Deadhead Roses for More Flowers
Vložit

- Deadheading is a simple pruning technique to help cleanup your roses after a flush of blooms - removing those spent flowers also encourages the shrub to return to flowering sooner. In this video, I'll show you how to deadhead individual blooms as well as cluster-flowering roses. A bit later on in the video, I show discuss how to deadhead and stage your perennials - also in an effort to reduce the "pause" after blooming.

Yep straight no chaser👍🏼
Thank you so much!!!!!!
Same, I’m renting a home with two rose bushes in the front yard and this was definitely helpful
Yessss
Yes!! I bought a home with gorgeous, mature rose bushes, but I have been flying blind takinh care of them... til now!! 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🥀🌹💐
No self promotion, no-self aggrandizing but straight to the point. I love it! Thanks Jason for yet another very informative and simple to understand video 🙏
Thank you so much for your straight forward video.🌸🍃🌷
Most informative video.thanks for sharing

Thanks
What types of pruners are you using for deadheading? Your videos are the best! Learnt so much.
How fate led me to you is something I will be ever grateful for. New (to us) home has 2 shrub roses planted 20 years ago, and after watching your detailed video it is clear why I got zero second blooms last year. 😂
Learned so much in so little time. Will deadhead far better this year. Thank you from your new subscriber.
Best luck with your gardening this year!
We purchased a house with many rose bushes. I’ve gardened all my life, but not had roses and knew nothing about them. This video was an excellent teaching video to give me confidence that I can properly take care of my new garden.
Best of luck Terry - and I' bet you'll do great. As an experienced gardener, you already know most everything you need to succeed with roses.
You speak at the right pace. Very clear video. You even zoomed in to show me where you made the cut. Very good teacher I give you 10 out of 10.
Yours are about the only videos I find truly helpful! I am a novice rose gardener and most videos start above my head using terms and practises not explained and I'm left frustrated and confused. You're a good and thorough teacher. Much obliged.
So glad I'm hitting the mark for novice gardeners like you. Thanks for the feedback.
Proper deadheading is very important to allow plants to rebloom. This video is a MUST to watch by avid gardeners. Thank you.
It is so nice to hear instruction from someone that is not only highly knowledgeable about the subject of roses, but explains the reasons behind the methods. It certainly clears up some misconceptions and helps to equip a more knowledgeable gardener!
Thanks Debra - I'm so happy you found it useful
Yes, he is good.
So clear and straightforward! Thanks for being so to the point and keeping things short. What a blessing to have found your channel.
Looks like l have been doing it wrong, time to change to your technique an be rewarded with more blooms.
Every days a school day thank you for explaining
“Everyday a school day”. 😊
Thank you so much for this!! I've inherited my Grandmother's home and her 35 year old rose garden🌹 along with it. Growing up in Washington D.C., the yards on our lots within the city are *VERY* small (generally about 6x9 ft or smaller) and in the past it was typical to populate these limited spaces with rose bushes and hydrangeas. Every block becoming its own undulating sea of color during bloom times.. giving us all a great sense of pride in our community.
Sadly, as a kid I paid very little attention to her toilings in the garden and now that it is mine I want to keep it beautiful and healthy, just as she did. Thank you again for all your much needed tips.
It's my pleasure. I'm happy to hear about the gardening culture In DC. I heard one garden expert say (and I'm definitely paraphrasing) that east coast gardeners are "hardcore" compared to west coasters - because they have to work for it!
@@FraserValleyRoseFarm "Hardcore".. Wonderfully put!! You have no idea! A few of my Grandmother's lady friends trim their grass with scissors. YES, thats right, I said scissors ✂️. Again, the yards are very small in some cases and these ladies believe in perfection. So buying a mower for a 4ft yard isn't economical but the perfect 3 in grass length under the roses *will be* achieved at all costs.
My Gram used wood ashes around her rose bushes and she only put it on them at night so none of the neighbors knew her "secret to rich green leaves".. I've now become a part of this wonderful tradition. One I would definitely call "hardcore" or I wouldn't be up this late with roses on my mind! 🤔😆
That's sad. My favorite past time with my grandma was in the garden. Hopefully, if you have kids in your life, you can make that a common activity with them.
Beautiful and hope you have revived her garden and made it yours
How magical that you inherited your Grandma's house and roses!!
Please see a Medium and chat to her. She will be so thrilled to speak to her beloved gal x
just bought a house that has beautiful rose bushes on the side and front yard of the house! I had no idea where to start, this was extremely helpful!
This guy knows what he is doing. Thanks for sharing your knowledge!
'This guy knows what he is doing'. Possibly the best compliment anyone can give to Jason. I heard it first when someone was describing what Oscar Peterson did with a piano.
I have followed this method, and the results are fantastic
My mother instructed me back in the fifties to always remove dead roses at the “five leaf” which I still do today. Thanks to your video I now know that there’s a reason behind it and not just some old family tradition that I follow for no other reason than that it always brings Mom to mind with a smile. Thanks :-)
Thanks - although being reminded of you mom isn't the worst reason to keep up a good garden habit!
Please share "what is five leaf". Is this secret between yourself and Fraser Valley Rose Farm?
Nancy Alywahby when dead heading a rose just look down the stem and you will see some branches of leaves that have just 3 leaves on them and still you will find some little stems or leaf branches that have five leafs on them and this is where you will cut off your dead rose :-) . My mother never told me why to do it that way but it must be right if Frazier Valley says to do it too so I’m glad I took her advice; moms can be pretty wise sometimes!
This guy is great! I’ve learned so much from him- thank you 🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩
2:12 - (Holding up flower) "This is what it looks like when it's fresh. That's Polka...nice ruffled edges of the petals; gorgeous apricot color...[affectionately] so I love this plant in my garden..." (flings flower firmly aside off-camera).
It's not like there won't be more where it came from...
Hi Jason. Don't bother replying. I know you busy. Just wanted to say 'Thank You' for another fantastic informative video. Learnt lots as usual. Take care 😁
You’re by far the best! Clear and straight to the point. I learn so much from your generous information. Thank you 🙏
Your deadheading and pruning technique on roses really wonderful and helped me to understand and care for roses .This video came just in time as I was struggling to care for my fading roses .Thank you very much .
The way he effortlessly twisted and snapped that Rose's neck...

It freed me from years of guilt!🌸
@@GT-us8vc to see ooh h up
Very thorough, easy to understand! I feel much more confident in what I'm doing with how you explained everything. Thank you so much!
This is my first year planting several rose bushes and I didn't like the unsightly shriveled roses after blooming so beautifully and I went around snipping them off. Little did I know, that was the right thing to do! 👍
I've been doing this for years, & they grow back with flowers quickly!👍👍👍
Awsome tip on the leaves being 5 to be still in veg mode . Love the video sir
Do I need to rip off the stem with the 5 leaves on it?
@@georgemanko436 no. Only down to where it grows 5 leaves from top down in flower or blossom
I had topped almost all my roses but had no growth and i did what you said and now my plant is popping
That's what's up 😊
Can you tell me when you topped them off and what type of roses?.im desperate to get more out of my rose bushes. The first rush are always spectacular and then basically nothing the rest of the season..
Concise, to the point, with high quality video so we can actually see. Thanks.
Crystal clear explaining in simple language. Thank you.
Thank you for that clear and straightforward presentation!
If I didn't like you sooo much, I would be too jealous to like you with all those roses and talent! lol Wow, awesome advice on the rose hips. Never noticed leaves, you know everything! I'm on it. Thanks Jason.
Thank you, simple and straight forward.
such a great presentation style and the view is amazing.
Have heard the 5 leaflet mantra before but this is the first time an explanation was given as to why. It is reassuring that I have been deadheading and pruning my other flowering perennials correctly. Thanks. Will be checking out your other videos too.
Thank you so much for explaining so clear how to trim roses!!!! I always heard the 5 leaf method, but it’s the first that made sense!!!
Do u cut below the five leaves or above them?
That was really useful regarding roses.
I learn so much from every one of your posts. This is no exception. You have helped me overcome my gardening “indecision paralysis” in my garden as I apply your lessons. Thank you!
Very easy to understand with clear and the great knowledge , Thank you for your great clip
You rock!
Finally! Someone who lays it out simply and explains all the options.
I'm more confident already about pruning roses, just by watching your video.
Thanks.
Thanks. So happy to hear you found it useful
No nonsense, no unfamiliar jargon just straight simple and to the point.
I'd never heard of deadheading at the five-leaf on roses, before today. So thrilled to have learnt something new! Thank you so much.🌷
Excellent advice! Common sense approach. I also do staging especially of my salvias and Mexican sage as they absolutely take over, but didn’t know that’s what it is called! Thank you, Jason!
Thank you, Jason! I'm always keen to deadhead the roses but was ignorant on the 5-leaf part, so that was helpful & I am a terror for not wanting to cut down a flower if it still has some blooming potential! I feel sorry for the bees who'll show up expecting a feed & be disappointed! But the point about spreading the blooming period is a good one. I shall aim to be braver!
Thank you! The up close shots and the clear descriptions are perfect for a novice like me.
Thank you for this! I'm not very green fingered but was given a red rosebush from my motherinlaw last year. Its just flowered for the first time since I've had it and she passed away this week. Hopefully, now I know this, I can keep it healthy in her memory. RIP June. 🌹❤
I planted Salvia in my garden for the first time this year, and they are all roughly at the same stage as yours. After watching this video, I now know how to prune/deadhead them, too. Nice!
I have roses and always wondered where to cut. Thank you for sharing!
I am a newbie on rose care and thank you for a most helpful tutorial. Very clear instructions with rationale behind your actions.
I can never thank you enough for posting this video! I've watched countless ones where they say a lot of things but don't demonstrate them! So, yes, a huge thanks!
You did a great job keeping things clear & simple-info easy to absorb and just right level of naturall enthusiasm to keep attention to your subject' Thank you
Thanks Laurie. My pleasure.
Thank you for this video. I’ve never deadheaded and was thinking I’d give it a go this year on quite a few of the plants in my garden. So this has been very helpful in calming my fears of doing the wrong thing. Thanks again and stay safe!!!
Thanks - have a great gardening season
You make it fun and clear to learn, thank you 🤩 I deadheaded my roses right away 💐
Thank you for explaining everything so simply and clearly. I'm going to try this on my mother's rose bush, hoping to take it to another level 😁
Well done . You kept it simple .
Thank you so much! This was very well explained!!! I can't wait to see my new roses in about a month!!!! 😃
So glad to hear you liked it. Best luck with your roses
Thank you, didnt know the 5-leaf rule! I love deadheading as often as possible, well worth it .
oh my gosh
how many knowledge we can find.
about all topics.
Thank you guys.
I LOVE this! Such great practical advice.. thank you!! 😊
Excellent. I'm just getting started and this is no-nonsense and to-the-point guidance from a pro.
Excellent. Thank you. Linda from U.K.
Your videos are humble, honest, well-informed, and you can tell you're a jolly reasonable fellow. Lovely stuff.
Thanks Adam!
For the first time in my life I've been able to keep a floribunda type rose alive for more than a few months thanks to some help from friends who know gardening. Your video is very helpful for me now as it continues to bloom and I want to try your pruning techniques to get even more blooms. Thanks so much!
The best rose pruning video I have ever seen. Iv had trouble pruning and have been confused since taking interest in roses. Thank you!
This is new learning for me, thanks for the info !
Very informative. Also, I like the way this guy explains. Also appreciate the gentleness of his tone and voice.
Just discovered your channel, thank you so much for your clear advice! Detailed but simple and clear. Thank you
Thanks Cheryl. I appreciate the feedback.
I have roses and my garden and I didn’t know about the leafs. I think I make a big mistake. Thanks for the video I learn to much
Fantastic video. Straight to the point and well demonstrated.
Thank you professor for this excellent tutorial.
Yes! Best pruning advice from a real old school landscaper, whom learned me more about the craft at work, was indeed, "prune it just a thumbs up the first 5 leaf". Same goes for grafted roses. And other plants. I think I'm also gonna experiment with this on the Buddleya davidii. They can also bloom twice. Hydrangea macrophylla, won't bloom twice, because it only blooms on biennial wood. So you only prune the dead flowers. Except for hydrangea macrophylla 'Annabelle'. Annabelle blooms on annual wood and it endures agressive pruning each year. Sometimes, the more agressive the pruning, the bigger the flowers get. The only thing that misses in this video is that you have to watch for flowers on annual wood and flowers on biennial wood. Like this guy says, you're gonna have to experiment for yourself. Excellent video.
Thanks 😊 It's a great video 👍 I got a very good information.
I really love roses, now i bought some and planning to have more in my garden
I hope to watch more of you videos, to have more inspiration to grown my own roses
We recently bought a home that had been part of our local garden tour. After removing a truckload of overgrowth we finally have a better grasp on what we have. I'm glad I stumbled on to this video as I recently replaced some large bare areas with different rose bushes. Now to learn about all the other things in the yard. I'm either going to learn or as a last resort grass is easy to grow lol.
Learning more after every vlog
Great info

Thanks so much for this. I'm really getting into gardening, due to being home during COVID pandemic. My sister had given me a small rose bush that is flourishing this year! I figured there would be a "right way" to deadhead the blooms; you explained it very well.
Lol me too. I’m currently planting my own veggies.
@@abby0700 Good luck & enjoy!
Mulch the plant generously, talk to it nicely, to keep the roots cool & moist but not wet. Add a little soluble fertiliser to the watering can to help it on its way. You have a lifetime of learning & pleasure ahead of you.
@@theondebray Thank you for the great tips!
I love roses and thank you for your suggestions .
I’m so glad I came across this video. I planted a rose bush in memory of my grandmother and all the other videos are too difficult to follow! I don’t know what 1/4” to 1/2” is or outward inward buds!!! Thank you so much!!! I appreciate you.
Thankyou..i was always wondering where to cut for better flowers...xxx
I always wondered if it was ok to just pull off the rose head. Thanks for clarifying this. I have a climbing rose and it is hard to reach the top!
Every day you learn something. Great video and straight to the point.
Oh I love you scenery!
I literally said.."wow, oh wow"" when I watched this. Great video, thank you so much for this!
My pleasure Michelle. I'm so happy you found it useful
Brilliant video, just what I needed very informative👍🏼
Omg how fun learning this.. I have a number of foliage indoor plants and now I have a couple of flowering ones including roses. I'm going to try this! So grateful for getting to learn this from this guy. 🙏🏽🙏🏽
Thanks!
Wow so glad I checked in. I was going to cut just under the cluster! Thank you!
Super informative. Thank you!
I honestly didnt know that about the rose leaves , thank you ,

You are awesome. There is something special about you 🇯🇲🇯🇲🇯🇲🇯🇲
Thank you so much!! I have been cutting the dead rose off, not down to the five leaf mark. Going to go try it!
Nice. Thanks for watching.
İs nice but yöu talk to müch
Another very useful video. I deadhead most of my flowers to extend bloom time or at least make the area tidier. Like the tip about cutting flowers back early for time to recover and give fresh growth before a garden event. Thanks!
The only reason I wouldn’t deadhead a rose is if it is near the end of the summer and it produces good rosehips for feeding the wildlife.🐧
Thanks - and good point. You definitely have to consider the lost hips (even as ornamental value) as one of the costs of deadheading.
True, rosehips can be an attractive red or orange color for winter interest. Also I heard that rosehips provided Vitamin C for the people of Great Britain during World War II. 🙂🌹
@@botanicaltreasures2408 Hi wow I live in England and I never knew that fact, I will share that on my new gardening app I found for UK. Thanks for that interesting fact. Take care 😁
Natalie Dodson, Yes, I found that fact about rosehips and its role in proper nutrition during a time of need so inspiring. I got that information from the TV series Homefires about the role of the Women’s Institute in World War II. I think rosehips were also mentioned in the book Jambusters that the series was based on. 🍓
You saved our roses. Very easy to understand and follow. Thanks
A new fan ! Simply put and concise
You are fantastic! Your explanations are thorough, present good science-“Rose Rationale” e.g. the “hormonal effects setting & affecting blooms make such good common- Rose 🌹 sense.

I’m going out in 15 minutes to dead-head my 1 beautiful climber & a gorgeous Apricot Tea Rose (wish I knew its official name, but I got this rose as a birthday gift 10 years ago from my twin sister. She didn’t know its name.)
Oh well, I’m just glad I found your channel. I’m learning so much. Thanks.
Thanks Deni - happy to help!
I totally cut/stage my flowers, sometimes a good cutting down/off is the only way to go. Thickens the whole new blooms.
I do that twist the tops off glad to know I’m not the only one thanks for the fast way with pruning shears
This is the most understandable video on the topic I have scene. I'm excited to get out to my rose bushes to apply this knowledge.
“When you’re dealing with a cluster fffflowering rose”
I need to stop swearing as much.
What can I do with black spot on the lives of roses?
Your job is the best!
Thanks. I spoke on the topic here: czcams.com/video/ulx5GyaHAZg/video.html
Great explanation and visual demonstration. Exactly what I wanted to know, thanks so much!
I’m just so grateful for this video. Learned so much; leaf, leaflet, deadhead etc! I’m more confident to care for my 🌹 roses!
I have been taught to cut back my mums and asters by 1/3 - 1/4 , depending on how much growth they’ve had, twice... 1st time appx Memorial Day and 2nd time 4th July. This prevents them from getting too leggy and floppy, encourages fuller plant with strong stems and helps time blooms. We’ve all seen mum in full bloom in August and totally spent by end of Sept so no beautiful Fall colors when Fall actually arrives. What are your feelings on this??
Thanks Kathleen - great recommendations for staging blooms.
