Sony a7III Color Grading Issues : Testing Picture Profiles Cine2 , Cine4 , HLG2 , SLog2

  • So there are a small number of PIP/Picture Profiles on the Sony a7III (NINE!). I used to be a Canon shooter, then I switched to Panasonic, and now I have (finally) switched to Sony and am a part of the full-frame game. I'm struggling. Skin tones are tough, grading is challenging, and the IBIS is so-so, but I still love it! Sony a7SIII is something to take a look at for sure.
Sony has 9 PIP/Picture Profiles, and I only focused on a select few for this test. The PIPs include Cine2, Cine4, HLG2, SLog2, and No PIP/Straight out of camera. I did not use LUTs, but a couple grades were intentionally heavy so that I can see if the colors hold or the banding creeps in.
I like the look of Slog2, and I find myself turning to it more often than not, but it requires some work and time (both of which are sparse when this isn't my day job).
Anyhow, this is a test and probably boring to most, but I wanted to get a look at the profiles and how they look when put through the CZcams compression ringer.

Best thing create the final image from the camera ( where it does not need any grading at end ) yes it takes some time , but its worth it .

Like the pro color idea, smaller color space with Cine2 or Slog2 (prefer Still but itg709) and then color space transform in Davinci Resolve (Free version) for Slog2 with 709 color space. Caleb, DSLR video, suggested this in a skin grading video. The image is more saturated (Normal) out of the camera, back of the screen, and more in line with Cine2 but with a nicer Slog2 roll-off. Basically, the files have sufficient and balanced saturation out of the camera, so less need to correct the 8-bit file. Note, I don't have HLG (older A6500).
Also, newer releases of Davinci (Free version) kind of manages most of the color issue using a "color space transform" which allows a non-destructive adjustment of the gamma curve and color space. Makes Slog2 correction fairly painless. REF: Jared Undone for an explanation. Always love to hear your thoughts and thank you for the video.

Go check out DSLR Video Shooter last video. He has an SLOG2 profile that might help you.
For me, because I'm quite lazy lol, I use the Leeming Luts

I got a a6400 and filmed on an overcast day and I found the greens too bright and other colors just too fake. I hope to get time to try PP4. I want something acceptable straight out of the camera. What do you think? In your vid it is indoors and color is slightly flat, how is it outside in sun or when overcast?
    Thanks!

It seems to be that you can really get most profiles to work (outside of maybe Slog3 due to it being 8-bit). I like the Cine profiles quite a bit bc they seem to require less work than Slog profiles. I think I could have done quite a bit better with the lighting setup, but overall, I tend to lean more towards slog or cine. I know there’s a few CZcamsrs that rely heavily on Cine4, so I definitely think it’s worth it. I would love to check out your finished work!

Set the camera up where its brighter then what you want the finished look to be
( then you are lowering the noise at the end )
Somehow you are doing the reverse .
( starting with dull image then trying to boost it bright at the end , but this means amplifying the noise and breaking the image apart )
Start off with the image too bright in viewfinder ( whiteish) then lower it until its just brighter than you need for the finished version, then in color grading just lower the brightness .

Love it! I'll give it a go. This was a quick and dirty test, but I am working on getting down which profile gets me to the closest final result. I think it may be Cine4, but I was playing with several just to give it a whirl. I definitely appreciate the feedback and will continue trying to get it right. This is also my first go with a Sony, as I've always historically shot with Canon or Panasonic (APS or MFT). I'm loving it so far, but the profiles can be a bit overwhelming.

Color grading does not mean getting drastic different image then what you shoot .
The goal should be to get it come out of camera mostly finished
( possibly F1.4 lens to get bright enough with black backdrop )
    Then aputure 120d or equivalent
Its crazy to start image too dark then want to boost it in post , there's no reason to ever do this .

Cine 2 looked best! Your awkwardness is funny in a good way 😅

Thank you! I’m soooo awkward, and I would much prefer to not be on camera. Thank you for watching and the feedback! 😊

    what do you say about HLG-2 + 709 ?

    • @thedronetravelers
      @thedronetravelers  Před 2 lety

I liked HLG but never quite knew how to shoot with it. I have since upgraded to the Sony a7SIII, and I only shoot in Slog3 or S-Cinetone at this point. I've heard wonderful things about HLG, though, and shot on a drone using HLG, but the lighting was much better than this. Thanks for asking!

color grading and applying luts, is not the same processes

I dont understand why you trying to get a final image that looks so drastically different than what you begin with .
Why not just adjust your camera to give you the final image ( then maybe just a tiny touch up at the end) ?

John Jacquard, great point! I’m mostly having fun just trying to work with different profiles but you’re 100% correct. I’m trying to get to a point where it’s mostly right in camera and only subtle tweaks are made. Thank you for the feedback, sincerely!

Nobody in comment section understands color grading. The whole point is not to make it look normal rather artistic and bring out emotion
