    In this video I reveal my new (to me) Up! GTI, a car I've been looking to buy as a light project for quite a long time, specifically to try and improve the ride quality and stop it banging over bumps. I also want to have some adventures in it, something I didn't do with my own car owned from May 2018 to April 2019
    This video is made of the following sections;

      Thanks, I'll try and listen for it but I edit with headphones these days so I might just not be picking it up. Ultimately not much I can do as using high quality Rode radio mics and their own lavalier mic and a GoPro. There are 2 cameras being used, into and driving is different to the walkaround bits, does it vary between those sections or is all the footage the same?

    Great to see you back in an Up! GTI Andrew. Your videos a couple of years ago encouraged me to order my 71 plate 5 door also in Tungsten Silver, 18 months into ownership and love the little motor.
    So far I’ve swapped to Michelin PS4 tyres in 205 width and upgraded to stage 1 with a JBS map and resonated Milltek cat back exhaust with Forge intake and BOV. Considering swapping over to the Racing line induction kit as like the look of it over the Forge item and also taking off the blow off valve as fun as it’s been I’m the wrong side of 40 so can live without the constant tsssh sounds 😂. Suspension wise I’m looking at KW v1 coilovers, will be brilliant to see which route you take to improve the handling.

    Great colour and spec Andrew! 👍🏼
    ECU map and rubber are a great place to start.
    Hopefully it now gets off the line without TCS pooping the party? If not, there’s a company called JBS in Chesterfield which does a switchable TCS mod (doesn’t affect the ABS). I didn’t get this done however so can’t recommend from experience…
    Next for me would be to get it sitting a bit lower on some decent springs and dampers. I’ve been very impressed with the KW V3 coilovers on my S3.
    Bulb upgrade for the woeful headlights is a must. I’ve got a set here you’re welcome to have.
    After that, I might upgrade the discs/pads/hoses and/or look at aftermarket wheels.
    The front seats aren’t great, but your options with those are limited. Not much space for something bigger/better, is there?
    That lot should keep you busy for a while! 🔧

      Welcome back to the Up GTI owners club.
      Still loving mine, even more so that it is worth the same as when I bought it in 2018.
      Mine has Bistein coilovers as recommended by you, with Advan Flava tyres, that combo has given a much improved ride, and the tyres are still good after 20000 miles.
      Interesting that most don't have the height adjustable passenger seat, it is why my wife doesn't like the car😂.

    Agree best way to go is tyres dampers and remap. Went for Bilstein B4s. Better handling better ride and you can overtake with confidence. I got the JBS map but I bet they’re similar - as you said keeps the power delivery character of stock. So much fun being able to go flat out so much of the time compared to the more serous hot hatches of today. The brakes hardly get a look in

  • @gardupgti4609
    @gardupgti4609 Před 11 měsíci

    Delighted to see you in an UP GTI again. Great!
    I also put the 205 tyres on (mine are Sportmaxx RT2s - which seem excellent to me), and it made a huge difference.
    You mention long trips.
    My daughter and I took the car from Provence to Brittany and back (2K Km round trip), camping overnight on the way, with all the equipment in the back. Also been to the Alps twice in it from Provence. No autoroute (although it goes fine on the well surfaced A7 down to Marseille airport and back, even with the Mistral blowing). The car is brilliant at two up, long distance, no-motorway outings. Over the Ardeche mountain roads, the Vercours, the Alps. On the RN through the countryside. So much fun. Really grips and pulls out of corners, is small enough and light enough to do everything well. Much better than my MK7 GTD at that stuff.
    Also brilliant on the local, well surfaced tight twisty roads.
    I wince at any upcoming pothole though.
    So I am really looking forward to your recommendation re: suspension.
    I'm not interested in track performance, just keeping the car as is without that horrible banging.
    I'm sure the few times I've hit a speed bump or unexpected lump in the road has already damaged the chassis/suspension interface....
    I would keep this over the GTD if I had to sell one of them.
    Thanks

    I knew it would only be a matter of time. Great to see you back in an up! GTI Andrew, and great content for the channel too. An exhaust would be on the cards for me, nothing booming, just a nice note, you could then disconnect the artificial sound actuator too. I'd also drop it as part of the handling upgrade, the rear especially has always given off-road vibes. Not in keeping with its sports pedigree. All the best.

      @volkswizard  Před 11 měsíci +5

    @nigelrodgers5240 Před 9 měsíci

    Just bought an UP GTI and am working my way through your suggested modifications. Previously you advised that an engine remap was probably unnecessary. Now you own one with a remap, have you changed your mind?

    • @volkswizard
      @volkswizard  Před 9 měsíci

      I have changed my mind because the Racingline one is very subtle and doesn’t excessively trouble the TC. It really only feels noticeably punchier at motorway speeds when traction not an issue. I did a video of this car being mapped around a year ago and was surprised as it was so subtle. Most mods go too far - too low, too hard and in the case of remaps too spikey

    • @nigelrodgers5240
      @nigelrodgers5240 Před 9 měsíci

      Thanks, I may try this. I traded in my completely stock Cayman 2.7 for the up, after having it as my daily driver for 14 years. Surprised how much fun the up GTI is. Had parking sensors and cruise control retrofitted, then added gas strut for the bonnet support, Nightbreaker H4, Osram Diadem indicators, ITG air filter. Having KW Variant 1 suspension fitted on Thursday - lead time for Bilstein too long. That just leaves the tyres and the remap! I ALMOST don't miss the Porsche at all. Thanks for your videos, they always seem balanced and well presented.

  • @andrewmcivor42
    @andrewmcivor42 Před 11 měsíci

    A great video of a fantastic & underrated car! Personally, I would rather have your Up! GTi over the current Golf 8 GTi.... it's definitely got the spirit of the original Golf GTi & the mods must make a huge difference - I had a shot of an Up! GTi on a test drive & whilst I liked it (it wasn't actually for me), the grip felt rubbish. The tyre upgrade is really a no brainer!
    I am curious about the remap - whilst it sounds like a great mod, doesn't it have implications re insurance? Such as having to find a specialist insurance broker? I ask, as I might do a few small bits to my Golf when it's out of warranty (particularly the Racingline induction kit).
    If I didn't need something bigger (a large dog & self catering trips away), I'd happily have an Up!
    By the way, one thing I'd disagree with you on is the Beats pack - a "must have" for me. Just put some acoustic matting in the doors & boot, you're sorted (having had a few drives in an Up! Beats TSi, I can definitely agree that it's quite "tinny" for an upgraded hifi as standard. And it's also a bit tight for space to fit an upgraded aftermarket system.
    Great content, as usual 👍. Nice to see another project car on the go - whilst I enjoy your reviews of the current VW range, the actual cars don't interest me at all (I knocked back my local VW dealer who were trying to get me to buy a new Golf R Estate they had on order - I'd rather keep my current one)!

    Good to hear from you again Andrew.
    My Up GTI is exactly the same and same age. Garaged and in perfect nic after 10,000 miles. Mostly driven in France on vocation.
    I replaced the tyres shortly after buying and lowered the suspension with Bilstein.
    The best advice I received from the fitter, was to use 32psi all round, instead of the recommended. Much better ride.
    A nice touch was to add 'Diamond' carpets. Beautifully made and with red stitching, which adds to the GTI feel.
    Does remapping adversely affect insurance premiums? My one concern.

    I had the Asymetric 5's on my old TDI 170, grip in the wet was unreal, could push on almost as normal in torrential conditions. The only downside was I had a couple of them crack all round the outer groove, so had to replace them as a precaution with very little wear on them otherwise. Hopefully this issue doesn't crop up on the 6's

    I’ve just had it remapped and wow what a difference to it’s standard 100 Hp. It still feels nice and standard with just a nice bit of extra power, very linear too, and my fuel economy has increased too (I don’t have lead feet).

    • @volkswizard
      @volkswizard  Před 11 měsíci +1

      Not sure what tuning chip is but if it’s like a tuning box then I’d usually go remap as long as it’s a good one. Racingline’s tuning box has good reviews but you get a lot more performance with their map but you can’t take it off and sell it like a tuning box. If you just want a bit more punch and the ability to take it off then box is fine. If it’s not a Performance model and you don’t have the VAQ diff then I would not remap as traction is going to get messy

    Horses for courses but it’s mad you can get a 2020 e-up cheaper than the GTI (or save 1k more and get a Mii) would be interesting to do a traffic light GP (CarWow style) to see which wins.

    • @volkswizard
      @volkswizard  Před 11 měsíci +1

      All electric cars are cheaper than their ICE equivalents in the UK on the used market. I’d love to try e-up but it starts off with not much range and in 8 years how much will it have then? Definitely won’t be cost effective to renew battery so it becomes a poor a to b device. Not sure how that’s environmentally friendly. The GTI can live indefinitely as long as their are fossil or synthetic fuels hence why it’s worth more

    • @shikoku14
      @shikoku14 Před 11 měsíci

      @@volkswizard it will be interesting to look at the first e-Golf’s from 2014 to prove or disprove this battery’s need to be replaced after 8 years theorem that certain media seem to be pushing, just because that’s how long manufacturers warranty the batteries doesn’t mean that’s when they fail. If that were the case all VWs would be falling to bits after 3 years of you apply that logic to them 😂. For your average up driver the 150 mile range of the 2020+ triplets would be more than enough 90% of the time

    I have PS5's on mine - they totally transform the handling. As you already know, the stock headlights are terrible - I put LED's in mine and swap them out for the MOT . A cheap upgrade is an auto lights switch from eBay - works a treat. Totally agree that it is under damped, but it still makes me smile every time I drive it.

    • @volkswizard
      @volkswizard  Před 11 měsíci +2

      Thanks for the comment Geoff, love to hear owners' feedback. Does the cheap auto lights switch actually give you auto lights as it needs a light sensor and I don't think it has one otherwise. I was hoping by now someone like Osram would have design a whole new light unit with proper illumination from LED. Guess I'll be OK for a few months yet :)

    • @Geoffbell01
      @Geoffbell01 Před 11 měsíci

      @@volkswizard agreed about the "whole light unit" - the standard candles are dreadful but the LED's make a huge difference - correctly installed they're the same beam pattern as the halogens and I've never been flashed at. The auto lights switch comes with a small sensor about 5mm in diameter - I ran it up the inside of the A pillar and stuck to the screen in the top right hand corner - works fine.

    NA uP only in Oz and then discontinued prior to facelift and no GTI - base Polo 1.0 TSI manual avail here with 70kw but nobody buys them and no other manuals in VW fleet - we’ve been conned onto SUVs but thankfully Golf with independent rear and Passat wagons still sold for now - will be interesting to see damper upgrade without any lowering of ride height as surely need all travel that springs provide on bumps 🤞🎯

    • @volkswizard
      @volkswizard  Před 11 měsíci +1

      1.0. TSI has potential, it’s super rare here too. I think the springs can be shorter if a bit more progressive. It seems initially firm but bigger imperfections the springs just compress and it runs out of travel. It’s as if the dampers are too weak. Problem is the Up is so light so suspension doesn’t have much weight to support which is fine until you hit a pothole and then the suspension loading increases massively as if the car was a lot heavier. Need to do varied miles and pin down what’s good and bad now & go from there😆

Then they stopped making it, then it came back at an even higher price! Look at rivals like Abarth 595 and it’s still a cheap car. @@volkswizard no, I drive a 2013 TT TFSI (Somoa Orange Black Edition Amplified Pack) & a BMW 1 M Coupe. The Golf R's are also dull cars as well to me (I prefer the original R32 to look at) & something like a GR Yaris just does nothing for me, & therefore I link the same feeling I have to this Up. Some cars to me, should just left alone to what they were originally designed for, to go A to B, easy to park at the supermarket & economical. There's nothing wrong with that, but just shoving in a bigger engine & sticking a GTI (or M or S) badge on it, doesn't suddenly make an UP become desirable to me. Again, I think this just dilutes the sporting badges in a manufacturers range, & makes them feel less special. Bring back the 80's & 90's when the hottest version from a manufacturer was more special. I'm sure it's fun to drive, but the looks & the name 'UP' just don't sit right.

      Let me tell you, I have completely changed my view of this little car as I found it amazing fun, & the 115bhp seemed quicker than I first thought. The 6 speed gearbox was a joy to use, & I even got used to the 3 cylinder raw of the engine after awhile.
      It was great around the bends on B roads, & also it was good on the motorway, easily pulling well in 6th gear to pass other cars. I also couldn't believe how hard I tried I couldn't get the mpg figure below 50mpg. I'm a fan.

    I disagree with what you say about remaps on cars like golf r or rs6. You might not need the extra performance but in reality you don't need more than 130bhp in a golf. You remap it simply because you want more not need more. It's not like old jap cars that are complicated to tune and with automatic and awd you can put the power down easily. I like remapping aslong as it's done by a reputable tuner
