- We went inshore saltwater fishing in Outer Banks, North Carolina. We got an early start and the weather was perfect. Fishing was very slow for the first few hours. Our initial plan was to fish for speckled trout but after a few hours we decided to switch gears because the trout weren't biting. We decided to target bluefish instead. We looked for bird activity and when we found the birds, we found the fish. There were huge schools of bluefish feeding on minnows and the birds were joining in on the feast. We cast our jigs into the feeding frenzy and caught some really nice bluefish. They fought hard and turned our fishing day around. We continued chasing birds and catching bluefish for a few hours until we ran out of time.

Definitely a different style of fishing. Bet that was fun but after a little while of that I would have targeted something else to go with them. Got to have a little variety to go with all that food. Lol

Last time I was at the sea my fish finder was signaling like crazy and we had 4 lines in the water and started reeling them in... We only hooked scallops which you cannot take out of the water in MA so we had to leave the hooks and lures in them and cut the lines. It would have made more sense if we could pull our lines out and remove the hooks. At least that way they'd have a chance of surviving (can't eat easily with a hook lodged in your muscle down to the shell...)!

Good video but sounds like your reel needs to have the drag tightened a bit.

Bluefishing is the best.
I'm from Long Island and grew up with these 'ocean piranhas'. Super fast, aggressive, and strong with a major set of teeth.
We never kept them for eating, though. Are they tasty?
Where exactly where in the Outer Banks is this?
What do these fish taste like? Flaky or meaty?
Found this online…. “The meat is rich and fatty with a fine, soft texture and long flake. The flavor is mild on the day of the catch yet gains in strength a day or two later.” I haven’t ate any of them yet so I can’t give my opinion. But from what I remember they’re pretty “fishy” tasting.

I have caught boatloads of blues in Hatteras over the past 30 years. Very good eating fish.
They are nice to eat up to about 4 pounds. They get 'oily' tasting beyond that size. Heads make great crab bait.
