  • In this video, my daughter and I will clean and repair a 12-volt electric Power Wheels Jeep we found in a heavy trash pile on the curb. She has amassed a good collection of these ride-on toys this way, all found in people's heavy trash piles. In this video she'll show how to clean them up, check the motors for continuity, and convert the battery terminal leads to accept universal spade terminals. Then she'll show us how one is NOT supposed to be driven.

    A neighbor on my area just left an old one here, and the cleaning crew gave it to us. It's been out in the rain for a month. I have no charger. I don't even see a brand indicator. The hood does not lift. I'm hoping i can fix it for my kiddo.

    SWEET! I was trying to find out if you can use whatever battery you want instead of a PowerWheels Proprietary battery, or if you can charge the proprietary battery with a Walmart charger as long as I "fix" the connectors. Recently scored several sealed 12Volt batteries for these types of toys so THANKS!!!

    IF you ever need any help modfiedpowerwheels is the place to go! Not smart spraying it down with water with gearboxes and motors still in. Another thing to Add if you find a trashed power wheels and the motor and gearbox are good the first thing you should do is clean the Gearbox. SUPER EASY. If the lube inside is old and dirty it can cause the motors to draw a higher current and can cause diminished power and higher amp draw which could cause the fuse to blow and cause shorter battery life. All you do is pop the stock caps off the axle pull the wheels off and remove the motors and gearbox as one (Cut the wire in the middle so you can resplice it or if you can solider just put new wire to the motors) Then all you need to do is remove 4 screws (if itsa #7 GB like on all these 2000s model jeeps) and pup some clips as well as the two flat head screws that hold the motor to the box. Open it up remove the gears and clean the big chunks of lube and all the lube you can get by hand. Then soak it overnight in a dish soap water combo. Next day clean it again and you can use Q Tips to get into the small areas you couldn't get other wise. Let it dry completely. Set it out in the sun or if you brave you could pop it into the oven at the lowest temp setting(not recommended IMO because it could weaken the plastic, but some people do it ) Once its dry lube up the metal rods the gears go on and throw all the gear back in. lube the gears up and spin the gears to make sure it spreads good and make sure if your gonna put extra put it on top of the gears. This way when it heats up the lube will flow down. On the gear that connects to the motor pinion put a nice dab of grease on it. Dont need to put a lot just enough. Put the gearbox together and put the motor back in and screw it all back together. As for lube I used White Lithium Grease. You can use your choice just make sure it is safe for plastic and that you got all the old grease/lube out. combining different kinds of grease can cause a reaction and damage the gearbox. If you ever need any help with power wheels just get in contact with me or head over to the site I told you about earlier, it has a wealth of knowledge from many experts that know way more then me.

      Oh and for the stock caps that keeps the wheels on, once you take them off you wont be able to put them back. Its no problem, just go to your local hardware store and get some 1/2 inch shaft collars. In my area Lowes-Home Depot did not carry them but Ace did. You can also order them off amazon.

    Also you should not be running it without a fuse! There could be a short and the wires will get hot and start to melt and this could cause it to short. If your using an aftermarket battery run an inline fuse holder paired with a 30/40 amp fuse (price for the fuses and fuse holder is like less then 6 bucks at any auto store) or even better by a resetable 30/40 amp circuit breaker.

    You know if you take a few sheet metal screws, the kind with the big knobby heads on them, and drive them into the drive wheels that thing will get a lot better grip in the dirt & grass. I did that for a friend's kid since he couldn't get it to move when the grass was wet. I just used the tread pattern for spacing them out evenly. They act like studs on snow tires though and it worked pretty well.

    Are the motors water proof?

    • @TheGuitologist
      @TheGuitologist  Před 7 lety +1

      I'd say they are water resilient. You can get them wet without causing any issues. They are DC motors. The windings are lacquer coated, I'm sure, so there's little chance of shorting. I see the purpose of your question though, you want to know if you can wash them safely in the vehicle. Yes. I've washed several of these Power Wheels with the motors left in and drowned them.

    • @TheGuitologist
      @TheGuitologist  Před 3 lety +1

      To check the continuity of a circuit, get a battery and a flashlight bulb, and a couple pieces of wire. Connect the bulb and the thing you're testing in series. If the bulb lights up, the circuit is continuous. If not, it isn't continuous.

    Just because you have continuity at the motors does not mean they are good. Got to think these Jeeps were made in the early 2000s and some are 15 years old. These motors can still work but because of the age they can draw higher amp currents and blow even 40 amp fuses. ITs no problem though, you can get a pair of duratrax 550 motors (one of the best motors at 6-12 volts, but nothing higher or they burn up) and then just get the correct pinon and put it on the motor shaft and your good to go
