Where he messed up is continuing to walk backwards perpetuating the cat’s stalking instinct... only thing he did right was not turn his back.
This happens along trails A LOT though. So it’s an “unbelievable” story at all.

@@MartinAston00 If he stopped walking the cougar would have most certainly have charged and pinned him down. Because she had babies if he tried to be big and bad and try to stand up to himself like you would do with a black bear, it more than likely would have so him as a threat and tried to have killed him. though I will agree with your terms of how he did not turn away from a cougar, I do not agree he should have stopped walking backwards.

He had a dirt road. In 2006, I had to climb backwards uphill for quite a trek. Heart racing and calves and quads burning. Never stopped or slowed with that adrenaline though. Amd the hill had a steep grade for walking backwards
I had an odd encounter with a huge lone wolf . While walking my pit bull off leash about 2am in the summer near the Illinois River. My dog was about 30ft ahead of me. When out of the darkness appears the silhouette of a huge dog. Either a Great Dane or Irish Wolfhound. But as it got a little closer to my dog. It looked like a giant German Shepherd or Husky. I started thinking it was the biggest German Shepherd I've ever seen. Then it got a little a closer & couldn't believe my eyes. That it was wolf, once it realized my dog was with me. You have no idea how hard you made me laugh, man.
Ok
I am a licensed forester. The very first minute is when you demonstrate dominance and move toward the animal making loud noise. If not, they sense weakness and will stalk you or lay in the brush waiting. This has happened to me TWICE. I carry bear spray but have not used it yet.
You're saying move toward the mom, toward her cubs? Are you sure that's the smart move here? I mean, this guy survived by slowly backing up. Somehow, I get the sense that you'd be dead in this situation threatening a mom and her cubs further.
@@KittyBoom360 bears and mountain lions are definitely different but we are told by CDFW to do as I described. I carry bear spray on most jobs.
@@jsmcguireIII I don't know bears, but momma cats will defend their young to the death. They will even sacrifice themselves to save their young. If you were to move forward toward her and her cubs in a threatening manner, that would be a mistake. In the case of a momma cat, I really think it is better to show you're not a threat and to deesculate the situation as opposed to esculating it, which is what this person did and escaped without incident.
Basically, you obey, you're fine. You object, it will probably not end well, as you'll end up being hurt or hurting a momma who has younglings to care for. Please, just listen to her and do what she asks. Back off and don't pretend to a threat. Otherwise, you are a threat, and that doesn't end well for all parties involved.
Again, momma bears might be different. I don't know them. But we're talking about momma cats here, and they will take on any threat to their cubs. You really don't want to "demonstrate dominance and move toward them" when they are protecting their babies. That only ends one way, and it's not good.
That's very dangerous. He could drop his phone and that would be tragic.
In some circumstances that may be the right move, but she was trying to escort him away from her babies. He's alive because he cooperated with what she wanted him to do (back away... way, far far away from babies) Coming at her woulds have triggered defense, and wouldn't have ended well.
Being big and loud, sure.. good idea with a cougar, but coming at her? No.

Cougars are ambush predators. They often attack from high ground or trees before even being seen. Never ever turn your back in a situation like this. They know which direction your eyes are facing, they know where your neck is. They go straight for the throat. Very powerful animals.

This is why I personally don't stare or run towards any animal's babies (not even for dogs, I do not) because I know how defensive they can be.

That's the smart thing to do. If you turn and run, you die. A cougar or a bear is faster and stronger than you. You will not escape it. You have to convince the creature that attacking you could be dangerous, that it's not worth their time or chance of suffering injury to engage. So you yell, scream, stand big, widen yourself, etc. Anything to make it run off.

Hahaha
Your correct, he had an adrenalin dump the last 100 feet.
For those commenting about picking up a rock, the times the cougar tried to pounce were the times he tries to pick up a rock. It was explained on his interview
I was thinking he could have kicked rocks with his feet. Bending down to pick up a rock makes you look smaller. You have to make yourself bigger and scream. He probably also shouldn't have backed up since that shows the cougar he's scared
@@paulab.3712 easy for you to say. The distance between them was kinda closed so kicking rocks might trigger the cougar to attack him, you never know. He did the best way he could
@@paulab.3712 No you want to back up. If you tern on look away that's when cats attack. It's probably defending cubs nearby as cats aren't usually aggressive.
Thank you, I never saw the interview.
@@paulab.3712 Kicking rocks might make him lose his footing, even if it's momentarily the cougar would pounce on that.

@@australianwoman9696 Grab a rock? You know that the reason why wild animals sometimes hesitate to attack human because we impose taller height than them? If he tries to grab a rock and bend down, the person becomes small and it will increase cougar's confidence to launch an attack.
And not to mention there is huge possibility it will provoke the cougar to attack the man if he throws an object.
I've been hiking in some forest at sumatera, and the first thing we are being told to do when encounter animals like tiger, elephant, or orangutan is to not let your guard down by keep standing still and show some confidence by shouting or walking forward slowly, and most importantly NEVER provoke them unless it's unavoidable.
He did a great job at staying calm, and not taking off running as most people would have done, that is what saved his life, he kept making commands, showing he's big, and he never turned away from the cougar.
