How Good Was Gary Neville, Really?

  • Between 1992 and 2011, Manchester United won every competition available to them, at least once. In many cases they won these competitions several times over.
To maintain that kind of dominance for such a long, sustained period of time, a team needs a strong, reliable core group of personalities.
In the case of Manchester United, there are three personalities who were there throughout this entire period of time, and who are probably credited the most for the clubs insane success. Those three are Sir Alex Ferguson, Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes.
However, there is a fourth that is often not talked about in the same light as those listed above. That man is Gary Neville.
Although, nowadays he often gets bullied by Jaime Carragher on live television, Gary Neville was one of the most consistent and reliable defenders around during the first few decades of the Premier League.
But it's been some time since he last took to the pitch, and some people may be more familiar with his punditry than his footballing ability.
So, with that being said, how good was Gary Neville, really?

He was incredibly consistent. People talk about "modern day" fullbacks that need to attack, bomb up and down the flank -- Gary Neville did that throughout his entire career. His crossing was decent and his throw-ins were very underrated. Very committed, gave 100% every game for both club and country. It's unfortunate we don't have as many individual highlight videos of the likes of Giggs, Scholes, Neville, etc. like many current players do. Gary was in a bracket of his own. Very humble of his abilities, but deserves to be recognized more for those that didn't see him play.

Neville started out as a CM,before playing RB,and could also play CB (marking Duncan Ferguson out of a game!)
In a CL match...v Juventus,Neville chipped BUFFON,from outside the box, unfortunately clipping the bar.
He was a world class RB,beyond question, its just that the attributes that made a wc RB in those days, are extremely difficult for us amateurs to see,or appreciate and worse,a lot of us seem to sneer at those attitudes.
    Determination,courage,discipline,tactical awareness,defensive distances,man marking,leadership.
He was a great tackler and header of the ball, with an underrated cross and was never fazed by any opponent, venue or occasion.
But I think his greatest quality, was selflessness, not just in his overlap runs for Becks and CR7,but in leading the English strike against the Rio ban,in arguing his teammates corner, even against Fergie, and ultimately, retiring when he knew he was done, not stealing 2 or 3 more years from Rafael, and earning money he felt he wasn't earning.
    Severely underrated player.

Not the quickest, tallest, strongest, most skilful, or most creative full-back by any means, but he was very consistent defensively and intelligent tactically and played with a lot of tenacity with how he tackled and worked hard for the team, and he was also a good leader, which made him an important figure at Man U. And although he wasn't a modern offensive-minded right-back, and mainly provided balance to the team and defensive solidity, and he could make overlapping runs and cross well, too. Definitely one of England's, the Premier League's, and Man U's greatest right-backs; there were still quite a few players above him in his position among those of his generation, however, so definitely not an all-time great, but a good player who was probably under-appreciated. Probably today he would be used as a right-sided centre-back in a back 3 as I don't think his defensive qualities would be appreciated at right-back, considering what managers often look for in attacking full-backs or wing-backs right now; he was quite versatile too and could play on the left or in the centre if need be.

G Neville had the best type of career, safe job with a safe position, always played and played well, won trophies, medals, played with and against great players, holds his own, played for England and now is a great tv presenter! Proper bloke , doesn’t matter to much about scoring goals, other do that I’ll shore up the defence! Brilliant! One of my childhood hero’s along with the others, they were excellent time to be a united fan!

For me he was the best RB in the premier League for 10 years easy. They were other good RBs in the league during this time Carr, Lauren etc but Neville was the best. As some1 once described Irwin a 7/10 player every week well thats Neville as well. His delivery was pretty good and his understanding with Beckham was fantastic. Beckham lacked in pace only downside of his game so Neville made that run for him so many time.
Great video mate, loved it. Thanks for sharing

I remember some of Gary Neville's time at Manchester United, I started supporting Manchester United in 2006
Despite seeing only a glimpse of Neville, I can confidently say that he was a very reliable defender.
I would price him around 45M-50M Euros in today's market.

When fit, 1st choice right back for England for most of his career. Very good crosser, great sense of defensive positioning that made up for lack of pace. Vocal and a leader on the pitch. He was never world class like Cafu or Zanetti but was certainly a very good right back, and the best English right back of his generation

One of Englands greatest ever players! Got onto the england side before Scholes and becks coz he dead so good. Hard to find a better player then Gary the Neville. Him and roberto Carlos were so similar and I can’t believe Gary never got even close to a ballpark dor with the amounts of crosses and assists he did. A leader as well and when he talked the players listened coz of his rage and will to win! The boss of the class of 92! Could play anywhere and would of loved to see him as a striker but he was just to good in his position

Gary Neville wouldn’t go for any amount of money in today’s transfer market because he’d stay at Man Utd for his whole career. He loved Utd, that’s what made him a top class player. Not tenacity. Not resilience. Love.

Damn the class of 92 was something else, at the moment our current youth academy seems to be looking really great again, honestly one of the reasons I'm ten hag in, if you look at Fergie he would've been sacked before actually winning anything, these things take time, look at Arsenal with Arteta, he took them out of the banter era to being competitive again by being allowed to remove deadwood

Consistent is the worst attribute that I can associate with Gary. Could go forward and could defend, could deliver some pretty decent crosses and had a great understanding with Beckham with the overlaps. Could be beaten by some very skilled forwards, and I remember his clashes against Henry and Pires where sometimes he looked lost and would get berated by Keano. But a cornerstone in the Manchester United dominance for atleast 12 years

    • @FootballIconic
      @FootballIconic  Před 3 lety +1

Fair enough. He did run into problems with Overmars on a few occasions too, I remember. To be fair, Viera and co specifically targeted him in matches against Arsenal back in the day.
