- So, should he be in the Hall of Fame? 503 goals is a lot.

His two goals against Canada in QF and then another two goals including the famous golden goal in final in 2002 are what forever changed his status to hockey GOD in eyes of slovaks
Peter Bondra was one of the poster boys for the term "Lightning in a bottle"..... Absolute speed machine with a crazy beautiful arsenal of shots.... Really loved watching him play
Fun fact: All three 500-goal scorers from Slovakia played at some point for the Chicago Blackhawks : Stan Mikita, Marián Hossa and Peter Bondra
Stanislav Guoth 😉
Stan Mikita’s donuts
@Gray Leigh if only he were healthy
@Gray Leigh He was unfortunatelly injured really often which didnt helped him there - he would reach it
I feel Bondra could make it in eventually. It's not just NHL play that factors in, international play helps. A gold and a bronze along with the 500 goal mark is impressive.
To me 500 goals should be viewed just like 500 Home Runs. It should guarantee you a spot in the Hall of Fame.
@@suikodensenpai41 ah yes, semantics from someone who doesn't even use their own name.
He is our national hero we Slovaks know why.🇸🇰🥇
Žigo poď na ľavo máš Bondru... Tyčka, góóól, dávame gól
@@miropele1024 Tie najkrajšie momenty nášho hokeja.
The fact that the Capitals haven’t retired his number yet is a travesty
It was said for years by ownership that they wouldn't retire numbers until we won a Cup. Well...still no 37 and 12 in the rafters.
@@BarrowsBOY Beaupre or Chara?? LOL, just kidding. It is a shame. Why Friesen was allowed to wear number 12 in 05 is mind boggling. They could at least low key retire the number, if they aren't going to officially do it.
So as a kid growing up in DC, Bondra was my favorite player. I still remember my mom waking me up for school and telling me he'd been traded to Ottawa. Many tears were shed that morning!
I grew up in Maryland and also loved Bondra. Still have my Bonsai jersey. Was very sad when we traded him.
BBBOOOOOONZAAAIIIII. His was the first hockey jockey I ever bought. Much love for him.
You bought a Peter Bondra jockstrap? You must be a big fan!
That fewest points among all players who reached 500 goals is an interesting stat.
hes the opposite of adam oates
@@artursfilipovs4923Oates, Bondra, Jagr, and Gonchar on that power play was just too good
@@fiftyin07big facts it was wild people don’t even know.
I'm happy to see you cover Bondra! I was just 6 back in 2002 when he scored the GWG against Russia, it was a magical tournament for Slovakia. I was far too young to realize how much it meant at the time, but I still remember watching the games with my mom...anazing memories :)
Nice to see it wasn't just me. My first ever Jersey was a caps Peter Bondra jersey. That tournament was my first exposure to hockey and I remember the semi finals shootout like it was yesterday. Because of that tournament and Jan Lasak I decided I wanted to be a goalie and it quite litterly changed my life. One of the best memories of my childhood is watching the 2002 championship.
Bondra never got the attention that Federov, Selanne, Bure, and others received. A great of The Dead Puck Era and a gunner.
As a Caps fan, I proudly have a Bondra Blue "Weagle" jersey with his autograph. I know that the current Capitals teams are the best in team history. But Bondra is one of the reasons I have been a Capitals fan for over 30 years.
Bondra lives a few miles from Annapolis, MD and is the head of The Capitals alumni.
Next up-the career of Olaf Kolzig-Olie The Goalie!!
PS-It's Brooks LIKE.....
He regularly had 20-30 more goals than any of his teammates. He led the league in SHG over a 10 season span and was 2nd overall in goals during that time.
Bondra was my favorite Caps player other than Ollie the Goalie! I love the blue jersey. Thanks for doing a video on him because I think he’s under-appreciated by non-Caps fans. I wish he got a Cup during his Caps career.
I still remember that 98 Cup Final- going in as a Wings fan, I had a kind of loathing for Bondra, mixed with a healthy fear of what he might turn on at all the right moments. But as I got older I realized that was just respect for a through and through classy player. (Not too dissimilar to how I feel about Sakic.) Apart from game 4 that was a much more deceptively close series than people realize on paper, and Bondra kept it that way
@@alexanderjakel8001 The Caps were definitely outmanned by that Red Wings team. But if they weren't going to win, I would have liked to see them win 1 game. Stevie Y was great. But I really think Olie the Goalie should have gotten the Conn Smythe. Without him, they're out in the first round against Boston. Olie would have gotten more love if they didn't blow the lead in game 2.
@@sdgakatbk haha that was my equivalent of the handshake line... Outmanning by a superior team notwithstanding, Kolzig and Bondra were f*ckin great.
He was fastest skater on two All-Star game occasions (1997 and 1999). I recall that once or twice he was also a runner-up for the hardest shot competition. He indeed had very hard shot and much more accurate than Chara, or MacInnis, especially notable during PP.
Worth noting is that Bondra also holds NHL record for most goals scored in one period by one player in NHL (4) and these are the fastest 4 goals in NHL history by one skater (4 minutes and 12 seconds).
Al Iafrate had a vicious slap shot. I can't imagine blocking shots that guy was taking.
Extremely underrated player, Bondra was one of the best players Washington had during the 90s! As a Sens fan it's often forgotten he had stint there!
Underrated player with a great career. I always remember Bondra as a senator as my first NHL game as a kid was NHL 05 which he was a senator on
I liked a lot of the late 90s Caps including Bondra. I was excited when he came to Atlanta as short lived as it was.
Better late than never. Thank you, Shannon, for finally creating and posting this long overdue video of one of my hockey heroes (behind Beaupre and Carey) from my childhood and adolescent years growing up as a Caps fan. Proud owner of Bondra's game worn 94/95 road red jersey from his league leading goal scoring season, a season which he should have won actual hardware had it been created at the time. His historic 5-goal game came on my 12th birthday - 2/5/94 - forever linking me to this legendary DC sports figure, his game worn home white jersey of which is a jersey grail I need in order to complete the full Bondra game worn jersey set. Hopefully one day, Leonsis will get it right and retire #12 to the rafters, in addition to a rightfully earned and deserved nod into the Hockey Hall of Fae where he rightfully belongs. #Bonzai
I would love to see Bonzai get in. I was at a game against Roy and the Avalanche where he scored a hat trick. I tried to throw my Sharks ballcap onto the ice. I also had a great seat at the game against Tampa where he scored 5 goals. At this game, coach Opie had fairly recently taken the reigns from Terry Murray and eventually got the team in the playoffs.
I remember the years with Pivonka centering Bondra. There was one game where Pivonka was first star and they interviewed Michal after the game. They asked him about one of his goals where he trailed and picked up a rebound of a Bondra shot and put it in with the goalie on the ice. It went something like, "Well Peter skated in on a breakaway but couldn't put it so I had to follow and score. I don't know. Peter is supposed to be a goal scorer."
My favorite player growing up, such a beauty! I remember going to my local card shop to go and see if they had new Bondra cards every weekend. Hope he makes the HOF!
Red Wings fan here. Always loved watching Bondra play. Love these career breakdowns you do!
I remember seeing Bondra in the stands at a rink that I was playing at when I was a kid playing peewee and wanting to go ask for his autograph, but I knew he was trying to watch his kid play so I figured I'd not ask. Had to be around 2003.
Maurice Richard and Peter Bondra are the only members of the NHL 500+ goals club who didn’t get 1000 points.
My day is made!! Peter was a great scorer, a bit streaky at times, but a lot of scorers are, right? He is also a really nice guy too, which is rare for hockey players, I know
Maybe it's rare for American players..... But generally I've found most are absolute sweetheart human beings....
@@jordangraff2254 Yeah, bit of a sarcastic joke, but of all the players I've met over the years, Peter is the nicest, which, to me, is saying something, like you said most hockey players are such good people.
Great scorer, when I think of Bondra I think of goals and nose patches. Very impressive to put up 40-50 goals per year during that era, up there with Selanne, Bure and Jagr. I don't think Bondra will get into HoF, there are just too many great players ahead in that waiting line.
Great point about the Rocket Richard trophy. Having 2 of them might have put him over the edge for Hall of Fame. Amazing international career too. Great video!
I've never been so happy to click on a hockey history video. I met Peter Bondra when I was a little kid and he was so happy to see that kids knew who he was.
As a long time Capitals fan I want Bondras number 12 retired by the team before Kolzigs or Holtbys numbers. Watching guys like Dale Hunter, Al Iafrate and Peter Bondra are among my earliest memories of watching the NHL. It is truly a shame that team didn't get to hoist the Cup in 98.
I would live to have seen Bondra play with Ovi! That would of been sick. I forgot he also played for The Thrashers
The number 1 scorer among Slovakian players was Stan Mikita (though he moved to Canada as a child).
I feel like on almost any other team Bondra would’ve been a HOF’er for sure. He played on some stale offensive units and still averaged 40 goals a season over his career.
Bondra led the NHL in goals twice, but the Richard trophy didn't exist at the time. He was a great goalscorer in all situations (including a shorthanded threat). He scored the GWG that clinched the WCH gold in 2002 for Slovakia. He led the tournament with 7 goals the year Slovakia won gold.
As a Sens fan, I remember Brooks Laich, was sad to see him go but was one of the reasons I watched more Washington games. If I remember correctly his name is pronounced like the word like.
This was a nice treat. Thank you!
Second most goals of the Dead Puck Era behind Jagr. One of the scariest players of the era. He should be in the Hall.
how is he not already in the hall, wtf
Yesssss, great player pick for a career video. Excellent work as usual, Shannon!
As a Finn, I have endless respect for Bondra leading Slovaks to international successes through many defeats.
He definitely belongs to NHL hall of fame. With his humility, work ethic, great pesrsonality and his attitude of wishing the best to everyone, he deserves it. And he is probably the only 500 goals scorer who is not in HOF, which is a shame. 500 goals??? C’mon…it deserves to be there💪
Considering where he was picked and along with his international accolades it's an easy yes to him in the HoF
Nice video!always had a soft spot for him because of how he was in the video games lol
NHL 95!! I loved that game!! I would always trade and bring Al Iafrate back to the Caps so I could try to hurt people with his slap shot.
Afternoon from the ATL area
Thanks again man!
When they create an award they should give it symbolicly at the least to those who would have won it!!!
Been waiting for this one for a while
Bondra was my favorite Capital before Ovi came into the league. (Kolzig is up there too and probably Pivonka). Was always fun watching him from about 94 to 98. Adam Oates was a great addition to the team.
He was my favorite Caps player. Ollie the goalie was 2nd
Remember back in 94, i was 12 years old, he played 2 games for my city Kosice, basically a team he played for before the NHL. My father wanted to take me to a game, and he told me to not be affraid, because theres gonna be a lot of people. Boy oh boy, there were hordes of people there, on parking lot, on roads, everywhere, like if they were waiting for pope to show up. Lots of people end up dissapointed, because they couldnt get the ticket that night, including me. That was in 94, at the beginning of his NHL carreer, he is an absolute legend in Slovakia.
Thank you so much!

Bondra was my favorite player growing up, watching the him in world championships was electric! He's the first reason I'm a caps fan!
Thank you for doing Bondra
Career video/Teppo Numminen
I enjoy the career of vids. 👍❤️
I also think you should do an Atlanta Thrashers vid on anything you like. Use a big magnet, or a few, best jersey they have and a hat. 🙂
Great video (as are all of yours). Grew up a Caps fan and love Bondra. Only thing: those jerseys didn’t come around until his sixth season.
Yep, Bondra came to the Caps in 91, Screaming Eagles were introduced in 95.
Excellent breakdown of Bondra and why you could make an argument both for and against him in the HOF
All three of The Washington Capitals all-time leading scorers from different eras scored more goals than they had assists: Gartner, Bondra, and Ovechkin.
One of my fave players
Of the 46 members of the NHL 500+ goals club, only 2 of them didn't accumulate 1000 points - Maurice Richard (966 points), Peter Bondra (892 points).

I know that it's not your fault but as a Caps fan hearing Laich's name being mispronounced hurt me a little.
I realized after, apologies.
@@TheHockeyGuy no need to apologize, love your work
How should it be pronounced?
@@SverigeiSverige Brooks "Like". The H is silent .
Was looking for this comment lol. It’s a tricky name for sure
It's weird to think that if he had made 9-10 assists more per season, he would be in the HoF
Interesting Fact; Bondra is the only eligible player who has lead the NHL in goals multiple seasons but is not in the Hall of Fame. Just based on that I hope he gets in some day.
If he was Canadian he is in a long time ago
Peter Bondra scored 5 goals in one game against the Tampa Bay Lightning in 1994.
Peter Bondra faced his Washington Capitals predecessor Mike Gartner for fastest skater during the 1996 NHL All-Star Skills Competition. Gartner won.
Would be nice to do Palfy as well as a underrated player who was very injury prone.
For much of his career with Washington, they didn't have anyone else near his level of goal scoring. He was a very good fit with the Caps and I don't see that he had more goals than assists a negative taking that into account. Btw, it reminds me of another Cap that has more goals than assists. Alex Ovech-something.
Hey THG for these career videos could the header where it lists draft number also have the player’s DOB and birthplace/country? Just a thought if it’s not too much trouble.
would you be able to do a career video on either Jason Allison or Marc Savard if you haven't already?
Peter bondra one of my favorites.
Yes He should be there
I think Bondra should absolutely be in the Hall. It's a crime he isn't yet (and the Caps haven't retired his jersey).
"Silverware" is a pretty common term, in the UK, for trophies and awards.
I think Bondra and Nolan type players are the Phil Kessels and Matt Duchenes and Paul Stastnys of the day. Solid, some standout seasons, but never quite reached that highest level.
Bondra scored a goal on Theodore back in the day and the Habs reporter tried to blame it on Jose. As Bondra got into the Canadiens zone, Peter shot a lazer beam top corner, right side, as he was coming from the left side.
You should do a career video of the fellow Slovak, Robert Svehla. :)
He was a lethal goal scorer. HOF to me.
I feel like he should be a Hall of Famer. He was one of my favorites to watch growing up.
TNT announced there staff of commentators and analysts, would be cool to hear your thoughts on all the hires, and if you think TNT will do a good job
My pop called him a Sabre killer 🏒🎯
Peter has my vote for the Hall and the Capitals need to retire *#12* ASAP
It's a crime he isn't in the HOF and that the Caps haven't retired #12 yet. He was by far their best goal scorer in his time there, so he didn't have much opportunities for assists.
Have you done a video on Olaf Kolzig? He's the reason I became a Caps fan. His Godzilla mask intrigued the five-year old me.
I think so, I think anyone who scored 500 should get your foot in to the hall.
He's gonna be in the HOF someday but he's gonna wait a while
Any excuse to show off Thrashers swag is perfectly understandable and acceptable
I think he should be there, no question. 500 goals isn't the easiest thing to accomplish. 43rd all time in goals? Shouldn't even be a question
By the way, I really love these career videos! :)
I had an NHL computer game as a kid with a world championship feature. For some reason you could trade players between the international teams. I was always trying to put players on the country of their birth, although for some countries I eventually ran out of room. I always put Bondra on Ukraine.
Happy birthday Peter Bondra!
Bondra was great for a while, but is suffocated today because of ovie. Make a video please about thoughts of Ovechkin’s next five years. He has to be really good to catch Gretzky within that timespan because of age.
Loved him in nhl94
I know he was on the tail end of his career but i liked him in ottawa and was sad he didnt stick it out
Great name
Like Joe Sakic, Bondra is in my top 10 all time favourite players. As a Leaf fan, most of my top 10 aren't Leafs.
Still waiting on Dave Andreychuk's career video.
Hey small correction, Bondra is not the #1 goal scorer among slovak players, #1 is Stan Mikita (canadian/slovak) 541 goals, #2 is Marian Hossa 525 goals and Peter Bondra is #3 with 503 goals!
Is it just me or was that silverware mini spin-off hilarious?
Yes!!!!! Bonzi
Yes, glad that he gets a career of video.
Perhaps the NHL could retrospectively award a pseudo trophy in such categories as the Rocket Richard which are based on stats rather than peer evaluation. Even just to add bonus points in HOF consideration. Any player with 1000 games, 500 goals and multiple 50 goal season is decent regardless of hardware/ cup wins.
If Guy Carbonneau got in, then Peter Bondra should be in easy.
