Skyrim: 5 Things They Never Told You About Dragons

  • Skyrim is a land of numerous creatures, but perhaps the Elder Scrolls 5's most iconic inhabit would have to be Dragons. Large, winged beasts, said to be the children of Akatosh, the Dragons of Skyrim have returned from a long slumber and now seek to bring the world under their rule once again. Central to the game's plot, Skyrim's Dovahs are discussed frequently by the game, yet there's still quite a bit about these creatures the title intentionally tries to hide. So today we'll be taking a look at five things you (probably) never knew about the Dragons of The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim.

It would make sense, the Nords worshipped the dragons, the dragons were still in charge, when the elves attacked Sarthaal, it disrupted the dragon’s servants and work basically, and maybe the dragons wanted The Eye Of Magnus, Dragons do meddle in magic, so they maybe worked together to take over Skyrim and then the Dragon Cult rose, then the war against dragons and the cult, and the Eye was forgotten, but the Nords must of had help from dragons during the battle against falmer first…
      500 people killing all elves?
Hmmm seems exaggerated, and exactly what one side would write about the other, and they did build tons of temples to worship dragons in all over after they took over Skyrim. It’s dragon magic that keeps Draugr slowly feeding their life to the high Priest, just like a Dragonborn absorbs the soul of a dragon, a dragon priest can learn magic taught to them by dragons on how to absorb the life of others… it’s why few know this power, dragonborns, very high Priests, the graybeards and dragons themselves know how to do it..
The dragons were always in charge and they liked their slaves...
Dragons probably stayed in Atmora at first, ruling over Men, that’s why Elves barely mention them?
(Idk if elves or Falmer ever mention dragons as a problem)
who then came to Skyrim from Atmora after they made a deal to take over Skyrim for them and the Nords and wipe the elves out, something only a ruthless dragon army could and would do…. Maybe 🤷🏽‍♂️

I find it important to point out that you don’t have to be Dragonborn to use the Thu’um. Miraak is the confirmed first Dragonborn. I find it more likely, instead, that the dragons simply taught Ysgramor the Thu’um, like the Greybeards did Ulfric Stormcloak.

The idea that Paarthurnax put the scales on the shrine is interesting. If he flew there one night, it might explain why Sissel thinks she's seen him in her dreams. Also, we do know he has left the Throat of the World on rare occasions before. According to him, he used to visit Numinex in Dragonsreach from time to time.

Ive got some interesting little details that might interest you
    1. I dont know if this is a well known fact. But in the companions, you could ask Athis the reason why he join the companion, he would then say the lines from Indiana jones. HOWEVER, should you ask him again he would mock the player for being too annoying, he will actually notice that the dragonborn ask the same question twice, which he says "to get away from people who ask the same questions twice" or somewhere along that line
    2. After joining up with the companions, fighting with vilkas in the yard. You could talk to kodlak and he will say the word "eyes on the horizon" what's interesting is during the quest proving honor. A contradicting statement is muttered by Farkas on dustman cairn "eyes on the prey, not the horizon" this is a little nod to Farkas wolfish personality and Kodlak's wisdom where he see fit that Sovngarde would be his home.
    3. You could stumble upon Kodlak and Torvar talking about which weapon they like to use. Kodlak said that in his younger years he likes to use a bigger weapon but now he have a hard time lifting a greatsword, which then he says he still love to bludgeon someone with a hammer. Well if you check out the living quarters on his room would be a steel warhammer. It doesnt end there, when you return from gathering glenmoril witches head Kodlak will die while holding the same steel warhammer. The conversation from Torvar foreshadows how Kodlaks fighting years are behind him (too frail to wield a warhammer) and he will not survive the companions questline.
    Hope you take notice.

I realized something about the fourth fact regarding the dragon scales at the Akatosh shrine. Nate mentioned that Paarthurnax is the only dragon that's been around since the dragons disappeared, and therefore is the most likely candidate for the source of those scales. However, that would mean risking exposing his existence by flying to that open spot close to a settlement - Rorikstead. Well, may I remind, that we *do* have an instance of someone in Rorikstead mentioning Paarthurnax, albeit vaguely. Sissel - one of Lemkil's daughters - mentions she had a dream of an old and gray dragon who "wasn't scary". Perhaps it's possible that Paarthurnax *did* risk a trip to the shrine at least a little bit before the game takes place, and Sissel managed to see him during the night, although believing that it was just a dream.

From what I understand; many innocent lives were slaughtered in Sarthaal. Many men, women, and children; many noncombatants dying at the end of a sword. Ysgramor wanted the Snow Elves to know the pain of the Nords. The problem was; the Snow Elves were an empire. They weren't familiar with the concept of feeling defenseless like the people of Sarthaal. For the Snow Elves to know the pain felt by Sarthaal, Ysgramor sought to treat them as they treated Sarthaal; slaughter all without any mercy. It's a very simple concept, really; and befits the very logic of a true Nord.

Although, the true genius was to embed hints at a still never-observed female version of that ultimate get-out-of-jail-free card who fills in all the plot holes we haven't even thought of yet but could potentially arise if anyone examines the lore too closely.

Could it be possible that denying or being denied their nature (that of conquerors and rulers) somehow changed them? Why do no other dragons seem to age? I get that Alduin had to raise most of them from the dead, but literally none of them look old.

With regards to Saarthal and whether Ysgramor was a dragon priest. My personal dragon theory - I think the Nords were sent to Skyrim by their dragon masters to find and secure the artifact known as the Eye of Magnus (Dragons could probably sense it's Aedric power naturally similar to the way that wizard knew of it using the oculury), under the pretense that they were just settlers to keep the snow elves off their backs. When the snow elves realized what the Nords had found they attacked out of panic of such a powerful dangerous artifact being misused or because coveted it for themselves. Ysgramor escaped and reported to the Dragons about the Eye and then was sent back with a big army along with Dragon's to genocide the elves. The Nords retook Saarthal but the Dragons could probably recognize the Eye as an Artifact of another Aedra (Magnus) and thus a potential threat to them or all of Mundus perhaps. So they buried its existence and commanded it to be hidden away.

My theory for the dragon scales being at the akatosh shrine is that they are from the warriors you see fighting dragons during the sequence shown from the elder scroll of how they sealed alduin. That means they had been held onto for generations and even placed at that shrine when it was first erected many years in the past long forgotten by all but the scroll and parthunax

Now, Parthuurnax's horn is interesting indeed... I have noticed he is missing that part, but I always assumed that he was missing it as a result from a battle before the alligance with Jurgen and the founding of the way of the voice. I mean... It is stated a lot in the lore how the dragons existed long before the humans. And also about the shrine in Rorikstead - if you speak to Sissel, one of the children in the town, she mention that she have had dreams about a dragon. This fact can give a lot of speculations and theories going. :) And the ninth dragon preist mask "Kohnariik" can strengthen the theory about Ysgramor being a dragon priest, it does translate into "warlord" but we really have nothing that suggests that. I gave this a little thought as I watched this video. :)
