One reason I think John Powell is he best composer in the industry is how seriously he takes animation.
Most composers just make some random orchestral underscore, but Powell (like Hans Zimmer, his mentor) actually writes music. Awesome music to be exact.

I don't remember much about this movie aside from the fact that I didn't like it much when I first saw it. But this clip alone makes me want to revisit it. Aside from the incredible music, the gag with Horton using his trunk like a steam engine is great - it makes for a funny visual gag and reinforces just how much strength and effort he's putting into chasing the vulture. Some real talent went into this film, and I want to go back and try to appreciate it properly.

I knew that music gave me a similar vibe to HTTYD! Of course it was John Powell!

Scenes like this are why Horton Hears a Who is long and away the best Dr. Seuss movie. On top of getting every character right, on top of staying true to the story while still making it feature length, on top of the animation looking incredibly faithful to the signature Seuss style, the music almost tells the story for us. John Powell has a unique talent of musical storytelling, and this scene epitomizes that.

Not only was this a great sequence to watch as a kid, it’s just amazing in general. You wouldn’t think an animated Dr Seuss movie would be this cinematic but it was. You can feel Horton’s desperation and determination to save the whoo people and by god he’s gonna do it! Such an underrated movie and a childhood classic of mine.
