  • Crazy Tube Circuit Hi Power
    In this video we'll look at the Hi Power from Crazy Tube Circuits. This dual pedal captures the sound of a loud Hiwatt stack, with tons of headroom and the true feel of playing a tube amp. The pedal also feature an impressive take on the classic Coloursound Power Boost allowing you to drive the Hiwatt section into creamy overdrive and fuzz. The Hi Power can be used as an overdrive driving the front end of your tube amp, an EQ and as a platform for your pedals.

    That was epic. Love the Shine On intro and was giving heavy Wembley vibes, which is my favorite concert and tone, I would say. However, on the last jam when adding the Muff, when you did that classic Gilmour A to B bend on 2 on the G string, I would say that was ironically one of your best moments on your channel in terms of tone, even if when using the Laney. So that combo was insane and the pedal sounds great. I would say this video is therefore Hiwatt approved.

    This company's so good! :O I hope the next release will be a Mesa/Boogie Mark style amp in a pedal plus a Boss HM-2/Muff to be able to recreate Gilmour's Live In Venice/DSOT tones. My favourite Gilmour tone EVER!! I actually hope Gilmour used a Boogie as an "expensive overdrive" again for his new solo album, but I doubt it. I really miss that particular Boogie flavour in his tone nowadays. I'm also in love with his Division Bell tour sound, but his live sound on the AMLOR tour's always gonna be my absolute favourite! I've never ever heard a Mesa/Boogie in a pedal that sounded like the actual amp (even not the pedals Mesa put out themselves), but since CTC did such an amazing job on this Hi-Power pedal, I think they can actually pull it off and I hope they will, somewhere in the future. Great video, Bjorn! :)

  • @custompedalboards
    @custompedalboards Před 5 měsíci +2

    Hi Bjorn, Just got a couple of these for me n shuanie. great pedal. as you know we have loads of vintage Hiwatts, 50's, 100's, 200's, heads, combos, cabs etc between us and we found this pedal to be a really good representation. the only thing that could be an improvement as you say is having 2 gain knobs, one for the brill and one for the normal channels for the link setting to work properly, as this IS part of Hiwatt sound. The Hiwatt side of the pedal I found to be too bright on anything other than the normal setting. The link setting would be so much more usable if there were seperate gain knobs. But other than that a really nice pedal, great review as usual!

    • @gilmourishofficial
      @gilmourishofficial  Před 5 měsíci +2

      Absolutely! It really captures the sound and feel. The linked channel worked nicely on the Lionheart that I used for this clip as it is a fairly dark amp but yes it’s bright and separate volume controls would definitely add to the experience. I also found that the bass control really didn’t do much unless it’s cranked all the way. It would be cool too to have a switch for the placement of the Power Boost when you add pedals in the send/return.

    I have an "entry-level" HiWatt, T20/10 head, and while iit may not be a handwired P2P Reeves-build, it is voiced really well and sounds & feels pretty darn close to a vintage/custom series HiWatt, and it reacts to pedals like a HiWatt should. I also use a Devtech Power Driver 18v (Coloursound Power Booster type) and what I'm hearing in this video sounds a lot like my Power Driver into my HiWatt T20/10 - and the Rat & Muff tones were really authentic when played through the Hi Power pedal into the Lionheart. Really nice work, Björn!!

    • @gilmourishofficial
      @gilmourishofficial  Před 5 měsíci

      Thank you! The Alembic is a preamp based around a Fender Dual Showman, which has a lot of headroom and a fairly scooped frequency. David mainly use it with a Rotary speaker so although it's an important pre-amp and EQ for the rotary I wouldn't say that it's a must for his overall tones.

    Hey Bjorn; greetings! Before I rant on, I’ve just checked out the Fleeting Glimpse EP and I think it’s brilliant. I loved a lot of Airbag and your previous solo stuff too. I find it interesting that while a million bands claim to be inspired by PF, none come anywhere near them sonically ( Steven Wilson touches on it at times, and OK Computer is possibly the closest thing to a “ next generation “ Floyd IMO. Anyways, a question for you mate: I'm chasing an ampless Gilmour(ish) sound in my small apartment. It's very hard to find an amp sim pedal that does the Hiwatt thing. I currently have a UA Dream as my pedal amp but I've realised (also after reading your amp advice) that it's too thin and mid-scooped to be a great platform for that sound. My question is, would I be better off getting a pedal that does a British Plexi-style sim(more like a Hiwatt) or instead buying the Hi Power and running it into my Dream pedal? Love to know your thoughts if you read this!
    Val,
    Australia

    • @gilmourishofficial
      @gilmourishofficial  Před 2 dny +1

      Thanks for your kind words Val! The Hi Power isn't a preamp. More a conventional overdrive unit made to capture the tone of a Hiwatt. It won't work that well with just a computer. Assuming that's what you're looking for.
      I haven't tried the Dream but given that it's based on the 65 Fender Reverb, I would imagine that it doesn't quite capture the fullness of a British style amp.
      There are other options as well, like a multi effect unit - there are several brands and models out there - or a software/plugin for your DAW. I'm using Amplitube and I'm very happy with it although for certain stuff. Line 6 also has a lot of great stuff.

    So does the Laney Lionheart kind of looses it's character, the pedal's preamp section taking the "control" of the overall sound ?
    Do you think the Lionheart 20w would be better overall than the 5w for bedroom situations, since it has a Master Volume ?
    Because I 'm looking for an amp also capable of live rigs..
    I used to have a Mesa Boogie F30 30 watts, with a very good master volume, that was very nice at bedroom volumes.. I'm not saying whisper loud, more than that.
    I think you sound very very good in your demos with Laney.. and you are an excellent player, so technique and feel comes to play of course. when mastering volume control.
    I've tried a few Fender amp from the 68 Custom line, and they all had problems, and didn't sound that good to be honest.
    So the Lionheart 20w combo is really on my radar..

      @@rodolpheponthus2948I wonder the same as I own a Jcm 2550 ( a jubilee but with black toilet). In any case, I just ordered this pedal to see how it sounds on my clean channel in conjunction with other pedals such a fuzz face, given a fuzz on its own on a clean channel sounds terrible IMO

      I haven't tried that but I would imagine it does. The amp section should be set clean as I've shown in the video - you might do some tweaks for your setup - and it should be able to handle most pedals.

    Is this designed to be run into an amp (like a DRRI or Marshall) or into a cab sim? Or both? Not sure I understand the intention of the HiWatt side.

    • @gilmourishofficial
      @gilmourishofficial  Před 4 měsíci

      It's basically an overdrive pedal voiced like a Hiwatt + a Power Boost so it should be plugged straight into a clean amp.

    Do you consider the Hiwatt side of the Hi Power a always on pedal to run your overdrives and fuzzes into or do you prefer them straight into Laney?
    I'm trying to decide if I want to sell my Hiwatt T20 and purchase this pedal to use with my Marshall Origin 20c. I would really like to hear everyones thoughts. Thanks

    • @gilmourishofficial
      @gilmourishofficial  Před 3 měsíci +1

      I use it as an always on platform. I haven’t tried it with Marshall but it goes better with say my Laney Lionheart and Fender Amps as they’re further from sounding like a Hiwatt. I would imagine that you would need to use very different settings on the pedal paired with a Marshall to compensate for the huge midrange you get from both.

    • @guitarguy7859
      @guitarguy7859 Před 3 měsíci

      Do think this pedal would pair well with the Laney Cub 12? Since the cub is voiced similar to a Hiwatt or early Marshall, I wondering if there would be the same midrange issue.
      I also own a Fender Blues jr III with the Jensen speaker. Maybe this is a better match for this pedal.
      I really like what I am hearing in the pedal demos and I would like to reduce the number of amps I own. However, selling my Hiwatt T20 is hard decision.

    I'm confused. At 7m 6s the camera pans across your amp and it says "Actual Settings". Does this mean that you plugged your guitar into the Hi Power and then into the amp's INPUT JACK? These preamp pedals are meant to be plugged directly into the PWR AMP IN or Effects Return jacks. Plugging a preamp into another preamp totally defeats the purpose. Did you try bypassing the Laney's preamp section first and just didn't like it?

    • @gilmourishofficial
      @gilmourishofficial  Před 5 měsíci

      The HiPower is, as explained in the video, an overdrive with a Hiwatt character. This is not a preamp. More details on the Crazy Tube website.

    Hi Bjorn, great demo. I found the Motherload very interesting! While I'm not a fan of that Hi Power. I'd prefer having the amp alone. Although again for how things are going, probably something with power amp section and cab emulation would have been more appropriate.
    But as always, everyone has their needs!
    Cheers

    • @gilmourishofficial
      @gilmourishofficial  Před 5 měsíci +5

      Thanks! Yes, the Motherload is well worth checking out. The Hi Power will never replace a real Hiwatt or Tube amp but it is a powerful platform if that's the tone you're looking for and don't want to bust the bank. I travel a lot and don't always get to play Hiwatts, which I also prefer with my band, so I can definitely see my self using this as a platform going into the amp, knowing I get some familiar tones. And, I don't like digital processors so there you have it.
