  • In this video we build a wooden mallet, a tool that I'm looking forward to using as I start learning how to cut Dovetails. This how to video walks you through the simple process of building a mallet, step by step, as well as showing you some of the problems and issues that you may have to face, and how to overcome them.

I have been doing, and watching woodworking for 5 years now and I never saw the gaffers tape trick - nice work man. Added to my list to make!

The gaff tape trick is awesome!!!!! I never thought to do that. I know gaff tape is expensive, but I do have a lot of it because I work in theater, and that is the tape of choice for that business. Thank you for this life changing tip

Thank you for posting this! I have been wanting to make a mallet but was just kind of chicken for some reason. You have made it seem totally doable.
    Nice work!
I do have to say though.... you really should have done kind of backer block behind the handle when you are cutting the slots for the wedges. That would keep it from kicking back and keep you much safer. Just my thought.

You are correct. I’m actually going to be building a mortising jig soon.

Awesome mallet! Almost had a heart attack watching your table saw use. Please anchor your table saw so it doesn't move when you cut and consider making crosscut sled or jig for stability. Freehanded sculpting with a table saw (or using it to cut something tall like that) is quite likely to lead to accident. Thintz12 has a must watch kickback video that also covers how kickback can pull your hand into the blade that you might benefit from seeing. Fast forward to 2:30 for the good bits.
Shop injuries are bad for video timelines. So far, I've seen a Katz Moses injury and Stumpy Nubs injury video. Those guys are pretty amazing woodworkers. It can happen to anyone.

Gaffers tape is expensive...I used duct tape, because we know, duct tape fixes everything!!! Again, job well done, brother!

Great job. That looks really nice. I would like to make one for my shop. Might there be a drawing that includes the dimensions? I really like how your mallet is proportioned. Any way, I will subscribe and hit the bell and watch more videos as I anxiously await some Idea of final dimensions. Stay safe.

I'm really sure you can build it yourself. I did this 2 weeks ago thanks to the Woodglut plans.
