During World War 2, women had to take on more work to support their families while the men were overseas fighting. One woman, in particular, made her way over to Georgia from Alabama to find work. As fate would have it, her work and her life would end up becoming legendarily in the small town of Rome, Ga.

Grew up in Rome. "Peggy's" was a name mentioned by my southern religious with mom in a whispered naughty smile. So many tales.

They didn't just decide to put a hospital for wounded war vets out in West Rome. They put the war vets out there because the facilities were already there, in that it was a hospital for tuberculosis long before the war broke out. Yes, Dr. Battey was quite a pioneer in ovarian cancer. So much so that while he was allowed to perform what was thought to be one of the first, if not the first, hysterectomies upon a prominent lady in the community in her living room, a lynch party waited outside for him, just outside the home near Clocktower Hill in the event the operation didn't go so well. I've been a resident of Floyd County all of my life, but after receiving my own medical education, I travel far away from Floyd County and Rome for my own medical care and that of my family. The only practitioners noteworthy in Rome now are a limited number of cardiologist & a very small number of internists, with one pediatrician. Peggy's is a well known of anyone over 40 and those who have grandparents who lived here as well. No matter how many times the house is painted (it was blue when I was a kid), we all know which one was Peggy's. 😂

Most people don't recall how boarding houses were used. There weren't as many apartment buildings or hotels as now so this was a way to have lodging and meals without buying furnishings, but also it was a way to travel and live alone in a place where you didn't have family. Just look at how many young people, women especially, that go missing out of cities each year. This was a way to have some security and support for people moving into the area that didn't already have a support system. It also was a way for people to stay in their home and 'rent' out rooms for income. They had rules, but for the most part they were reasonable, just as you would have rules for anyone staying an extended time in your home. Really like your channel and the stories you bring to life.

That house is now the famous Claremont house where they filmed some of the series of Stranger thing’s! I lived here my whole life. Still here!

My dad used to tell me stories about her, her pink Cadillac and about the girls, it was one of his great aunt based off his stories and From what the family says Ga isn’t the only place she had one of these houses at. I was told she has a secret one in Florida and when she thought the law was on to her she’d load them up drive to the ga line let them walk across and would bring them and house them in Rome. Honestly I believe one of her siblings ran it. I loved learning stuff about her and was so excited to find this video!!!

She even had a taxi style service to transport the vets if I’m not mistaken.

I've been to Rome Georgia. I was small girl yet a lot of my entire family on my Great Grandmothers family are from all over towns of Georgia as well as the Carolinas. I loved this story. Because let's face it sex has been around since time began. Well we had this Lady who was dearly loved in our little town. She drove a big Cadillac and had the cutest little white poodle. She was a white woman. Yet she loved everyone. As for me. I was raised by very conservative parents and was sheltered so much. It was ridiculous. We had a Farm as well as both of. My parents worked outside of home. My Dad worked for P&G the later of his career. Yet his earlier years he worked for LEO as did my entire family. My Uncle was the Chief of Police. My Dad was was a rank whatever that was under him. Yet both had an easy going way about them. It is nothing like many LEO act today. My Dads Motto was exactly what was on his Patrol Car. To Protect and to Serve. Sadly most younger men do not have the same values. I think many go Into this profession. In order to be respected yet it's not that way. In order to gain respect from someone you have to give respect to someone. Yet sadly so many Officers now when they pin on that Badge and that Uniform. They get this God complex just as many Doctors,Lawyers, along side of others in Churches, Politics. They are not choosing this profession to help anyone. They go I to it to be able to belittle others and I've been told by a wayward Officer in the past that me was God. I laughed and said you have got to be as wacky as they come. So please remove your self from My property and go back to whatever you were doing. As I was a bit annoyed. I could not stop my mouth from telling him to go get a cuppa of coffee and a donut. He was not impressed. Not was I. As he was not at my home or property by us calling. He was at he wrong house. So back to my friend. Who was known as a Lady of the Night? She had the. Biggest heart of almost anyone I've ever known. She had been to School to be a PT for physical therapist. Was very good at it. She loved her patients yet the pay sucked. So she went back to School to become a Cosmetologist. I was in the same class. We became fast friends. I was pregnant. She was a Mother had 2 children a Son and Daughter. Her Son died in a horrible way.she was like a Mother Hen to me. I admit as a young wife and even my going to School was hurting us financially. Because I had been working up until School started so she became to me as a Godmother type.if she Liked or Loved you others beware she was not a woman you wanted to be on her backside. She would buy my lunch. Snacks. Because I was going thru really bad pregnancy. Our plans was we wanted to wait for 5 years before we started a family. However this child's birth was destined to be. Because I was on 3 different types of birth control. It had been 2 years so Altho we wanted to wait a few years to be more financially stable. Yet we were in love and we both felt it was meant to be. Well I had stop going to School due to I had the same type of condition many women suffer. It’s a long medical term but it means you stay sick 24/7. Many times having to go get IV fluids. It was tough but both of us made it thru this crisis. So fast forward 10 yrs. The man I was so In love with. He decided after us being together all that time he didn’t want to be married anymore. So I was devastated. In our family divorce was not an option. However after all was disclosed my family gave me their blessing and still loved my husband. He was after all our child’s Father. So we made a promise before we wed that bars, excessive drinking was a no go. He could have a few beer or a drink at home yet we made a vow to never go to any bars. So when all was said and done. There is nothing to due in our small little town we had 1 walk in and 1 Drive in Theater no bowling alleys. We did have a roller rink. So unless you wanted to drive to the nearest City Tallahassee. The only places you could go was to a bar. As we are known for Hotels,Motels, Bars Restaurants and Gas Stations. That’s it. So I was dragged by my best friend and her husband as well as a few cousins to go out to a few bars. We had several hot places that had live bands, dancing and I loved to sing and dance. So the Lady I became such good friends with she bartended as well she was not a lazy woman. She loved people. I was all down on myself and so I poured out my heart to her and she gave me the latest stats of how many times my ex came their. She liked him ok until he did what he did to me and our child. So one night before the band set up. We were chatting I had a Shirley temple. Felt so strange and if she was not working I would not even go in. I was 25. She said Sweetie I just want to tell, you this. Your ex is as stupid a man as they come. He is in here from Thursday thru Saturday . Because they were closed in the City ordinance in the City limits no bar could open or serve alcohol on a Sunday. Yet we had a big nice bar outside the city limits. Which could open .So he was there. So as we talked about my finances and me not knowing how I was going to make ends met. I worked a job at a Salon as we as Kmart. Raising a 4 yr old. With no money from his Dad yes it was Court ordered 25 dollars a week. Yet he still could not help. She said it’s all these little hussys he is buying drinks for and being here all the time. She said I have debated on having this talk with you. For a very long time. Yet today is the day. I said ok. She said have you looked in the mirror today. I thought omg my mascara must be all under my eyes. Yes I was so naïve and not used to being in a place or situation in which I found myself in. After she assured me no my mascara was fine everything was fine. Yet she told me I was a very beautiful young woman. I of course blushed and told her your so kind and I appreciate you trying to cheer me up. Well she got mad. She went and got my arm dragged me over to a big mirror In that bar and said tell me what you see. I said a woman who's husband longer loves her. So he turned to m best friend who was also married. She said Wrong answer she was even more upset and when she got this was she would curse like a sailor. She wanted to throttle me. She said you are a beautiful exquisite petite young woman who takes the time to Your 5’4 inches tall blue eyes and medium shoulder length blonde a pretty smile and a damn sure awesome personality. Due you see this?? I said no Mam. She said due you know how I at my age has a nice car, lots of everything from crystal glass wear,China, jewelry out the butt. Due you think I got everything I have from working this job. No I have Clients who are Doctors,Lawyers,Judges. Who lives not here but close enough who are always giving me gifts. I stupidly ask in exchange somewhat.i was surprised because she sat me right back on the barstool in the Lounge. She said that yes some she did have sex with. Yet many she didn't. What her clients wanted was someone who would allow them to speak about their day and their fears. Someone who cared. Not just always speaking about his bridge club or their cruises. The money they spent. She explained how the people she met had been her friends and she felt a family connection. She told me to think really hard and if I decided to go ahead she would due everything as well as setting it up at her home. She would be my chaperone. Well I decided to not go that route. Yet I had a deep appreciation for her and we stayed friends until, she passed. I miss her as well as the whole town. She never hid from what she did. So when you told this story it caused a flashbacks of that hurtful time of my life. She every told the truth and that my friends is what so many w,don’t understand we all have things because it’s life. So thanks Brice for sharing. Love ad Light. Suzanne. 🧚‍♂️🧚‍♂️.

Dolly was a devotee of Sri Ramana Maharishi. She had photos of this beautiful being in her home. As told to me by someone who knew her. She also reportedly shared that she was NOT a fan of Christianity.
