  • BMW E30 Restoration Episode 7 - Wheel Well Rust Repair - Part 2/2
The wheel well/frame rail has finally done. In the second part you'll see how it turned out. Hope you enjoy!
    Final result:
This repair did not go to plan for me. There were many mistakes made through the process. I managed to overcome some mistakes, but not all of them. Also, my old Esab 1-phase welder and my welding skills seems to be working only occasionally. But we'll get the job done eventually. The final result is a rust free but somewhat OEM- looking wheel well/frame rail. Because this is a restoration project my goal is to make the body of the car as OEM as I can.
Fortunately this is a project car which has no deadline. So I may return to this part later if I am not happy with the outcome of this repair. But even if I don't redo this part is not that visible anyway once all of the parts are re-installed in their places. As you can see in the video that the washer fluid tank covers most of this part so we should be good! In addition I will smoothen out all of the welds with some bondo once all of the welds are done in the engine bay.
    Future:
Left hand side of the engine bay has the same rust spots to be done. Fortunately it's not looking as bad as the right hand side used to look before the repairs. I will not go as deep on the repairs of the left side when I start fixing it. It is just way too much work for me if I continue working on it like this.
Thanks for all the comments and subscribes so far! It has been a fun journey overall :)

NICE!!! Our e30 project car has about the same or worse level of rust. 😢 Look forward to seeing more of your work 😁

I admire your addiction to this project. There is a lot of work ahead. For me an E30 does not feel like a classic car because I know it as brand new car. My uncle worked at BMW and he had a new car every 6 month (they could buy them with 25% discount and sell them after 6 month with profit). Therefore I was able to try a few models (320i, 325i, 325e and an M3 - unfortunately only as passenger because I was not yet 18.
I saw you using motip primer. I am not a fan of this stuff. First it is not a weld through primer (and thus has a negative effect on welds, it can cause crappy welds) and second it doesn't provide good corrosion protection. It can easily washed off with Acetone - that tells you something.
Also I'd remove the paint on a wider area - burning paint is not healthy and bad for the welds

Hey! Thanks for the comment! I use weld through for places still to be welded after painting. For other surfaces I use motip. Its not the best, but the paint covers easily.
"Remove the paint on a wider area" - Noticed this while filming the upcoming episode, haha!

Great work so far, but you should adjust your welder settings. Those welds look a bit too thick. Maybe it needs more amp or less wire? And i'd recommend to clean all those areas before you weld. That doesn't mean just to remove the paint but rather use some brake fluid cleaner before you start welding. Some of the welds look like there's dirt inside.

NEVER use brake cleaner to clean up an area right before welding!

@@Juntasification It makes deadly phosgene gas when you weld on it. The smallest amount is lethal. Yes, you can weld on non-chlorinated brake cleaner, but generally speaking, telling someone to weld over brake cleaner is BAD advice.

0.75 mm (0.028") or 1.00 mm (0.040") depending on the thickness of the original thickness.
