    As someone who is part of the viking reenactment in Denmark, this was fun to watch - wouldn't recommend doing it this way to build a shield for fighting, as it would be quite heavy in the long run...
    But as I said, it was fun to watch how it could be made in the modern era 😊

    When I was apart of a Viking living history group (it was more like a drinking club) those that made shields just grabbed some box store 3/8" 4'X4' plywood... fast, dirty and practically no major investment beyond the center boss.

      Exactly, and the metal bowl can be reused for several shields (the wood get worn out during the season if you fight weekly 😂)

    Cool build. Excellent tunes! I'm not sure Buddy was 100% on board with the rawhide. Cheers! (watching with Dave the dog north of you in Traverse City)

      Haha! I ended up rolling the rawhide up and drying it for him. I love going up to Traverse!

    What a fun project. I’ll tell my wife her kitchen island is on hold, found something else to build. Seriously though, since you have the rawhide you could have made your own glue and abandon that modern wood glue. Just put the rawhide in water and heat for a while and you have hide glue. Just like the Viking would have made

    • @CraftsmansLegacy
      @CraftsmansLegacy  Před 3 lety

      I never thought of trying to make glue! I might have to do that one day.

    You have some of the coolest projects and your Viking shield has to top the list! It turned out great!! Such a creative venture! I have to ask... did you replace Buddy's rawhide bone that you used in your project?? He seemed to be a little protective of his property!! Lol!! I see that he's still supervising all your woodworking projects! I enjoyed your video. Very interesting and professionally executed, as always! You and Buddy enjoy your weekend! God bless!

      @@CraftsmansLegacy now I got it! That's why Buddy got part of his bone back!! I think I'm a little slow these days!! I thought that sheet of rawhide was mighty big to have been a dog bone!! Glad your Buddy didn't have to make the sacrifice!

    Such a cool project and awesome video! Interesting to learn how these shields were made and it was fun to watch how you created each component. Love those nails and the hammered metal cover! It must have taken a long time to make one of these shields back in Viking times. Poor Buddy, I can't believe you took his bone! =D

    Слишком толстый и тяжелый, это кулачковый щит и в бою он применялся как активное и маневренное средство защиты, поэтому толщина щитов не превышала 8-12мм и веса 3-5 кг.
