- The Quartermaster "A" School at Great Lakes, Illinois, is designed to provide Sailors with the basic technical knowledge and skills required to accomplish and perform quartermaster (QM) duties to include quartermaster of the watch aboard ships underway, in port and at anchor. The QM "A" School includes both classroom and practical lab instruction, covering terrestrial navigation, celestial navigation, the Voyage Management System (VMS), and Rules of the Nautical Road.
The QM "A" School curriculum has been modernized through the Ready Relevant Learning (RRL) initiative to improve individual Sailor performance and enhance fleet readiness by leveraging training technology that ranges from simple visual demonstration tools to more complex, immersive simulators and virtual trainers.
RRL delivers the right training at the right time in a Sailor’s career, in the right way, so that Sailors are ready to operate their equipment and fulfill their rating requirements, transforming them into highly skilled, operational and combat-ready warfighters.

Interesting. I am a retired QM. Looks like training has come a long way since the 1960s.
We used traditional navigation tools such as the sextant, along with Omega, Loran-C, and SATNAV. They refer to SATNAV as GPS today. Out of my four years of service, all but 1 month of it was "haze gray, and underway". I was a teenager fresh out of H.S. when I enlisted. I recommend the navy for anyone who wants to travel to broaden their horizon, and education. Joining the Navy was one of the best decisions I ever made. And , No, I am not a Navy recruiter!

When I went to Qmaster school in Newport ri we learned to use loran does the navy still use loran

What kind of careers does this transition to?
You can become a cruise ship captain, that kinda stuff
Getting on a tug boat crew and work up to a pilot.
As a QM you'll see a lot of pilots and even raise a lot of flags to indicate that guy is on board.
QM often become pilots which are usually 6figure income
As an actual Quartermaster First Class! Absolutely nothing!!

@@anon1842 Some people go for a third mate's license straight out of the Navy. You get credit for your rating and sea time when you enter Seaman school in pursuit of a license.
