  • "There is a new warmth these days in the friendship between South Africa and Britain..."
To mark the state visit of South African President Cyril Ramaphosa to Britain - the first state visit hosted by King Charles III - ITN Archive presents these rushes of Queen Elizabeth II hosting President Nelson Mandela at Buckingham Palace during his 1996 state visit to Britain. The Queen had invited Mandela to Britain following her own visit to South Africa in March 1995.
At a grand banquet, both Queen Elizabeth and President Mandela made powerful speeches discussing the past, present, and future of the relationship between Britain and South Africa. The Queen celebrated the progress made in improving racial equality in South Africa in the years since the end of apartheid. Both Mandela and the Queen joked about the England cricket team's tour of South Africa in 1995-6, which saw England lose a 5-match Test series to their hosts.
The banquet was attended by senior members of the Royal Family including Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother, Prince Andrew, Duke of York, Princess Anne, Princess Royal, and Prince Charles, Prince of Wales. Other high-profile attendees included former Conservative Prime Minister Ted Heath, former Labour leader Neil Kinnock, Labour MP Bernie Grant, Archbishop of Canterbury George Carey, and veteran ITN journalist Trevor McDonald. President Mandela attended the banquet along with his daughter, Zenani Mandela-Diamini.

I am South African and I deeply miss that dignified and wise old man who made us all so proud. I also grieve the loss of Her Gracious Majesty, the Queen Mother and Prince Philip. Flights of angels sang them to their rest, may they rest in peace

Proud to look at this as a South African. Madiba was much loved all over the world. He is gone, but not forgotten. I know he had a relationship with HM the late Queen. They called each other on the name. This world has lost great Leaders with the passing on of our beloved Madiba and the much loved HM the Queen. If only we can learn from them, we would be better off. I salute them.

The Queen actually wore these jewels because Nelson Mandela told her how he admired her when she danced with Nkrumah in Ghana in 1961. Ghana was the first black colony to get full independence from Britain and Nkrumah its first black President. He, however wasn't enamoured of the Commonwealth and was flirting with the Soviet Union. Krushev had made a visit. The Queen was advised it was too dangerous for her to go but she insisted she was going not as Queen of Britain but Head of the Commonwealth.
The Queen flew into Accra and made headlines across the globe by dancing with Nkrumah wearing the same jewels she's seen wearing at the State banquet. Mandela told her he'd been very impressed by her and she had convinced him of her dedication to the Commonwealth. South Africa rejoined the Commonwealth under his leadership to the joy of the Queen. She had been crowned Queen of South Africa and had made her 21st birthday speech there during her first overseas tour to Southern Africa with her parents and sister in 1947.

How interesting to see Her Majesty clap at the end of Mr Mandela’s speech. Surely a very rare sign of approval (and display of affection).

Watching all the way from South Africa. This is more than a joy to behold real royalty including our beloved Mr. President Mandela and his delegation. All of them are such royalty as far as I'm concerned. I'm in tears to pieces just watching this... Although I miss him, I'm glad in a way that Honorable Mandela is not here to see the damage done/is doing of Meghan and Harry to South Africa. As an American in the Foreign Service serving South Africa, I am highly embarrassed and offended by this #@!%^&* duo . Thank you for sharing.

God places souls strategically. The recent ones in the Royal establishment are very different in mentality from the ancestry. The new ones make way for humanitarian change. Let groups not punish the current British Royal blood, but support the changes. Please.

This visit was so uncomfortable. Nelson was mercurial, one minute jolly, the next like a statue. The Queen didn't know what to make of it and Prince Philip backed off the two Mandela's and was out.

No the British Queen did not rule South Africa when apartheid was going on . South Africa was kicked out of the commonwealth because of the South African government position on apartheid and the Queen used her soft power to campaign for Nelson’s release from prison.
