  • Out of all the environments that JRPGs take you to over the course of their long journeys, beach settings have gotta be some of my favorites due to their super chill, relaxing ambience. It's a bit more than that though, so this love letter to JRPG beaches goes into detail on exactly why.

    I'm glad somebody made a JRPG beach appreciation video. Even though we have plenty of them IRL, there is just something about the ones you find in videogames that make you feel a certain way.

    All the settings I've ever most wanted to spend time in (and fantasized about visiting) have been the nice warm tropical ones.
    Heck, even some desert environments, like Gerudo town in BOTW fit the bill.
    I think it's because I associate the idea of sand and warm sunlight with vacations.

    • @GamingBroductions
      @GamingBroductions  Před 3 lety

      I feel that. Some of the desert locations in the Tales games can be pretty cozy. We plan on making a similar video about deserts in JRPGs actually. I liked Gerudo Valley in ocarina of time as well, it was a nice contrast to go to a more exotic, brighter location right after the darkness of the shadow temple. Plus that music…

    Another great video, thank you again for putting these together. Really like the more "cozy" videos myself, maybe as future videos you could look at or rank different towns in JRPGs?
    For me, two games which stand out the most in terms of beaches are Chrono Cross and Legend of Mana. Chrono Cross is an okay game with an amazing atmosphere, design and music. The setting stands out the most out of anything. I beat Legend of Mana for the first time last year and the beach levels (especially the pirate ship area) stood out to me a lot.

    • @GamingBroductions
      @GamingBroductions  Před 3 lety +3

      No problem at all, I’m glad you enjoy them. Do you mean more videos like the top 10 tropical towns we did? Or more of a conversational piece like this video style, just over different types of towns instead?
      Yep atmosphere is what Chrono Cross does best, and music of course. Tbh I need to give Legend of Mana some more time, I remembered the beach level but didn’t get super far when I last played it. It’s just such a different type of game and I don’t think I was ready for it at the time

      @@GamingBroductions Yeah that video was great. Maybe something around top 10 cozy/beautiful jrpg towns on a certain system or a certain series. Looking over the titles of some of your other videos and, while it's impossible to guess the secret of the algorithm, using more specific terms (like a system or series name) to be caught in searches might help get extra viewers.

    Beaches can definitely be chill, and I noticed that you do like that sort of thing, but I think it would be really cool if you did a video on when beaches AREN'T chill. For example, beaches can often be places where battles are fought, like, full on warfare. For example WWII games that feature the invasion of Normandy, or in Ghost of Tsushima. As far as RPGs are concerned, Final Fantasy has certainly leveraged this motif, for example the Dollet mission in Final Fantasy 8 starts out that way. That mission also ends on the beach, usually in a very climactic way, with Quistis shooting the crap out of the robot. Another Final Fantasy example that comes to mind is in FF9, there's a very somber scene that takes place on the beach, a major event in the plot and in Garnet's arc (I won't reference it directly, spoilers and all). But you wouldn't necessarily have to restrict this video to JRPGs. I think it could be really cool.

  • @barry-allenthe-flash8396

    Well, I'll be honest - I really don't care about the beach in real-life, so I really don't care that much about beach locations in JRPGs. It's a thing that I immediately just identify as a trope, mostly because every freakin' anime has a beach episode these days regardless of how pointless it is, and this is the gaming equivalent of that. It says to me that, if they're putting in a beach excursion story beat, they're also putting a goddamn fishing minigame in their game too, because they're loading up on tropey Japanese junk, lol.
    Sidenote; WTH is it with fishing minigames in JRPGs? Do they not have any other hobbies to draw from over there? Jeez - fishing is boring, Japan! Take a note from Yakuza and be more creative with your minigames! But I digress...
    I do really love these vibe/locations in JRPGs videos of your though, so even though I don't care for beaches in JRPGs by default, I gotta admit that even _I_ am moved by some of your descriptions and examples. Maybe I'll even start paying a _little_ more attention to beaches in games going forward after this, who knows?

    i'm not going to lie, when you say things like "It's pretty fuckin' obvious" you absolutely shatter the illusion you are trying to create.
    I think you should try to work on eliminating the swears from your videos. They're infrequent as it is and never fit the tone you're going for. The subject matter, editing and almost every other element is perfect but the narration needs work to reflect the quality of the other elements. I'm Australian. I'm not scared of swear words, but there is a time when they are and aren't appropriate and in a video about cosy, nostalgic beaches in 90's Jrpg's certainly isn't the place for it.

    • @GamingBroductions
      @GamingBroductions  Před 2 lety

      I hear ya, appreciate the feedback. In retrospect I can see why some swearing in a video like this would be a little jarring. I can’t promise swearing will be eliminated completely going forward but I will make a conscious effort to use it appropriately and not in videos where it’s supposed to be a relaxing vibe. We have a video on snowy locations coming out soon so I’ll make sure the script is more fitting and doesn’t have any out of place swearing
