A Bill Kreutzmann quote from Wikipedia:
"Jerry brought "Row Jimmy" into us one day, and it was really difficult to get a grip on it at first. It has a slow tempo, which makes it seem like it would be easy, but it calls for a slight reggae groove layered over a ballad. Rhythmically, the lengths aren't traditional. They're not just twos and fours. It's deceiving. Basically, you have to play the song in half-time with a double-time bounce on top. It's trickier than it sounds. But once I locked into it, "Row Jimmy" became one of the best songs in our repertoire."

I was always a casual Grateful Dead fan but about two years ago I started doing a deep dive into all Grateful Dead music. I stumbled upon your video of Row Jimmy and listening to your explanation of how the song had a reggae beat to it seem to pull everything together for me. Row Jimmy has always been one of my favorite songs by the Dead and now I understand why. I think Jerry’s slide guitar solos are amazing and I wish he would have done more on the slide. Thanks again!

I gotta say your emotion and enthusiasm for Jerry and the Dead bring tears to my eyes. Most of my life people have given me flack for loving their music. The description of your inability to know where Jerry is going to go really helps gel why I love this music so much. The depths of sound, rhythm and harmony between the band is so sweet when they are on. Add some incredible Robert Hunter lyrics and presto. I like how you are going to break down the entire Cornell show. Another epic show to break down would be from 7-19-89 on you tube known as “down hill from here” The sound quality, the mix and the song selection are top notch. Thanks again for your channel and can’t wait to hear more Cornell

You're absolutely right, I think he said "It's not about keeping time, it's about keeping feel". I think the best examples of Bill "keeping feel" are the deep jam segments of any 72-74 Dark Star/The other one/Playing in the band, where every notion of keeping a time signature is abandoned. It always amazes me how every band member had such a unique approach to their instrument!

FANTASTIC! Cornell 77 is way up the list, for sure! I'm looking very much forward to this series! The reason the sound is so good is because this is a "Betty Board" recording coming straight from the board at the show, as mixed by Betty Cantor-Jackson. I'm pretty sure The Dead have finally gotten control of all of the known Betty Boards. Heads, correct me if I'm wrong on that point. So much of what you hear out there is taper stuff, and while still great, and all we have of some shows, Betty Boards are the best I've ever heard! Betty put Bobby and Phil high in the mix, and it makes for fine stuff! I've been on the bus since 69, but the main thing is you found the bus, and there's always room! Such timeless music! I love a good, slow rolling, Row Jimmy! You're going to really enjoy Cornell 77! While not on Cornell, I think you would really have a ball with a rousing "The Eleven" live, this one from Fillmore West in 69! Talk about being out there on the ledge! This beauty is a tightwire walk from start to finish! Just a nice easy 11/8 time signature......no problem! Phil is an absolute BEAST on this version and Jerry just leaves you shaking your head....... czcams.com/video/36oYArpSkms/video.html

I was there. Beautiful sunny weekend, hiking in the gorges of Ithaca. Mother's Day 1977 concert. Drove from Chicago. All my college friends showed up from around the country (Cornell Class '73). and my brother. Didn't know any of them were going there (pre-email and cell phones). Barton Hall only held a few thousand. Amazing time capped by that Dew! And as we left, it sure was snowing. I drove west back to Chicago, so was out of the snow in a hour or so. My friends driving back to Boston drove in the snow all the way. They let a soundboard tape freely circulate which launched thousands of Deadheads. And then the original tape went missing. Found and reacquired by the band prior to the 40th anniversary of the show. Restored and released for the anniversary on the recording you now hearing.

Do we have to compare Garcia to Mayer every time there is a dead related video. They both do what they do amazingly well. Garcia was a god on guitar but Mayer is certainly up there on certain nights. They both excel at things the other doesnt. Ill take a Mayer Althea every day of the week. And Mayer has elevated the bands popularity to a new level and is gonna push the legacy on for the next 25 years.

kevin Borchers hey Kevin! I’m glad to hear you enjoy that music. But as someone who came to the GD with Garcia alive, as long as people are saying what you just said and not differentiating that Dead and Co is a completely different band than the GD and referring to Mayer and Garcia in the same breath and the same use of the word ‘god’ - my conscience demands that I speak up for Garcia and the late great band that was the GD. Dude Meyer at his best is a pale pale shadow of what Garcia was capable of while nodding out. Trust me.
