Wow, this really resonated with me and many puzzle pieces have now fallen in their respective place. I found out yesterday that I am Balanta/Brassa on my father’s side. Thanks for teaching!
Have you thought about legally adding your batana name? If you haven’t already. Uche is really my middle name my Mom told me if I ever went to Nigeria ppl would only call me by my middle name.
Peace brother Arasa Malik. Is it common knowledge amongst all Brassa back home that the deeper meaning of Arasa is “Anger of the Lion” and that the lion is their totem?
Arasa Malik cool. I know the bull is sacred to them. In a lot of rites ceremonies men will wear bull mask/headdress. I never knew about the lion. I have a book on the Balanta that’s written in all Portuguese. I’m using the google translate app to scan and translate it into English. Once I’m done, I’ll save it as a pdf and send you a copy if you’d like. I’m trying to find any and all information on the Balanta. Appreciate your videos.
@@sparrow3401 That would be nsumande mbebaba. The bull helmet is worn by the young Nhaiyeh age-grade. It represents the rash immaturity of Balanta youth. The sacredness of the bull is also from our pastoralist culture from our time in the Sahel and Nile Valley.
Arasa Malik thank you for that information! I can express in words how much I appreciate it. I’ve been on the hunt for information on my people since I took my African Ancestry test back in 2009. And I’ve had so many other things happen to confirm that, even beyond the test, I’m Balanta to the core lol! This means a lot to me. Faiyeh!!!

Yes, in time.
Hey brother. I was just wondering if you can talk about your cosmogram logo. Also is the cosmogram part of Balanta culture?

I don't know if it is "common knowledge". But this information was told to me by a Lante Ndang from Guinea-Bissau.
