You're Confused you're acting like people don't realise their partners are manipulative after years of being together. Abuse and manipulation isn't immediately obvious, it has to be built over time in order to really trap the victim. The reason why many domestic abuse victims find it hard to leave is because they're still clinging to the partner they thought they knew and the one that once loved them and made them feel good, they think the abuse is just a "glitch". A few weeks is not enough to see some manipulative people because the most dangerous ones know how to play the long game.
Having best friends also doesn't mean anything because many abusive people have good friends, they are able to hide their manipulation from people around them, that's why many people defend them and find it hard to believe that they can be abusive. Not saying that Michael is abusive but your arguments to defend him don't make sense
