When out of the darkness appears the silhouette of a huge dog. Either a Great Dane or Irish Wolfhound. But as it got a little closer to my dog. It looked like a giant German Shepherd or Husky. I started thinking it was the biggest German Shepherd I've ever seen. Then it got a little a closer & couldn't believe my eyes. That it was wolf, once it realized my dog was with me. It turned and disappeared into the darkness. When I got home & looked online. It said a wolf had been sighted a few months earlier. In the county just north of mine.
I've seen several coyotes before up close and it wasn't a coyote.

If you were to move forward toward her and her cubs in a threatening manner, that would be a mistake. Basically, you obey, you're fine. You object, it will probably not end well, as you'll end up being hurt or hurting a momma who has younglings to care for. Please, just listen to her and do what she asks. Back off and don't pretend to a threat. Otherwise, you are a threat, and that doesn't end well for all parties involved.
Again, momma bears might be different. I don't know them. But we're talking about momma cats here, and they will take on any threat to their cubs. You really don't want to "demonstrate dominance and move toward them" when they are protecting their babies. That only ends one way, and it's not good.

That cougar is not stalking the hiker to be its prey; she was intimidating him to go away from her little kittens. By the way she looked back at where her kitties were, she was trying to tell the hiker that she was on a defensive mode and was following him to make sure he was far away from her kittens. This is why I personally don't stare or run towards any animal's babies (not even for dogs, I do not) because I know how defensive they can be.

As somebody who's experienced a life threatening situation once, l feel like when flight or fight kicks in you become a lot more alert, dexterous and smart for a brief period of time but you feel extremely tired afterwards. You're not your usual average self in those kind of situations. So don't put yourself down like that. Your survival skills are probably better than you think they are.
