  • Hi all Wolf Lord Rho here,
    Today we conclude Iron Warriors week, by discussing Perturabo rejecting the offer, of Grandfather Nurgle... and the surprising reveal about the Primarchs future...
    Spoiler warning the events we are discussing are from the Horus Heresy novel "Slaves to Darkness". As always I really recommend you read the novel for yourself first. As that's the best way to enjoy the lore, for yourself. Not only that but we help to support the great Games Workshop and Black Library. If you think about it, Perturabo's character encompasses all of the chaos gods traits. He's a brutal and bloodthirsty warrior, He is resistant and perseverant in the harshest of situations, He is a prideful artisan, and he is a plotter and a schemer. He may not worship the chaos gods but he is everything they want.

It's very much described as a significant power in and of itself within the Warp given that not only do beings on the scale of Greater Daemons have to battle eachother for the right to gain their services, but more significantly need to swear an oath of coming to its defense should any of the four Great Powers of Chaos attempt to seize it for themselves, including that of their own patron God. I think it's interesting to have two different manners of being an "Undivided Chaos" Daemon Primarch: one by sincerely worshiping the 4 Chaos Gods (Lorgar), one by worshiping none of them, only serving yourself and your hatred but still being their puppet against your own will (Perturabo). Maybe he didn't care about the Ruinous Powers but was still corrupted by the perspective of raw and huge power.

      Perturabo and the Night Lords (even if Curze lived I believe) were/are indifferent to the chaos gods. They were both angry with the Emperor for what they perceived as being lied to, used, and they foresaw being discarded eventually. They will use gifts only if it benefits them and does not enslave them. Think of the Oblivion virus (have no clue if its still canon or in their codexes).

      The Iron Warriors we chaos as a tool, something useful but not to be worshipped (besides the bare minimum of rituals needed to get them to play ball with you) and certainly not to be trusted. Other legions see mutation as a gift from the gods, the Iron Warriors chop off and burn their mutated limbs and replace them with cybernetics.
      When it comes to Perturabo becoming a daemon prince, I like to think he had no choice, his time amongst the traitors had already damned him, so it was either die and let his soul be the plaything of the chaos gods with him unable to act, or accept their “gift” and become a plaything, but with some small amount of agency.
      The Uriel Ventris novels give a pretty succinct example do the Iron Warrior’s mentality of brutal pragmatism. The daemonculaba, something so monstrous in its operation, was not built as an engine to give glory to the pantheon by some Word Bearer zealot, nor was it built as some bizarre apparatus of debauchery by some hedonist of the Emperor’s Children. It was built by the Iron 4th, because they needed more marines and deemed it to be the most expedient way to obtain them.

      then he would be a mutant. in his daemon form at least he can take whatever shape he wanted. also he wanted immortality just like the others, but wanted to do it better than them. the others are direct tools of the gods, each loyal to one. but Pert as undivided is more let loosethan controlled, his general actions fuel the 4 but he is never used directly for the gods would not rely on a weapon that could the next day serve their brothers. thus he has more liberty than any other daemon primarch. you can see it, magnus has acted in tzeentchs will, mortarion too, as well as angron, while fulgrim is a total mystery, he might have even fought in the warp in the great game. but meanwhile, Lorgar was left alone for 10k years to meditate and do his own thing, just as pert secluded hiself in mendregard. we see the same schema in all undivided princes, they retain the greatest independence.

    * Perturabo managed to barter with/fool all of the pantheon to ascend him, as he would still be more useful to them as shared than dead.
    * While Lorgar, which wasn't in high standing with anyone in the pantheon at the time of his ascension, was instead ascended by the warp, the Empyrean itself.

    I don't know much about the new lore, but classically Mortarions backstory makes him the better choice. The thing about Nurgle that makes him interesting his how he's a fatherly figure, and his cohort acts like an insane family more than a military. Mortarion needed a father figure, and his experience overcoming the toxic mess of his world really suits him to the nurgle motif. The real question for me was always how he orgaized the deathguard after they switched. I would have thought that the order of battle would just completely collapsed. New legions switching to Nurgle would just blend in. For some reason, I never saw Nurgle's desire to convert them as anything other than Nurgle being Nurgle... he's have taken all the legions if he could, and it would have been more of an adoption than a seduction. Mortarion isn't necessarily the only Primarch that could have fit in, but for the sake of the stories (which were written specifically for each of them afterall) his makes more sense than anyone.

All four of the chaos gods would have probably wanted to get as many primarchs as they could, but because of the very nature of each primarch some would have naturally been drawn to a particular god and not been possible to sway from that god by the others. However, any primarch that hadn't joined any god could still yet be swayed in any one direction should that god find a way to do so, thus being highly sought after by all four and probably even fought over. • @bulwyf2572
      @bulwyf2572 Před 4 lety +7

      He literally shot the living crap out of Angron and hit him to pieces with his hammer. Perty absolutely demolished Angron and could have killed him (as much as you can kill a demon, Angron would just go back to the warp) but brought him back as Horus had ordered. It is easily one of the best scenes Perty gets in the HH series.

    • @Kristian.B.Kristiansen
      @Kristian.B.Kristiansen Před 4 lety +2

      It is a great fight, precisely because Perturabo is outclassed as a melee combatant. He uses tactics, firepower and pure will to not so much defeat Angron but withstand Angron, who is running low on Warp juice. Angron is still a beast, and lands a blow so good, it would have killed most other Primarchs, before Perturabo's delaying strategy secures him the win. It took pure Iron to bring Angron around and get him to Horus.

      @Cian Abroad True, like Russ did in the "Night of the Wolves" Perturabo outmanoeuvred The World Eater and unlike Russ was able to make Angron see sense long enough to work together.

    Yea, I changed my mind... I would still like to see what a demon Perturabo would look like... but based on his intelligence and how awesome he is... I hope they retcon his daemonhood... Besides he's is about as nuts a Kurze, but more controlled and calculating... thats enough for me...

    As i said in other comments, pert actively sought daemonhood,however he sought it in a different kind. he saw what became of his brothers who had all become pawns of their respective gods. what i see as possible is that he read the book of Lorgar in his search for information. remember Lorgar gave each traitor brother an individualized copy of his book, which we know holds information about chaos, as well as encantations, spells and rituals as seen within the book Vengeful spirit where Horus uses his book to bind a daemon. Thus Perturabo must have deduced that by pledging himself to all 4, like Lorgar, he can attain immortality and power just like his brothers and at the same time retain a higher degree of independence. he is probably aware that the gods will someday give him commands but due to their main focus being on the great game, they dont usually directly command undivided daemon princes, because the very next day they might serve another brother. it is more that their general actions fuel all 4 of them and can be used effectively against other foes aside from their brothers. i mean just look at it. all divided daemon princes or primarchs have acted in the name of their gods in several occasions, Mortarion in the scourge stars conquering for nurgle or Magnus in the stygius sector. meanwhile Pert has been left alone to do whatever he pleases for 10k years, same with Lorgar. in fact Most undivided princes in lore act more upon their own ambitions than in the name of the gods (because inevitabely their goals will benefit the gods in one way or another).

    It's good that they have followed up this issue... Perturabo WAS sapped on Fulgrim's ascension.
    I'm not sure if he was dying. Nurgle's emotion du jour is despair. He could have just been trying to play on a fear of Perturabo. Potentially, he was dying but not figuratively. Spiritually. The hole in his soul was sapping his sanity.

      @Leagle Eagle Dorn At said time was 6 years deep Into an increasingly one sided defensive war against all of the traitor Legions.
      Dorn was probably beyond exhausted in spirit, Mental capacity and likely sleep deprived (which for a primarch would probably take a few years of getting 1-2 hours sleep every week.)
      Also let us not forget that Rogal Dorns genes spawned the op fuck you Sigismund!!!
      I'd like to think that Dorns fighting prowess under optimal conditions would be able to handle pre daemon perto.
