there are players who have had FAR worse criticism said about them compared to maguire (xhaka, aubameyang, sterling, ozil etc) yet he gets the support of all these pundits and journalists when it all boils down to him just not being that good.
From a fan of Ozil, I think it probably due to Maguire never accumulate any social media presense or fanbase as those players. I don' t know what Pogba did for United but he had enough supporters with France and Juve. Also, Neville and other sky pundits are old school defenders. They emphasized more with defenders working his as s for a system rather than star attackers showing off their individual creative talents.
@@Account.for.Comment I can see that, but it doesn’t change that they should have supported players who experienced far harsher treatment much sooner. Your point is good, and just shows how little and how hypocritical they can be at times when it’s their own. they’re great pundits the two of them, but this maguire saga is embarrassing imo and way over saturated.
the only problem with maguire is that he doesn’t identify he’s done bad, in interviews he’s lashed out and said the manager still picks me and i’m starting ahead of whoever like he needs to accept he’s not been good to get out of the situation, in the coming months surely he will when he’s not getting many games and he could come back to be great who knows
He's made a lot of mistakes. But so has almost every one of his teammates. And y'all blame all of it on him.
Hahaha mate. You want him to talk about how crap he is every interview? Let’s use that brain next time you comment okay?
@@smallarmskepa4390 No? But you can still acknowledge mistakes you know
It's probably his way of coping with it all, when you are constantly abused everywhere you look, if you don't know how to handle that then you can lash out. He is probably sick of it especially when it is not just him that is the problem but he is the only one getting sounded out and abused.. I have given up reading comments almost everywhere when it comes to United posts, videos etc as it is almost a garauntee that within 3 comments there will be someone hurling abuse at him even when he isn't playing. I mean I kept seeing peoplesaying how the City loss was all down tom him,i've seen people saying they wish he killed himself, hoping he rots in hell and many other things. It's getting ridiculous.
Am I fan of his? No, I don't think we should have signed him and been saying that from the moment we were rumoured to be getting him, but his form is not all down to him. Has he made mistakes, yes many but when you are not the quickest defender and your midfield and other defenders don't help you out then you are going to have problems. Both for England and United he hasn't exactly been helped by those around him. Would I play him if I was a manager? No, what I would do is advise him to spend a few months working with a sports psychologist and get his head right, one that will help him learn to cope with the abuse and channel it into performances becausenow the pressure on him to perform when he plays is so high, he knows if he messes up he's goingto get death threats, told to suicide, etc. No player can perform through that when their head isn't right and can't block out the hate.
It’s called accountability and white peoples have very little of it
Of course bullying and social media threaths are not okay in any shape of form. The thing is that with Maguire, the reason there has been so much criticism is that he has played for both United and England when he shouldn't have played simply because his performances were not good enough. This has been going on for a couple of years now and i think especially United fans know what i'm talking about. For example this international break, Tomori did not start a single game for England and clearly had a better last season and is CURRENTLY a better player than Maguire. Neville & Carragher have to understand that fans get frustrated when Maguire is playing and better players on form are sitting on the bench.
But to be fair that's all Southgates fault
@@jasonmillsom2981 it is, but that’s yet another sign of poor management, he’s making Maguires situation worse by playing him constantly whilst he’s massively low in confidence and on terrible form.
Hasn't Maguire been scoring in England games though?
That's the argument being made that his England form has been well above his United form.
And it's always been the way that English players in the EPL have preference, that shouldn't be pushed on Maguire, that's on Southgate and the FA
In terms of his overall performances for England AND United, Maguire hasn't been the same player since the incident in Greece. I know he's had the Euros, but he's been all over the place for United for well over a season now.
I have often likened United to England, both in terms of the boring football, but also the managers (at least under Ole and Rangnick with United), and their habit of picking players on their names rather than their form. When players are in poor form and you continue to start them, they end up believing themselves to be indispensable.
No player has the right to always start. Unfortunately, Southgate has the age-old England manager's annoying habit of keeping the same crappy individuals in the squad, e.g. Sterling, Maguire, Shaw, Mount, etc etc. Even Kane is only contributing by scoring penalties.
The main problem is that England have a freaking Serie A winner sitting on the bench and he is not even making the 23 man squad?! What is Fikayo Tomori supposed to do, more than he has done already?!?! It's a total disregard to players who are deserving of being given a proper chance. Getting snubbed because Gareth Southgate doesn't favor players from foreign leagues. Anybody who has watched a little bit of Serie A football knows that Tomori is among the top 10 center backs in the world right now ✨
Wouldn't surprise me if Tomori chose to represent Canada when Maguire is still being picked above him even now...

I think people struggle to feel for Maguire because he happily throws others under the bus, he did it last week after the Italy game blaming the forwards, has done it multiple times for United. Liking IG posts that slander the likes of Ronaldo etc. I totally agree with the mental health side of players, especially with that toxic platform by the name of Twitter. I don't care how much money they earn, they're humans just like the rest of us and its bound to effect them. But where is sort of sympathy for players like Pogba etc? Hypocrisy is always ripe my friend
But Pogba was poor because of his attitude and lack of ability to play in a position that was catered for him. Not because he was out of form. Criticism is different to abuse.
@@lotuseater7247 His position wasn't exactly catered for him. They barely ever had a good DM behind him to do the dirty work like he did when he performed well with France. His best season he had Herrera and Matic behind him, but Matic's legs were gone the next year and they never replaced him. Plus, Pogba has spoken about mental health problems, which by the way can present themselves differently for everyone. You can say 'attitude problems' as if he's some intentional arsehole when in reality he may have just been suffering at the time and that's how he has responded to it.
Agreed Pogba deserved criticism but some of it went a bit too far in the media, certainly if we're using Neville's definition in this video of going too far. Pogba never had this retrospective 'yeah aw poor lad it's harsh for him' stuff in the media like Maguire is getting. English bias, plain and simple.

Really good and honest talk
Awesome debrief really opened up eyes. Love it 🥰
A good insight, thanks Gary and Jamie.
It's pathetic how suddenly the English media does a 180 to protect Maguire immediately before the World Cup. Pogba was criticised just as much for performances no where near as bad as Maguire's, and no one batted an eyelid. In fact, Sky pundits actively took part in the criticism.
Maguire is being piled on because his performances over the last 1.5 years have been straight up horrible ,end of story. He repeatedly makes mistakes that literally decide matches on its own, yet he is undeservedly given chances and selections over players who deserve it far more. The only justification people come up with for Maguire's continued appearances in either United or England shirts is a finals appearance in the Euros, yet Pogba was a Serie A and World Cup winner and no one gave a crap.
The worst part is the captaincy has gotten to Maguire's head and rather than showing some humility about his terrible performances, he mouths off on interviews about how good he is and why he deserves to be in team selections. If he showed even the slightest amount of humility then he wouldn't be getting flamed anywhere near as much.
As Neville pointed out near the end, Maguire is hardly the first player to be criticised like this. The difference is the other players were actually good, and they won fans over again with repeatedly good performances on the pitch. They didn't talk about how good they were and why they deserved to play, they showed it. Maguire on the other hand continues to show why he shouldn't play and can only put words to why he should. The guy has an inferiority complex and is obsessed with trying to live up to the United shirt and the captaincy when it is clearly above him and he should let go.
This narrative now that Maguire's criticism is unjustified and should be stopped is ridiculous. His performances justify his criticisms more than anyone. In the top level of football, you're competing against the top 0.00001% and you are supposed to be judge solely based on your performance. Maguire's performance has been absolute crap for a long time and he simply does not deserve to be playing over many other players. If Maguire can't handle the pressure or the criticism, that's the limit to his ability and he should come to terms with it, rather than living in delusion.
100% and I thank you for this comment
@@crabguy34 terrible mentality? I think it takes a big mentality to score in a world cup final. Pogba brings a lot of baggage with him and constant injuries in the last 3 years, but i don't think you can question the mentality of a player who actually turns up in big games.

And Southgate still persisting with an out of form player and protecting him unsuccessfully with 5 other defenders. Should Maguire be abused? Of course not, but there have and there will be players who will be abused sadly, and the media and Southgate are not handling it properly.

Most of the abuse Maguire is getting is from United fans. Well, he's now being trolled by basically the entire footballing world. Must be extremely tough to deal with.
It is also tougher for Maguire, because it's happened during this internet age. They didn't have the Twitter abuse to deal with. It was mostly at games, and it ended when they went home.
I don't know, Pogba got more abuse from United fans nobody came to his defense. Maguire is getting more abuse overall though. Fans of every club are trolling him
@@b6pablo Pogba did get a lot of abuse, but I don't think it reached this point where it has with Maguire. People blame absolutely everything on him. Pogba still had fans in the fanbase. I don't think Maguire has many at all.
@@b6pablo decent point but Pogba still had support from France where he was still respected. As a lot of people have said, it's gotten so bad that for his own personal sake and his career he needs to be dropped just to get him out of the limelight.
Really need to stop using the word ‘abuse’ when referring to someone having the mickey taken out of them quite reasonably. There are people out there and even footballers who do receive real, actual abuse and it’s extremely ignorant to insinuate that Maguire is currently going through something similar to those individuals. People aren’t stupid, we make up our own minds from what we see and hear. Maguire comes across as an egotistical scumbag who holds absolutely 0 accountability for his actions or lack of. The brainwashing will not work. We know what he is and the only thing that will change our opinions is if he changes himself and his attitude. No more unwarranted sympathy it really doesn’t serve a positive purpose.
@@NathanMUFCfan He literally got told to f*ck off by his own fans while getting abused and singled out at the end of 2018/19 season, he also got booed in his last game for United despite playing decent at a deep position. Maguire got applauded by the united fans last season and protected by the english media. The reason Pogba still have fans is because he is an established footballer who at only age 23 was nominated 2015 UEFA Team of the Year and the 2015 FIFA FIFPro, won the Golden boy award at age 20, helped Juventus reach the CL final, won the Europa League and was nominated as the player of the season, nominated into the Premier League Team of the Season 2018/19 and won the World Cup the most prestigious trophy in world football for France compared to Maguire who hasn't done anything significant yet.

Carragher speaks like he was a world class centre back, he's average at best in my opinion. Stevie G carried LFC for years and there were many better England centre backs than yourself.
And thats why it's your opinion...he played professional for over 700 games at the highest level for a top club. You don't achieve that being average. Was he the most talented? No. But he read the game extremely well and was good enough in other areas to be a very very good centre back at his best.

@@ashhy2576 it's your opinion that he was a "very very good centre back at his best" im sure most with disagree but thats the beauty of Football. I'm not comparing the two because obviously you can't but if he is able to criticise one of the greats then Carragher is in the firing line.
@@sj2672 err what...its not an opinion carraghers career. If you can't give a professional footballer his due crediances that's on you and perhaps hatefulness. Ronaldo isn't considered a goat for his six pack is he? His numbers speak for themselves. There's a thing called stats which is the reality and operates outside of "opinion ". No average player plays soo long for a top club and in an integral position . If carragher was "average" he would have been sold by pool and playing for Wigan. How's maguire getting on? Do fans accept average at the highest level which then puts the manager and club under pressure to replace? Carragher was a very good centre back. That was excepted by most ex players and the most respected managers and neutral football fans.
Was he one of the greats like Terry ferdinand and even virg? No but how often do special players in their positions come along? Do we get one of those every year in every top team? Do we get ronaldos and messis every year? Maybe you're concluding average when comparing with anomalies of the game.
Just because he offended what appears your idol does not detract from his great career. I don't agree with him on ronaldo myself or what he had to say but that's his punditry and remember these "pundits" are there to stir the pot to spike ratings hence why their get paid enormous salaries.

But with pogba the criticism wasn't just about the attitude - they kept bringing up his price tag and saying he wasn't good enough etc. Maguire hasn't been criticised the same way even though I would say his performances have been worse than pogba.
The only sky pundit who is consistent in their criticism is roy keane.
This is a terrific insight to the part of football we don’t see. The lads get a lot of slack for being bias etc but they terrific pundits
No he’s right. England doesn’t have any other centre back. Except Seria A winner and AC Milan regular, Tomori. Or Premier league winner John Stones.
If maguire doesn’t want the criticism, then he can easily step aside and let someone else have a go. There’s millions of people who would kill to be in his position. No sympathy whatsoever
I don’t rate maguire but the jokes are way too far.
Gary did a great job explaining magurie isn’t alone and should talk to those that felt the same (united England players who messed up)
Defend Maguire at all costs.
00:09:20 very well said, and applies to everyone. don't give up
these two are the best football commentators; very insightful.
I remember when carragher quit playing for England after not getting picked ahead of ledley King.
What would his advice be to all the aspiring English centre backs who miss out to maguire, the team captain dropped from the starting line up the moment that his manager had an alternative?
bullying 😂. Nice one English media . It wasn't bullying when The same English media was coming for Ozil's work rate despite posting astronomical assist numbers with Giroud and Walcott as his strikers . Since we're on the topic of being soft , Ten hagg benching Ronaldo after he carried United last season and was by far their best player is bullying . Mate De gea's treatment from united fans is worse and he's actually done something for the club.
The thing is about ronaldo, for ronaldo to be goal scoring players have to sacrifice elements of their game in order to make ronaldo goal scoring ronaldo. Think about it, Bruno Fernandez is not the same player since he joined same with Rashford. Look at what happened to dybala when he joined juventus, look at benzema for Real Madrid. Yeh ronaldo might of scored loads of goals for United but it had a detrimental effect on how the squad as a whole performed.
Both of them have given out very harsh criticisms to players like Pogba. Where was the sympathy then? I’m pretty sure it’s just because Maguire is English that they feel sorry for him.
Im relieved to see Gary Neville coming to sense about Maguire
I love all this type of content. We dint see players as normal. They’re people just like fans.
Carragher seen a therapist for years back in 2002 to 2004 thanks to Henry & still to this day has the odd PTSD flashbacks of some terrifying TT moments

Great one lads
conor coady & Fikayo Tomori are englands best choice CB for sure
Stones over Coady for sure bro
Coady is solid though
Coady is championship level don’t be dumb
Dier has to be in there and maybe white or Chris smalling
Let’s be honest everyone one of them is better than maguire! I definitely forgot about stones that my bad but 100% stones an tomori
Laughable your putting coady and tomori over ben white

I’m surprised that both Carra and Neville think Southgate will drop Maguire for the World Cup. Gareth will definitely have him in the starting lineup.
what gary said at the end made me think of xhaka, its no where near over for Maguire, he's just having a bad patch
honestly i think this video would actually be real helpful and full of sound advice for harry to watch. hopefully he did see it. always important for these athletes to talk about mental health !
9:30 problem for maguire is it's not 6 months of poor form, it's been just over 3 years of shocking form
In the last 3yrs Maguire has captained Utd to 3rd then 2nd in the PL. Utd would shocking form like that again
Okay, this narrative has to stop. Maguire has been playing awful within the last 12 months. When footballers play bad, they get criticised. Just because he’s an England player and the Manchester Utd captain, it Dosent mean he should get a pass. Footballers at this level get paid millions and part of the reason they get this money is due to the pressure that comes with it, I’m not saying that the abuse that Maguire gets is called for, but at the end of the day it is sadly part of the Job.
A lot of the criticism is towards Southgate’s decision to pick him. Who cares if the manager trusts him, if you aren’t playing week in week out, you can’t start for an international game, let alone get a call up.
Southgate decided to play Maguire over Coady, Tomori and White, which is ludicrous. These players are having better seasons and playing regularly compared to Maguire.
The media needs to stop the narrative asap.
Exactly. But it will never happen. English media will go any lengths to protect him. Had this been with a foreign CB, these guys would have jumped on him or the manager and ridiculed him for getting picked as he is not getting picked at his club.
Love the chat and all but where was this same. Energy for Pogba and martial who used to play for United ?😊
he should play stones and tomori. but gareth southgate wont pick Tomori, he doesnt see footballers outside of the UK

I appreciate that these guys are highlighting the abuse and mental health toll that constant battering takes on a player - that is understandable and commendable. What I am not happy about is the constant backing of a poor player who constantly gets backed despite being subpar. Maguire at 29 has not achieved anything worthy of praise. We keep hearing “he was in the Euros team of tournament, euro final, WC semi’s etc. that’s was 4 and 2 years ago. His firm has been terrible at club level during that time and there are better players than him. Sometimes you just have to call a spade a spade - Maguire is just not good enough and what makes it worse is his arrogance in interviews never taking accountability and pushing blame on others
Great insight into elite level sports
How did Ben White not get a call-up over Harry Maguire? As an arsenal fan though im not complaining lol. More time to rest
That’s irrelevant to the conversation!!
That’s irrelevant to the conversation!!
Oh sorry thought the video was about Maguire, my mistake
He doesn't have the kind of sexual relationship Maguire has with Southgate.
Brilliant!
I wish foreign players would also get this protection..
Foreign players are useless every season.
The majority of the criticism on Maguire that I've seen is based on his on pitch form and play. Of course some nutters go too far and they are out of order but then people try to retrospectively paint any criticism as over the line. His current form doesn't warrant an England call up - that's all. If he gets back in the team and puts in good performances then people will happily accept that.
All it takes is one bad egg. And I would suggest that a lot of people think they’re making pure football comments when in reality they’re indirectly questioning his character or family. And that’s assuming the football criticisms are even valid, which some of them probably aren’t
I agree pal. On maguire he doesn't do himself any favours. Blaming everybody else not facing up to his mistakes or doing interviews when he is the captain. If he spoke the truth once in a while more be more endearing to him. Also do your talking on the pitching not leaking stories this past internationals through a third party.
harry feels much better now.. tnx
Neville is asked directly "would you pick him"?
He responds by saying that with his current form etc it's difficult for SOUTHGATE to pick him. Excellent diplomatic answer.
His time with the Labour party having its effects on him already...
They’re talking utter nonsense, Maguire doesn’t warrant an England call up. Forget what he’s done it’s ALWAYS about what you’re doing now. Tomori, Ben white, Stones, Guehi should be mandatory call ups. The rest is optional
The England team isn’t randomly selected on who’s got the better match rating on WhoScored. The reason they’ve had such good runs in the last couple tournaments is because they have a solid core of players that know each other inside out. Nothing to be gained by chopping and changing every month.
I think Neville hit the right word. I think ManU and the England national team need to make decisions to protect him. Just admit that it hasn't gone the way they expected him to perform. Relieve him of his duties as captain and player for a big club/national team and slowly phase him out and move on. It's getting uncomfortable and unnecessary to crap on him on and on and on. It's just toxic. BTW for both teams, the problems are due to the collective and top-down as well. It's not ALL on Maguire even though he does deserve due blame. Just stop prolonging it. This only happens when there are no grown ups in the room to handle the situation. ManU handle it! England national team, handle it! and MOVE ON!
Gareth needs to get us through the Group with the structure he got us to the final with but then change to our full on attack like we were untill we scored against Italy.

Carra is right too.... sometimes you have to accept that you can't fix or cure something and look to manage it instead. Best realisation I've ever had and changed my life.
I feel bad for Harry Maguire but there is a reason it has reached this point. Obviously it's not his fault that he wasn't at his best and managers kept choosing him and he was EXTREMELY protected by the media being English. BUT it's also about his attitude during this whole time. As a captain, there has been no leadership at all, no frustration at losses, no frustration with teammates to do better, no passion whatsoever. Also, he messes up at such crucial moments and people have only recently realized this, but as a United fan watching, you could always see the mistakes and bad passes he makes and him getting no blame. The media kept going on about Pogba, Fred etc. but there was a huge problem at the back. On top of that, his overall attitude is so arrogant. The Greece incident, pointing fingers at teammates, then coming out at press conferences making arrogant comments like 'If I was bad I wouldn't play' etc. The current situation is all a build up of all these events over the last 2-3 years and it's not hard to see why so many fans have lashed out like this. That being said, no one deserves this treatment and I hope he can turn things around at United.
A lot of people criticising (be that towards football players or otherwise) wouldn't even attempt the things their target is failing at. It's very easy to criticise when you yourself have nothing to lose.
I think this is important to hear the side from footballers who have been through what maguire is going through. I've been critical of maguire but more because as the captain of United he deflects the blame on his other players and managers and doesn't take the blame himself. Fernandes after our loss to City as our captain said first I take the blame and then the rest of the players.

no England CB play regularly as CB in top six team, so 3 CB is the only option for England in WC
they can play White, Maguire, Stone, Walker, Dier, Gomez as 3 CB bc all of them used to play in 3 CB formation
This topic is all good and well. Would be great if this would've happened when other players went through worse. There's playing going through worse right now.
This was great
The pundits/media that were involved in the game that are constantly bullying certain players wouldn’t of survived this social media and digital world of opinions. No chance. Weve all seen players over the years get abuse from the stands and take it on the chin but not being able to run or hide even on social media is something footballers have ever had to deal with. That’s why we need to give huge props to city because nothing at all is phasing them in this mental era of football and humanity
4:15 says a lot about early-2000s internationals in this country that I forgot England even played in those years😂
Sterling got this criticism as well. Harry needs to bounce back strong
Rashford has never come out of it. He's absolutely dire.
neither of these 2 were world beaters and if they weren't playing for the red top teams would have got half the international caps they got. also these 2 would never have coped in today game, would have loved to see them up against the current City team.
Nobody should wish adversity like this on anyone. I’m not a United fan or even an England fan, but I want Harry Maguire to be at his best. I want my in-form team to beat the other in-form team with all the players at their best. When Maguire is confident and in a system that harnesses his strengths, he’s a top class centre back. Put a prime Maldini on the halfway line and ask him to play the way teams do these days and he’d struggle to. Not saying Maguire is that level but it’s sad to see the mental toll of such an ill-fit. It’s not his fault that United paid £80m, and that’s the reason he can’t get a move somewhere that’s better for him. Hope all goes well for him soon.
Yawn. He gets paid millions and deserves no sympathy when criticised for poor performances
Haven't seen Harry do well in utd shirt always looks in trouble. He should force move out and leave the club
you are feeling sorry for him? what a weak mind you have. He is criticized for his performances, nothing else. If he plays better and gets faster then he won't be.
He gets paid millions of pound is captain of one of the biggest clubs in the world and he has put in shocking performance after shocking performance for the past 18 months and was constantly still picked for each game he is at fault for around 70% of the goals his team have conceded he deserves every bit of criticism he is getting
And as for his somewhat decent performances for England the majority of the time England we’re playing lesser opponents and wasn’t tested and also he plays in a back 5 with 2 defensive midfielders sitting in front of him he is protected so much in that system nothing to do with how good a player he might be
Also to say Maldini couldn’t of played with a high line is laughable one of the best defenders to ever read the game would know when to drop back and when to make the press he would be just fine
Where with Maguire he is the most reactive defender I’ve ever seen he never reads the game or reads the player he never anticipates what a opponent is going to do he only ever reacts to what the have done and that’s one of the main reasons he looks so wild and clumsy you cannot play against world class players and be trying to react to what they are doing all the time you have to read the game know when to stand or go to the ground or when to drop back or when to press and Harry hasn’t a clue
