    After years of learning how to refine the bridge so that it becomes a vibrating extension of the strings producing resonance and a high degree of clarity and string sensitivity, I find that it has become much easier to create a wonderful tone. The sound has actually caused me to shift certain controls in the fingers with the responsiveness of the strings. Kind of a natural development.

    When you rotate the thumb it actually looks as if the forearm is rotating along with it which seems to be a safer way to allow the movement to happen. Trying to rotate the thumb independently or focusing on finger action without the larger arm support (the rotation at the elbow joint where supination and pronation really occur based on anatomical truth) that initiates the pronation and supination could lead to injury and pain. The radius (lower arm bone on the thumb side) is doing the rotating and the ulna (the lower arm bone on the pinkie side) is not. So it is important to know where to rotate from and not exclusively think of the thumb as doing the rotation. The movement you are showing looks safe and free- you appear to be initiating the rotation from the elbow joint.

    Hello Julia - greetings from the UK! I am double-jointed and was wondering if there was any way to avoid the right hand “pinkie” locking straight whilst bowing. As an adult beginner, I find your insights invaluable - please keep posting and thank you for all that you have shared so far - it is so very much appreciated.

    • @ViolinClassUSA
      @ViolinClassUSA  Před 3 lety

    • @hamwhacker
      @hamwhacker Před rokem

      Hi I am not an expert but I have thought about this. Maybe you need to put your pinkie on the near side of the octagonal surface at the frog. (Rather than on top of the frog). So that if your pinkie remains relaxed (there should always the ability to relax) then if would curl the correct way. Rather than slipping over and your little finger becoming straight or the bend inverted.
      I hope you have fixed your bow hold problem if you had one. Regards from UK

    Can you talk about what to do when students just CAN NOT keep the pinky on the bow stick curved and it always become straight and stiff? I have tried so hard for SO MANY YEARS and to no avail, it's driving me crazy!!! Should I use one of those bow hold aids on the market?

    • @ViolinClassUSA
      @ViolinClassUSA  Před 3 lety

      Are you dealing primarily with very young students (children)? There are different ways teaching younger age children. I am not against some props, but I suggest to use them for a short period of time only, more like an example. The reasons why pinkies may be straight are many. It could be that the bows are too heavy - in which case, they should hold them not at the frog but much higher. It could be that the ring finger is high on the stick and the pinky cannot curve... and other issues.

      @@ViolinClassUSA Thank you so much. My students are younger but not actually that young, the youngest are around 10 but they are beginners, and then there are some older ones who transferred to me but I haven’t had a good way to break their bad habit. Thanks for the suggestion, I will pay more attention to their ring finger height and bow weight (but I don’t think it’s too heavy).

    • @ViolinClassUSA
      @ViolinClassUSA  Před 3 lety

      К сожалению, и по-русски, и (часто даже) по-английски, существует неверное замещение понятий пронация и супинация. В то время, как Вы (или сам Юрий Исаевич) верно обозначаете пронацию (мы используем ее почти постоянно, меняя только ее угол), слово "супинация" к ведению смычка вообще никак не относится.
      Вот обозначение этого (медицинского) термина: "Супинация - это вращательное движение конечности или её части кнаружи. Например, если происходит супинация кисти руки, согнутой в локте под углом 90 градусов, то кисть из положения ладонью вниз поворачивается в положение ладонью вверх."

      Monika, for most left-handers the bow control is much more difficult. Do not despair. You need to have the double of perseverance and double the work. The good news is many of the left-handers manage to overcome the weaknesses. Good luck to you! I hope you are subscribed and will be able to study all of my videos.
