I've been visiting Asheville since 2009 and want to make the jump to move there full time. As far as the lack of diversity goes, yeah Asheville isn't NYC, but it's also not the usual Hee Haw po-dunk convention out there like many other southern towns.
The freak flag is alive and well and that's what made me fall in love with Asheville in addition to the nature all around and the music scene. A big improvement over my native Fayetteville NC.

Meanwhile in Raleigh and what I now call "The Greater Raleigh area" aka every single town that is now basically part of the city, there are hardly any natives left. Everyone is from Michigan, Ohio, New York, New Jersey, etc etc etc. Including me.

Great video! The only thing I am concerned with is the amount of development that is going on in this town. Seems like it is taking away the eclectic feel and beauty that Asheville is known for. The cost of living is also driving out the people that make this town so unique. I have heard that the new city council is trying to halt the amount of development taking place ...I am hoping that this is true. I really like this town and hope that it maintains a chill, artsy mountain town atmosphere.

Bugsdad is right. Diversity isn't necessarily a con. The more diverse an area is, the more special interests groups develop - that increases your cost of living, and the quality of the programs become diluted / horribly implemented, especially if these programs are started in schools. This is why are educational facilities are in a downward spiral. There are plenty of ways to incorporate diversity into an individuals life without turning these areas into terrible poorly ran big cities.

I live in the Asheville area, moved here 22 years ago. For the past 2-3 years we've been getting inundated with folks moving here from NYC, LA, Florida etc. They are mainly increasing and "fancyfying" housing to the standards of where they left. Especially the values which are now so high that regular working folks, think grocery clerks, restaurant servers, hotel staff etc cannot afford to live here without working 2 or 3 jobs. The funky, small town vibe is definitely leaving quickly. Parking and traffic are getting ridiculous and very frustrating. Come and visit please but DO NOT MOVE HERE!

Asheville is okay but I think I'll stick to bigger cities. Many people there when I go there kept looking at me and my kiddo like we were strange. Lol go to San Diego, Orange county, Olympia Washington, and LA never had that "look". Lived in Waynesville for a year for a job and the experience was hit or miss with people. I saw some blatant racist people mocking Hispanic that could not speak English well or even this lady accusing my 4 year old daughter then from stealing a candy in front of everyone to shame a kid! ( what she didn't expect was a brown man that could speak English and was willing to fight back against blatant racist targeting) but of course there was many kind folks too that made it feel less of a culture shock. One thing I couldn't stand when my kiddo was in kindergarten, the kids actually said that they would get kidnapped because she was brown! Racism is taught not born with. I even had this encounter where this cashier told me if I spoke English. So many times I was passed over for a job promotion because the person had family or because they were " local". It's not the best environment to move up in the world, I'm sure Asheville would be better but the main reason I'm heading back go the west coast is the culture is much better for my kiddo in the long run. I wanted to experience that rural life but man was it very an unpleasant experience because my color had a play into factors that should not been based on an individuals capabilities.

@@BigRudy53 Actually you don't know me and I don't know you but I find your comment offensive. Truthfully Being a lesbian human being, a gay man, a bisexual person or a transgender person is the Original definition of diversity. The LGBT Community created the Human Rights slogan "Embrace Diversity." You're homophobic.

Christians used to control government here. The loonies started taking over when Lennie Sitnick was mayor back in the 80s. This transplant from Russia doesn't know what she's talking about, she's only here to capitalize on the money coming in... 👎👎

Yeah, I'm sure a mountain town in NC is chock full of diversity, lol. Looking it up, as you would expect of the South, it's about 80% white, > 10% black, and a smattering of other minorities. Oh, and NC went Trump by 5% in 2016, just so you know what politics your neighbor is likely to have statistically...
