  • Samhain is almost upon us. Here I am baking a traditional Samhain Barmbreac Loaf and talking about the traditions around it. The recipe for the loaf is below. Samhain is a wonderful, magical time of year, for taking stock, planning for the future and feasting with family and friends at the last harvest.

The recipe for the Barmbreac is as follows:
    1lb Plain flour
1lb fruit mix - currants and sultanas
    5-6oz sugar depending on preference
    2-3oz butter
Spices I used were Mixed Spice, Nutmeg, Cloves and Cinnamon
    1 cup of strong tea
a good measure of Whiskey (optional)
    1 grated apple
    1 tsp Baking Powder
    1tsp salt
    1 egg - beaten
    Directions:
Grease and line a 2lb loaf tin
Measure out fruit and sugar into a bowl and add the strong tea and whiskey if using. (A glass of ale or Guinness could be used as an alternative.)
Sift flour and spices, baking powder and salt together. Rub in the butter.
Fold in the flour to the fruit and sugar and mix well.
    Fold in the egg.
When all mixed, pour into the loaf tin and bake in a moderate oven on a middle shelf. 180 degreesF/375 degrees C or Gas 4-5 for one hour and then check and bake for a further 15 to 30 mins until skewer test shows it is cooked. Enjoy with fresh butter or butter and jam.
May your ancestors bless you and yours this Samhain. Thanks for watching

It's important to have seasonal foods and special dishes. I think in these days when everything is always available year round it turns what was once special and joyful into something ordinary and mundane. Eating seasonally with what is naturally locally available and making season specific dishes I think is much better for the spirit and overall life balance (of course admit it's easier to say when you live in a milder climate and not cold places akin to Siberia!)

It is important and you couldn't have put it better. The homogenisation of food and customs is making the world a very dull place. Seasonal food is so much more tasty as well and when linked to a cultural festival even better xx

I prefer the older traditions and honoring ancestors and appreciation for the turning wheel of the year. I really dislike the Halloween as presented in America. It is a very negative connotation we are teaching children. I suspect this will be the LAST Halloween in America, when the sleepy finally wake up.
Thank you for keeping the ancient traditions alive Terri and Lol! Happy Samhain 🎃.

Thank you for making this today. I've been craving barmbreac for the last two weeks. In moving I misplaced my recipe. I will be baking tonite . I can't wait for it to cure, lol, must have an end piece 10 minutes after coming out of the oven. I feel like writing the recipe on the wall do I don't misplace it again. Happy Samhain and blessings to all ❤

I don't know how I missed this last year but I was thrilled to see it pop up. I still have time to make this for Samhain and I'm surprised it wasn't more complicated. I'm a huge fan of traditions, remembering our family ties and carrying on their ways whenever possible. You inspire me so often. Love and many Blessings to you and your family. Dear Terry, thank you sooo much for your precious and wonderful knowledge! I'll try to prepare this lovely traditional cake with my mom as soon as possible! You know, some weeks ago I helped a friend of mine affected by Covid giving her as a gift the last thyme oxymel bottle I did last year... She loved it and felt a lot all its natural benefits; fortunately now she and her husband are completely recovered!!! Again, thank you so much from the deepest of my heart for sharing your ancient Irish wisdom ☘️💚🌳 All the best for you, your family and beloved ones in this special night ☀️💛⭐ Take care!

Your cake looks wonderful. I would love to taste a piece. I bake my own bread but only an occasional Wacky (cocoa and baking powder) cake. Lately I've just finished cutting and hauling, out of the forest, four cords of firewood, replenishing my stack of wood for the winter. I burn wood to heat this small cabin so that hard work is necessary every year. Lately I started digging all my dozens of dahlias out in the garden for winter storage. Another big job for a man my age. I'm 68 right now. In recent weeks the dahlias have been blooming beautifully and it is always a shame to see them finished. Tonight is Halloween, a quiet time in this village for quite a few years as so much has changed over time. When I was younger I would dress up as the headless horseman, riding my horse through the village. Usually people that would see me would recognize my horse so they would know it was me, so not too frightening. Yesterday a herd of 18 wild turkeys came to visit my yard and today five of my deer friends came to see me while I was working in the garden. It's always a joy to have the wild things come to visit. It seems, with these short days and bright autumn colour, winter can't be too far off now. Seeing you make your cake makes me think I should make something special for this special season. Seeing your dogs play with each other the way they do puts a smile on my face. Thanks for sharing again. Take care and enjoy the remainder of the season. Cheers!

You are only 68!! No age at all! I agree things have changed a lot, so much has been commercialised which is distasteful to me. How lovely to have so many visitors. Our weather is very mild and quite humid until this afternoon when we had a little bit of hail and the dampness makes it feel colder. It is lovely watching animals play and they do bring a lot of joy. xx

Ginger ale is a good substitute,if you could get cane sugar would be better. I did that at New year cake but I washed a Quarter and I put it in foil just for safety reasons and my greedy big sister tore up the cake just to find the coin I was fuming mad and I never did that again, because she seen me do that and asked me why and I explained it, but she had a very bad year that year, served her right. She was a widow and was getting a few checks from her late husband so there was no need for her to do that. I didn't have nothing at the time, and for the record I still don't in ways with my situation, but it is a whole lot better in many ways.

It's as simple as the typical Italian cake that they make, up of mountains where chestnuts trees are, they would use chestnut flour. I like the add of whisky, it must make everything very aromatic. Enjoy the cake and let us know what is in store for you within the year 🧙🔮.

Terri, Just added myself as a subscriber (finally). Greetings from Canada. I watch your videos every week. I plan to make this Brambreac loaf. Definitely a hearty treat, which will further connect me to my Irish heritage. May I make a suggestion? I've been baking since I was a child, and am used to 'greasing' the loaf pan, then lining it with wax paper, prior to adding the mixture. I found by clipping wooden clothes pins at the sides of the pan, (to hold the wax paper in place), would keep my mixture from spilling over the sides of the paper. Of course, remove the pins prior to putting in the oven. This is something I still do. 🫖 This will be a loaf to share over 'tea time'. K.

in New Orleans and the surrounding area they make King Cakes during the Mardi Gra season. Inside the cake is a little plastic baby. The person who gets the baby is said to have good fortune for the year or get pregnant, and if pregnant will deliver a healthy baby. When I lived down there you had to put your order in for a cake at the local baker weeks in advance, if you want a fancy decorated one.

When I was a child my mother would wrap coins in wax paper and insert then into our birthday cakes before frosting them. I never remembered to do this for my son's birthdays. I think the coins were for luck. There may have been other trinkets in the cake as well, I don't recall.

I need to try this! What kind of tea are you using? Black tea or herbs of choice?

I am watching this in August, but your last words reminded me of something I had started to do years back and then I had stopped because of moving and work and busyness of life. This year, I will do a little bonfire and sit beside it and do prayer bundles of gratitude and put them in the fire. Samhain is a good time for reflection. it falls in nicely with the fall feasts in the Jewish calendar. lol. In the Jewish calendar, my ex is Jewish, September is the new year so the shofar is blown, then there is yom kippur which is time for atonement and repentance, then the feast of tabernacles where families camp for about a week outside in remembrance of the flight out of Egypt. Then bring in Samhain to remember and be grateful to those who have gone before you and to reflect on what you want to bring in and let go. love your channel.

I think every culture has their own version of the wheel of the year. All human beings need ritual to help stay connected to their ancestors, to the land, to the seasons...

I rewatched this because I loved making barmbreac as a kid, so I love this video. If you see this comment, could you explain a little about why the church was against meat? Thanks!!

Meat was forbidden during Lent and on Fridays. During Lent because it was a period of fasting leading to Easter. On Fridays because Christ was crucified on Friday and so we should give up something - maybe to be in solidarity??

Hello Terri, I’m wondering is there a part 2 as in late spring I believe you were making a new greenhouse out of an old small building on your property to be cleaned out to replace your poly tunnel. How is that going?

    • @DanusIrishHerbGarden
      @DanusIrishHerbGarden  Před rokem +1

Thanks for asking. The extension to the greenhouse is finished and I just have to repaint it. Will show you that in a week or two. xx
