  • Land Restitution is a cornerstone of transformational development in South Africa. People dispossesed of their heritage during the era of colonialism and apartheid now have a few opportunities to put things right. But it's not a simple matter: skills have been lost, societal structures have changed, vested interests cloud the issue, government is struggling to implement the noble plans with limited capacity of its own, and on top of it all, environmental issues have, in the interim, become of pressing concern. SANBI, together with other agencies, most significantly the Dept of Rural Dev and Land Reform and the community land restitution beneficiaries, are trying to work out the models for balancing biodiversity stewardship with rural development for communities confronted with this immense task for which they are poorly equipped. In this clip we hear some sound-bites from the different players in the game at a "learning exchange" held in rural Mpumalanga in early December 2010. See also the interviews with Lubabalo and Nomcebo.
