PLEASE NOTE: This is a theory about why the character, Hicks, has the heart on his armor. While I am aware of James Remar's involvement, and it's an interesting behind-the-scenes story, this is not a theory about the costuming process of the film itself.

Did you.. Seriously block my comment? :)
I find that to be intellectually dishonest.
There is nothing wrong with any fan explaining "what they like to believe and why". However, failing to cite that it is "what they like to believe" and allow it to "slip under the radar" causes its repeated discussion until it graduates to "purported fact". I, personally, find that concept frustrating. Whether discussion this or any film and or story.I would suggest a disclaimer, but, do things as you see fit :)
That being said, will there be a video theory on why Ripley's pulse rifle was slightly longer than everyone elses? Or will we, simply, default to the real life reason why?I ask this question to demonstrate that people only begin making up fanfiction about a subject in a story when said subject is "cool" to them, conflicting to continuity, unexplained or is noticed in some other "out of place" fashion.

I would think it would be more interesting to reach out to James Remar and hear what he has to say about it, rather then just covering what people may have come up with to fill the void of the story with their own fiction. I mean this isn't bad, but i'd be more curious to hear what it was at that time, before the fans got to filling in the void.
I would imagine he may answer, if only through his agent or manager.

Saw a making of Aliens video on youtube (I might be wrong here) but the actor who playes Hicks joined later on just before filming. He was filling in de role for Hicks because the original actor didn't pull through with his role (for what reason I don't know). The armor the marines are wearing is customised by the actors themselves, pretty early on before filming (they even trained in their armors). So when the Hicks we knew got to work he already got fully customised armor ready for him.

I agree with your theory. I also think that the locked heart could also symbolize his love for his wife and that he would love no one else but her. However, in Aliens, the attraction/chemistry between Ripley and Hicks was evident and there was the scene when Hicks shot the alien that was trying to enter the elevator with Ripley and him and the acid got on his armor, so Ripley helped remove the armor. I think it's kind of symbolic that Hicks is letting Ripley into life/heart or something like that 😃

    • @JonathanTuckner

If I might add that the shot of them getting into the elevator, hicks does NOT have the padlock attached to the latch. When he last presses the (door close?) button and when the alien attempts to enter the elevator, the lock reappears.

There is a video interview with Michael Biehn where he explains this clearly. There was another actor originally cast to play Hicks. The actor had got far enough into production that he was even fitted for the costume. The actors were told that they could personalize the armor however they wanted, so this actor added the heart. When Biehn accepted the role later, it was too late in production to start with new armor. Biehn even commented during the interview that he didn't understand why the previous guy added the heart as it would be an easy target during a battle. He would have chosen something different

If he lost his wife to the xenomorph, he would have likely disclosed it to Ripley at some point during the lv426 incident. Also, as a soldier he would have shared the tactical information as soon as he realized the connection. The story even says that he heard the scream during the final message. You don't forget that scream. As soon as he heard the first scream during the first encounter on lv436, he would have shared whatever intel he had to keep his fellow marines alive. Not mentioning it for emotional reasons, only make sense if there wasn't a link to the xenomorph. The Hicks we know would have put the safety of his squad above his personal pain, and would have shared his loss to Newt, Ripley, or both out of compassion as things got significantly worse, probably after the incident with the failed impregnation.

I appreciate them creating a back story for Hicks. I think it's always pretty cool to get some more lore into good movies, however it sounds more like fan fiction. Never once watching the movie did I feel like he was married previously, or knew anything beyond the rest of the marines about the Xenomorph. The heart with the lock and key, was for me, more of a sense of irony. He keeps his heart locked but keeps the key right next to it, sort of like Joker's peace sign with "Born to Kill" in FMJ. I'd think a more interesting story would be the bullet hole with "Born Again" written around it on his armor.

I'm usually not one for adding more context to the original content of a universe like Alien or Star Wars, but this story about Hicks's wife definitely adds weight to his character. It makes the chemistry between him and Ripley that much more powerful. They were two people who had lost people so very important to them (Hicks's wife and Ripley's daughter), and Hadley's Hope was their chance at redemption.

To me it is much more straightforward. It’s a piece of armor, of combat equipment. The heart is his literal heart, and Hicks is defiantly stating you won’t get through this to harm him mortally. He’s too skilled, his equipment is too good, he’s charmed by the gods of war, take your pick. It’s the equivalent of offering your chin to an opponent in the ring.

I love the detail on the marines' armor. I'd wondered about Hicks' locked heart, but at the same time, adding the xenomorphs to so many stories in the Aliens universe starts to get a little contrived after a while. I always sort of assumed the symbolism of Hicks' heart was that he was somehow more guarded, probably due to having loved and lost, but I think adding the xenomorphs to the mix cheapens the story significantly. They are better kept as a thing rarely encountered and scarcely understood, when everyone knows about them, or has some experience relating to them they just aren't as cool. That's always been a major problem of mine with the comics. Everyone knows they're a thing. Everyone's fought them or seen them, or is part of experimenting on them. At least in the comics it makes more sense, being later in the timeline when there likely are a few worlds secretly growing hives for Weyland-Yutani to study.
Also, no way Hicks would have volunteered. Corporals don't really have that privilege. They were a standard squad, likely lifted from another platoon and turned into a reduced platoon under Gorman for the mission.
Me, I've always been curious about Hick's heart, as I said before, as well as Hudson's 'Louise' and Drake's various trophies. Of course in reality, there was never any deeper meaning behind any of them outside the actors' minds. As I recall, the special features disk in the quadrilogy set mentions they doctored up their own armor, so to get the most official backstory you'd have to ask Micheal Biehn... And while you're at it, ask him why he always gets James Cameron to have a girl bite him on the hand in all their movies together... it's getting into 'Tarantino's foot fetish' territory!

Very interesting and like many others have said, I noticed how Hicks was far less skeptical. This adds a lot more depth to the character, probably explains his fondness of the Ripley character as well and probably explains why he starts off quiet and reserved but later shows his tougher, angrier side that's more befitting an NCO. And you did the video very well, with good ambience and music in the background to set the tone.

Biehn received a call from Gail Anne Hurd on a Friday night asking him if he wanted a role to play and if his passport was in order and if he could get to England by the following Monday. So he said he took that actors wardrobe, salary and billing but the one thing he said he didn't like was the bright red heart painted in the center of the chest plate by James Remar because it didn't seem like a good idea to put on body armor but he went with it. Seems more like foreshadowing on Remar's behalf for making himself a target for replacement.

Some other dangerous lifeform maybe but the aliens themselves seems like just too much of a coincidence. Same as having Ripley appear in a story set between Alien and Aliens or having her daughter fighting the aliens while she was missing. On another note I'm expecting delivery of a set of M3 armour in kit form soon and plan to customise it. From the excerpt mentioned here, it seems evident that it wasn't a Xenomorph attack at all. Bodies were not cocooned, no chestburst wounds on the corpses, no additional Xenomorph's waiting for them like there would be in a hive, no reports of acid burns (burns yes, but nothing specifically stating acidic or burn holes through floors or walls). I think it safe to say it was clearly something else. Something else that loosely, generally fit a similar description of a xenomorph (black, large, attacking, shrieking noises) but still could be something completely different. I think anyone assuming it was a xenomorph based on that description is stereotyping and I'm offended. #XenomorphLIvesMatter .

It was the actor before Hicks who had that put on his armour. Michael Biehn hated it and thought it was 'dumb.' But as it was already on film (however briefly) and to save kicking up a stink as he said he just kept it. I believe he said it's one of those things that actors just make do with.
I like the story of Hicks' wife. However I find that the fact that her mission came up against 'that Aliens'. Maybe that's my mind and disliking coincidence. I'd imagine it being another type of alien species unrelated to the Gieger one.
However as there don't seem to be Aliens out there bigger than worms that we've discovered it makes sense it is the Xenomorph.
What I do not imagine is Hicks being attracted to Ripley, and that being his motivation to go on the mission. I believe he'd keep his motives to himself. At least his wife's team despatched the Xenomorph. Why else wasn't it there? They don't swarm then move on and I imagine the Aliens attack for a specific purpose.
Who knows, but beyond the coincidence factor - which I'd have loved in my youth it's a great story.

Them killing Hicks and Newt to this day 20 years after watching alien 3 the first time still pissed me off. And I know in colonial marines he survives and the game is technically cannon but still I genuinely just wanted him Riply and Newt to escape and be a family. Most devastated I've felt watching a movie as a child was the alien 3 reveal that they died between films.

Fun fact about Frost’s armor decals
When given the armor, Rico Ross wanted to make a reference to his fiancé Heather by writing her name in a heart, however he drew the heart first and ran out of room so you can see on his armor the rough heart shape with the name Heath squashed into it

Agreed. Thats why I didn't like it as well. Many of these stories are removing the mystery behind the Alien U mythos imo. Thats why I didn't like Prometheus and Covenant; Ridley wants to explain everything. The Xenos are no longer scary or interesting and the Space Jockeys/Engineers are silly. Watching the original Alien as kid and seeing the Jockey in that weird seat my own imagination was greater than anything guessed at the time or told or shown recently in ther theaters.

The heart is a reference to Sarah Connor, when he saw a picture of her that John Connor gave him. After the war with the machines ended, Reese changed his name to Hicks and joined the USCM wanting to forget all about Sarah. That's when Ripley entered his interest but Reese/Hicks didn't make it in the end. Supposedly rumor has it he didn't die but ended up going back in time to rescue Sarah from Cyberdyne systems model 101 terminator. He was killed by a pipe bomb explosion when taking down the Terminator.

Anthologies like this are basically fanfiction written by established authors instead of bored fifteen year olds, and if you approach it from that viewpoint I don't have an issue with it. I'm tempted to buy it just to see what Larry Correia's done; his writing pedigree (Monster Hunter International) is perfect for this.
I regard the films as the only reliable canon, with one exception - anything Alan Dean Foster tells us over and above what's in the film counts. That "official novelisation" tag counts for a lot, and if he has David admitting to Oram that his Xenomorph ("protomorph") comprises tinkering with what was already there... well... who am I to complain?

I have only seen the Alien films prior to Prometheus but with Aliens, Michael Biehn is a close contender in the Chuck Norris bad as$ category.
I seemed to gather that Cpl. Hicks had a past life and love then most likely a loss; given a man’s propensity at times to lock up his heart after “that one and only love”. The interactions between he and Ripley seemed to be a protective stance much like a son looking after his aunt or his mother; but wisely, and possibly due to the age difference and certainly due to circumstances, he kept his distance and made it clear that any type of relationship was out of the question for both their sakes. “Take this [tracker] it’s not like we’re engaged or anything.”

+Alien Theory Another great video. I never knew about this at all. I think they did semi mention this in Aliens: Colonial Marines when the crew and Bishop (different) meet Hicks near the weylond military facility. I think Hicks even explains Weylond Industries experimented on him and they gave Hicks an artificial heart(?) so they can keep him alive to see how humans react to the acid and see if they can weaponize it at some point(?) I played the game and finished it once I did find it neat that they tried to expand on Hicks in the game since it was post Aliens. What you explained I thought was cool since it was pre Aliens.

As a soldier I would think that it would be more along the lines to guard his heart. Am I old unit would use to do stuff like that as well so it would make sense that even though was a tactical bag call it would still be something that would be allowed based on his experience in life. Or it could also mean to keep matters of the heart under lock and key and protect what's closest to you something to that effect as well as a memorial for his late wife although I do love this story I do think that her running into aliens was a bit of a convenience or a wonderful story plot device

+yakza5 Isolation was a step in the right direction but it was more of a survival game and more like the first Alien. An action game that feels like Aliens should be a no-brainer. It's a shame how ACM has become such a joke because the hype was so strong and it should have been AMAZING. So much went wrong story-wise and gameplay-wise. I didn't mind AVP2010 though but again it didn't live up to the hype. I'm not a huge gamer but I think AVP2000 and AVP2 for the PC are two of the best examples of creating an awesome experience with the material. I would love to see them remastered for the new generation consoles.

After watching this. It reminded me of something during the briefing on the Sulaco. When Hudson says "Is this going to be a straight up fight sir or another "Bug Hunt?"
When Gorman says "a possible Xenomorph threat maybe involved." Hudson looks at Hicks and says it's a "Bug Hunt" and then smirks like it's nothing new. It is possible Hudson knew about the Xeno's as well? Maybe heard stories? Maybe Hicks might have told him about his secret? Because every other Marine in that squad did not know what Gorman even said. Hudson and Hicks were the only ones that had calm faces when Ripley explained about the Xenomorph. Just a thought and love your channel.

Another interpretation, and using the same story, Hicks' heart may be locked down because he can't see himself loving another woman the way he loved his wife. He's closed his heart off from the possibility of love, which may have slowly being reversed due to his interactions with Ripley.
