  • Both the SST and 50.2 versions reviewed. Excellent budget lights whose performance defies the asking price.

I wonder how well the XHP50.2 will do if you shave the dome 🤔

I have the XHP50.2 version and I love it. I prefer the larger hot spot and brighter spill. I set the thermal stepdown by following the instructions and I did by running the thermal calibration mode at room temperature for just over 2 minutes. This is now the new thermal limit. I wouldn't even consider using timed mode. While it would probably be fine on a very conservative setting, repeated uses of turbo in a short time will definitely compromise the internals over time.
You mentioned the Convoy M3 and it stepping down at around 60 seconds. That's more the battery than the temperature of the light. With my EBL 26650 5000mAh (inexpensive cell) I get about 30 seconds before it steps down. With my Shockli 26650 5500mAh cell I get about 1 minute 45 seconds, and with my Samsung 40T 21700 cell I get about 2 minutes 20 seconds, and yes, a 21700 easily fits in this light. Just go to the local hardware store and get some o rings that fit around the battery but also allow it to fit in the light without getting stuck. I have the plastic tube adapters that came with my Astrolux MF01 Mini's, but they rattle around too much. And using a Samsung 18650 30Q I get about 1 minute 35 seconds at 100%, this one surprised me that it made it that long. All were tested at room temperature (about 20C) starting with a fully charged battery and fully cooled M3 for each battery. The M3 was just slightly warm at the end of the three longer run times. Some protected cells won't even work in the 100% mode. That XHP70.2 is a HUGE led and it consumes a lot of power. I think it's the large current draw and sudden voltage drop of the battery that makes it step down. I'm not disappointed at all with the light since it puts out around 1400 lumens in the 40% mode and it can run that until the battery gets too low to maintain it. And the 10% mode is around 400 lumens. Easily enough light to safely walk and have good visibility.

Thanks M8ty - yes I've had a play around with different batteries. Protected can be very hit and miss, some tripping out straight away, some throttling back on the output etc. I'm very much switched over to unprotected high drain nowadays (in torches that have over discharge protection).

You can turn off the light in the button. It has 4 modes, high - low - blinking - off. Tap 7 times on it to cycle.

Still havent decided which to get. The online shop in my country sells both at almost the identical price, but the sst40 comes with a battery, while the xhp50 doesn't.

Both are excellent lights. I prefer the SST model but that is personal preference. So it were me if you can get the SST with a battery even better!
