Just a short note of things that can help buildings to look more interesting aka a personalised summary:
-add bump-outs
-make your roofing look interesting
-raise your foundation even if it's just by 1!
-make a floor plan before adding windows etc.
-simple columns at the corners of your home
-if you're house is looking boring, try to add "logical" landscaping. sometimes it has to be a big amount of plants, stones etc.
-brown terrain paint around the house and underneath the plants will make your buildings look way more alive!
Also, don't try to be too realistic. Real life buildings would look terrible in the Sims most of the time.
Most important note if you're trying to build:
MAKE SURE YOU ARE SAVING YOUR PROGRESS EVERY FEW MINUTES!!
To add to the last point, if your game freezes and you haven't saved, don't start clicking all over the place. That would only make it crash. Leave it, let it rest and in 80% of the time it will fix itself in 2-3 minutes, 5 max. Patience is a virtue!
@@bear.b yes, great additional comment :)
YES!!!!
Agree a lot on realistic stuff, I try replicating real life houses that just look awful in game
The new kit came with a fizzy rug that is bedroom-sized. It made me so happy because I also size up the City Living rug all the time as well as the one from Snowy Escape.
ITS SUCH A GOOD RUG
omfg im obsessed w the city living rug
Iâm not a beginner to the sims, but Iâm so bad at building đ
Same, Iâm on my fourth generation of my family and I only just built a house I didnât steal from another sim or took from the library/gallery
I wish this video would have existed at the time I was a pre-teen Sims 4 player but I really think that this video will help many viewers who haven't been interested in building before or didn't know where to start. Really nice video:)
This video is great (especially for beginners). I think it would be great if you would do videos about more complex build features in the future because I really can see people trying to learn step by step from videos like this one.
I really hope my comments can boost the algorithm at some point, much love^^
Iâm an avid builder and I learned something from this!! The landscaping before the foundation tip.
The only thing about sizing down specifically indoor plants is the shadows donât change size. Iâm not sure why this is but it drives me insane so I donât ever resize the indoor plants.
Solid video. Learned how to go through swatches without placing the item (might not be able to do it because I'm not talented at hitting 2 things at once on purpose - great at doing it by accident).I wish I had known the roof tricks when starting out.
Some tips for console players:
(The controls might be slightly different on PlayStation, but I think they're roughly in the same place.)
To drag the eaves on just one side, click on it with both A and X, drag it in or out, then release both buttons at the same time. It can be quite temperamental, but keep trying, it should work eventually. (You may want to scream because of how long it might take for it to work.)
To alt place, press RB whilst clicking on an object. This will cycle you through full tile, half tile and free snapping to the grid.
To size up or down an object, LB and RB and click on the left and right buttons on the D-pad. Similarly, to raise or lower an object, press the up and down buttons.
Hotkeys:
Press Y on an object to copy it. Click on it then press Y to sell it.
Use X to change the swatch.
To remove the grid, hold down the left toggle.
One of the things that eluded me for a long time until I watch a tips and tricks video was using the shift key when placing an object. Almost everyone in my households paints and if you select an easel in build/buy and place it you get one. If you hit shift while placing you can put another one down without having to go back and select it. So for things that don't auto place like counters holding shift gives you a similar result. Thanks for taking the time to make the video. I played for over a year before trying to build anything because I thought it was too difficult. The game architects really have given a great set of building tools. I love it now.
I didn't know about auto window placement till you mentioned it in a recent video.
* has heard/read every building tip* still watching and commenting to support Taylor ^^
I wish The Sims 4 would show approximate room size. I think we had it in Sims 1 and I found it helpful to keep my room sizes more realistic. Thanks for the tips, they were very helpful!
I do all of these and my builds still turn out atrocious. Maybe I just suck.
Subtle saucers are great kitchen lighting
I've just started trying to build a house and I'm so grateful you made this video - I didn't realise there was so much to know!
I knew some of these things already, but still learned some stuff. Never knew how to clutter counters, so thanks for that!
I never knew about the window tool to add windows and I been playing Sims 4 since day 1. lol Good building tips :)
I was just reading your description, and I donât know that you run ultimate sims guides!! That website has helped me so much with different cheats and stuff, so thank you!
Thatâs awesome!!! Iâm so glad
She does the Ultimate Sims guide?
@@candy11401 yes, Taylor's handle used to be the ultimate sims guide. I think she changed it last year.
@@hduquette1 thank you đ
even as an advanced builder as i mainly build in sims have been since sims begun i pickedc up a few cool tricks here so thank you so much for this! you can never stop learning!
Taylor, youâre a lifesaver! I never wines how to use cheats on console, in fact, I didnât think they were available!
Really good beginner video! As someone very interested in interior design, building in The Sims 4 is always fun for me, but I love watching videos and tips for inspiration. The Sims 4 and real life are different. as you mentioned, so I love getting inspiration from you! Your videos are top notch!
I needed this bc I'm not rlly a builder in TS4 bc my builds turn out sucky.
I never new we could cycle through the swatches thank you! :)
I'm glad u covered roofs cuz I can build n decorate but I suck at roofs so ty
Loving your videos. I have always hated building in sims games but recently got Sims 4 for my son and I to play together. Suddenly something clicked and I love to try to build now. Loving the tips.
Your videos are always so helpful and so informative. Your warm energetic spirit really goes so far. I learned a lot from this video and i've been playing since release.
Hey taylor, im loving your content, you seem to always make me smile, thank you!
a roofing tip that has saved my life is that you should almost always copy your existing roof and then make it smaller/bigger or shorter/longer to make sure it's the same height (if it is the same type of roof)
most of the time it's way easier than trying to raise or lower the height to the same ankle your already existing roof has:)
ps: it's a tip to the viewers and not to you taylor. your buildings are awesome!!
Packing to go to a convention next week and I will be doing so much building in the hotel room, thanks for the ideas (and refreshing some tips)!
Brilliant video Taylor, thank you. I found some really good tips here that I didn't know. Also, thank you for the subtitles. You really know how to take care of your subscribers.
Okay, I've been playing the Sims since the first game. I've been playing Sims 4 since the day it came out. And I had no idea you could DO WINDOWS BY ROOM. THIS IS GAME-CHANGING. Thank you.
I think the exterior and roofing tips will help me a lot teehee
Omg thank you so much for this! Iâve been playing sims for a long time. I use to love building on sims 3 but I never do it for the sims 4 because I found it very difficult. Definitely going to put these tips to use!đđ
I love this channel
I been playing the Sims since the first game and I have never been the greatest builder, but after 22 years of playing this game I am determined to change that lol thank you for the video â€
Thanks for the help I really needed it đđâ€ïž
Thanks for the helpful video! I'm one of those kind of people who thinks I'm a good builder in the Sims 4, and I learned something new! I didn't know how to shuffle through swatches with the + key, without using the design tool. I will decorate so much faster now! I would love to see a progression of building tips videos from you!
I have been playing The Sims 4 since it came out and I'm surprised of how many thing I didn't know! This video was super inspiring and helpful. Thank you so much, I will make the tiniest cutest plants ever!đ
One I love to do is down size a counter to place a coffee pot on and use bb move to place it exactly where I want it on the counter. Still functional too.
hello taylor, i haven't long seen your engagement video and i just wanted to wish you and your partner a very happy future, sending my love! Congratulations x
this was fun to watch!! I'm learning from a pro!!!
I havent played sims since sims 2 and im getting the itch to play again. Your videos are so helpful
2:25 seconds.. It took... 2:25 seconds to change my life.. Sincerely a humbled person. â€â€
You are going to get REALLY big one day I just know it! đ
I learned quite a bit from this video! I'd be interested in more advanced tips too đ
THE PLUS SIGN!! Thank you SO MUCH!!
I love this video I feel like I need to get better with building because I feel like my house are so basic so I love this video so much and I should try putting more clutter in my house
People plant flowers and grow trees in their yard that aren't necessarily matching of their neighborhood. A lot of them here don't "match" every other house which is a good thing if you ask me.
This helped so much
Very nice thanks, and yes me too i get anoied if its dark to đđčđđ»
Thanks so much for all the great tips! You saved my crappy buildsđ
Beginner here, thanks for this video! I have realized I don't know where to begin with building from scratch and this helps a lot. I used to just make families in the first sims game just to build their homes, then abandon them. The game has come so far since those days!
Great stuff, thanks
I literally avoid building bc I was such a builder in Sims 3 but the Sims 4 build seemed so hard to me. I'm gonna try out a lot of these I didn't even know existed. Thanks Taylor!
New most of these but learned about the auto windows thx
I love your camera movements.. How do you switch between viewpoints seemlessly?
This is awesome
I suck at building, but when I do build and I donât like the way it looks because itâs basic I look at some stuff about the Sim and customize the house towards that. It makes the sim feel more real.
Tysm this was really helpful (even tho im a console player)
I donât really have anything interesting to say except to thank you for the tips (they were really helpful!), I just commented to make the comments 69
To do the roof thing on console you hold square đ

Hey Taylor I would just like to congratulate you on your engagement I hope you have a very special wedding with your partner and enjoy the rest of your life together lots of love â€ïžâ€ïž
How do I get my windows to show shadows on the ground when the walls are down? Mine doesnât do this
Why do my white colour walls and furniture not look white like yours? I have tried brightening my computer screen and adding more lights in the house and still not great.

I built an entire 2 storey house for my character Josh and his husband Travis, Iâve put some paintings around but Iâm definitely not happy with the house being soâŠEmpty? I used most of my cash on the decorations that the second floor is empty lool
She's so sweet
adding dirt is something you should obviously only do if you're building something in the sims haha
The cycling through swatches tip doesnât work for me all it does it zoom in
Don't place it down after u grab it -- Hold it, then click through the colors in the little colors box (on that object) with the + key on your number pad, using the Designer Tool. Then you place it down, when done choosing.
a building would never have the change to look even slightly good if you wouldn't be adding roof trims to your roofs
istg im the only simmer that doesnt care how dark it is or the only one that can actually see...
Does the queen heart or reply? :(
