It does not matter, what they did is a rookie and potentially lethal mistake, bullet might easily go off late, and only luck helped nobody to get hurt that day. Weird to see it from "professionals", kinda lame weird flex.

Same, but even if you know it's unloaded 100%, it's a habit thing. Get used to looking down the barrel and eventually you may do it when you thought you were 100% sure, and that's that. They should've cut that part from the video as a lot of younger potential gun owners and enthusiasts watch these channels and we certainly don't want them thinking they should be doing this because professionals on CZcams, in their eyes, did it before.

I've looked into this before and all the (very valid) reasons it never caught on, but the *much* higher risk of ricochets never occurred to me.
Every other gun loses energy after firing, and much more after hitting something. This is a rocket, speeding up as it goes. It can hit something, bounce around, then accelerate right back towards the wielder - just as deadly as when it left the barrel. It's so obvious after watching the video, but I never heard anyone mention it, nor had i thought of it before.

Although boltgun rounds are more like two stage rockets with a warhead since they have shellcasings and an initial propellant. The rocket motor kicks in after the bolt round leaves the barrel.

Small Arms Review did a fairly comprehensive article on the Gyrojet story and its developer Richard Mainhardt some years ago. Taofledermaus did what's probably the single best recent test firing of the Gyrojet pistol and carbine a few years ago. Backyard Ballistics in Italy tried recreating the rockets on a larger scale a few years ago as well, with some success. There were at least a few snub versions of the pistol made, and some select fire versions of both pistol and carbine. At least one pistol was used in combat in Vietnam, and was reportedly effective. They've also been fired underwater. That's all covered in the Small Arms Review report from the early 2000s.
Addition: looks like all of the reported Gyrojet problems surfaced. Misfires, variable velocities, sometimes wild inaccuracy, and maximum velocity isn't reached until some distance from the gun. Before which velocity can be very low and the rocket is easily deflected. Even when new, performance of the little Gyrojet rockets was somewhat erratic. I believe it's been determined that the propellent was a single formed grain of Bullseye smokeless powder wrapped in flash paper. There seems to have been another one or two unknown secret components of the ammunition to increase immediate acceleration from the launcher.

They have a use, just the reliability of the rounds is the problem. They are designed to fire underwater and in space. Underwater they do better than conventional bullets, but not much is great underwater. In space though they help with Newton's third law of motion. "If two bodies exert forces on each other, these forces have the same magnitude but opposite directions". Basically in space a light machine gun is also a great way to do somersaults backwards when fired. You have mass, but no gravity to align you to the ground. So 5.56 at 1200 foot pounds of force going forward also means that going backwards, enough to push a 250 pound man back a few inches a second.

have to love when collectors are willing to blow the dust off of some seriously coo pieces of history. big respect for Joel on this as most with something that rare would not be willing to risk a malfunction or the wear of basic use. much respect

At 22:09, you can see it land maybe about 5-6 feet in front to the right of Matt, and seems to bounce off further to the right. Not sure if this is the "spinning" Matt saw or not, but thought I'd point it out. I think the Gyrojet would have been an awesome and unique gun for Black Ops 1, seeing as it's from a very similar time period. Thanks to Joel for providing this awesome video!

This gun does exist in Resident Evil 8, it's called the Rocket Pistol in-game. It's the only game I remember seeing it in, and even there it kinda sucks lol

At 22:24 you can see his shirt ripple from the wind of the bullet ricocheting and almost hitting him

@@olivegodGoddamn that's crazy. I would've loved to see if you could see it on the slow mo camera but I don't think they'd show it

Black ops 1 had the G11, which fired caseless ammunition similar to the pistol shown in the video

That was one of the most amazing things I've ever seen on the internet! It was like I'm watching a cartoon...but no: that was real life. A guy actually just did that.
