- Customer approved the hopefully No-Parts-Required repair for the
P0341 - Camshaft Position Performance code.
We need to reset the rear cam chain to advance the INTAKE Camshaft 1 TOOTH.
Book time says this could be a 7-HOUR job where EVERYTHING has to be removed to reset the cam chain. Is there an EASIER shortcut?
Only one way to find out!!

This guy is unmatched! Not only a fabulous diagnostician, he explains things so well. He’s a natural teacher.
Yep! Agreed..His voice is clear precise and understandable..along with the great camera shots..
Gets it from his pops
I'm always amazed by Ivan's method of repairs. No massive Snap-on tool box full of every wrench in the catalog. Just a simple collection of budget hand tools and a sprinkling of improvisation around factory special tools. Great job Ivan!
I buy tools on a "as-needed" basis...haven't bought many tools in the last 7 years or so!
He makes this repair stuff (art ) a true artist in this field ! He really must enjoy what he does.
@@PineHollowAutoDiagnostics But did you count scantools to that? or only those for mechanical purpose ones.
No diss to Ivan but you can do whatever you want whenever you want when working for yourself. Waiting 2 extra days for a specialized tool is no issue. No such luxury as a flat rate tech at a dealership.
@@stephanparis6887 I would strongly disagree. I've worked heavy industrial twice for myself and you'd better be on the spot when you say you will, and you'd better be less expensive than your competitor. Everything is ramped up when you work for yourself. At the dealer or company you can be slow and hide behind the company so on and so forth.
Damned impressive Ivan. Took a little digging but found and corrected. This has to be one of the best auto diagnostic and repair channels on the tube!
Thank you for your support Mr Tony! 🙂
Tony, another site you will find equally interesting is JR( this is a husband/wife Christian &Vera from Germany), what they dont know about Land /Range Rovers is probably zero
Sorry its LR not JR

NO MATTER WHAT MAKE OR MODEL HE GETS, HE CAN FIX IT. IVAN IS ONE OF THE EXTRAORDINARY SKILLED HUMANS ON PLANET EARTH! IVAN USES THE BRAIN FIRST AND THEN HANDS, WHERE AS OTHERS, HANDS FIRST AND BRAIN LATER!
haha if you use your hands before your brain, something will break!
"THIS IS TURNING INTO I DO CARS" One of the most extraordinary repair videos ever. Ever. Ever. Ever.
Amazing repair. Half of the struggle is knowing exactly where the problem is and the other half is having the skills to fix it.
Ivan. Your confidence in undertaking this job is beyond reproach, the background knowledge of engine production is also important and you are obviously are well versed. The customer will be exstatic and you have that satisfaction.
Good thing this was a timing belt 4 banger so fairly easy to work on 👍
If only the Volkswagen dealerships were as honest as you. They would’ve for sure charged the seven hours book time, plus probably threw in a new chain and tensioner and it would’ve been more expensive than the car. I really respect the fact that you seem to care about helping people and saving money, but yet fixing the vehicles correctly.
Probably check times in vcds. or easy check a grow of cylinder pressure DiagnoseDan make this check in 1.2HTP vw engine
@@StopTeoriomSpiskowym This wasn’t a check in any way, it was a full repair without having any of the fancy special tools… Did you watch more than 2 minutes of the video?
@@stevenlatham4397 He get DTC and live data. cam shaft halla signal and signal for crnk shaft are synchronised. @@StopTeoriomSpiskowym I’m not trying to sound rude, I think you’re missing the joke behind my original comment.
Before watching this, i watched i do cars. Then you remove camshafts and its deja vu. One of the more difficult repairs is getting the camshafts timed. It is a very tricky job. Whoever attempted tbis before had it almost perfect but came up short. I love your NOT BY THE BOOK shortcut. Saved big $$$ for the customer.
Exactly one tooth short.
Ivan you are one the the best mechanics in the USA.
The Humble mechanic has to be awfully impressed
He is pretty sharp as well
@@mikefoehr235 Humble + Smart makes for a pretty likeable fellow.
@@myidisinhim559 ✅️

@@mikefoehr235 He is the VW Ivory Tower, the point was. Ivan impressed the VW-god. Also, I van does many brands, so a multi-God-like-Mechanic?
You just know the customer didn't volunteer the info up front because they suspected any repair shop/diagnostic specialist would refuse the work.
Eh but then they know there's a chance of paying for diag and them still turning down the job
The customer is the same kid who installed the engine and tried timing on a previous vehicle. Now he is back.
Owner might of done the work himself (lied) and couldn't figure out why the long crank time after he performed work??
Or not realizing there was a connection between the cam change and the long crank time.
Most small shops in my area won't do timing chain replacements, they'll do timing belts all day long but fear chains. This was a very easy problem to diagnose, it was plainly obvious that it had a timing problem, it was plainly obvious that someone recently replaced the timing belt. Any mechanic with common sense would therefore verify the timing mark alignments. Why refuse the work solely because someone else messed with it? It was verified that other than the timing issue the engine ran fine, IE wasn't damaged.
But we don't know what information the customer gave upfront, it's a more dramatic effect if Ivan doesn't know anything about the timing work upfront...
Ivan don't need no F'n special tools !! Just his special brain.. One of the best out there..
This man is simply The G.O.A.T!
Good evening from Tokyo. Excellent and thorough diagnosis coupled with a time-saving and cost-effective repair. Best of all, “no parts required “! Thanks for sharing Ivan.
Your “give it a go” attitude never ceases to amaze Ivan. Have a great day.👍👍🇺🇸
It's always nice to see someone fix something quicker than how those writing the repair manual explain how they believe it should be done. They never think outside the box and describe alternative ways a repair can be made.
Nicely done, Ivan.
With all the scopes and tools deployed, the culmination of this repair after everyone had their fingers in it was a wrestling match with the cam assembly on piece of cardboard on the garage floor.
The power of editing allowed you omit the explative laden part of reinstalling the cams
I doubt your customers realize how lucky they are to be receiving the quality of service and expertise you offer. Whatever you charge is probably not enough
While I had every confidence in your diagnostics Ivan - still think you had balls of steel removing the camshaft assembles in that manner on a customer vehicle! Brilliant work as usual - I'm having a large G&T in celebration.
Your attention to detail and the way you are able to improvise is incredible, one in a million. Have a blessed Sunday, Ivan!
You have the endless patience needed to work on this German puzzles! Congrats! Once more you showed the brain is our most powerful muscle! Thank you so much Ivan!
Excellent diagnosis and repair! I noticed a little bit of hesitation in your voice when you were wiggling those shafts but you pulled the repair off like a boss. It took some guts to go against the books. Also great ingenuity for the lack of factory tools. I'm impressed again and again by your no nonsense approach to fixing cars.
Wow! You passed the audition on the Passat! Most people would have needed at least three hands to do what you did! Nice work, Ivan!
These are like Audi's. To do the cam belt you don't need to take the front off. Just take out the two bolts near headlights. Unclip the sides of the bumper. Remove a bolt in each chassis leg behind bumper. Screw in a length of threaded bar into each chassis leg and then you just slide out the front on the threaded bar into service position 👍
yup
Very well done, Ivan. Russian repair for the win! Your ingenuity is the best, and no parts required.
After all these years, your ability to adapt and improvise is astonishing... No parts required - No "special" tools required... Regards
That has to be one of the best diagnostic/repair jobs and you didn't have to disassemble the front clip to do the job!
A little scary when those cams and tensioner assembly started to come up in one piece, but it definitely went well!
The known good after repair scope reading proved that. Unless you work on these engines all the time, that good waveform would be difficult to come by unless it's in the service data.
Good one Ivan. Hope the customer's happy.
Given the design, it would have been scarier if the cams and tensioner DIDN'T come up in one piece.
Such phenomenal ingenuity ! No special tools. No parts required. Can't ask for more than that ! I hope your customers appreciate you as much as I do.
That was hard to watch as I was sure something bad was going to happen.. good job
This is why I love your videos, you have the mind of a Rocket Scientist and the ingenuity of a shade tree mechanic. When you don't have the 'right' tools you become MacGyver. I've worked on vehicles for over 60 years and love the way you approach the problems. Please Keep it up!!
Nice repair with no parts required😃
“No check engine light, so the car is happy… But, no brakes”😂😂😂. Small detail Ivan😇
Thank you for sharing
Holy Mary! If I'd have tried that everything would have ended up throwing distance away out in the yard and the neighbors would have had to call the police. That was one heck of a repair. Great job!
Great diagnostic! Most people would have gone straight for the cam sensor and STILL charged the customer for a no fix.
Great job. That tensioning sequence is so convoluted for such a simple process. I would never have conceived something so odd. Very entertaining and informative.
Amazing Ivan, in the wake of adversity and needing all those special tools, you managed to fix it. I probably would have given up once I saw I needed special this and special that.
Great job! So much easier (and quicker) than the official procedure. Thanks for sharing the details.
Ivan you are a legend if I tackled that I’m afraid the engine would become a boat anchor😂👍
German engineers have a fundamental objection to the very concept of an easy way
Very impressive, Ivan! That was quite a high wire act pulling this off. You did what they said couldn't be done in Wolfsburg and I appreciate the before and after waveform comparison at the end. Too bad you didn't have an assistant helping you with the chain resetting, but amazingly you got it in there. Bravo!
Even just someone to hold the camera lol. You are a legend, Ivan. i love your channel best on CZcams. My son is learning some auto electrical in school and i keep showing him your thinking and skills.
Absolutely totally Bad-Assed Capable and unreal effort to figure it all out, DOING CARS WITH NO PARTS NEEDED!!!! The Oener is one lucky person....U R the BEST!
The owner brought it to the right shop. Thank you for taking the time to record & edit.
You never fail to impress me, you make MacGyver look like an amateur! Nice job Ivan!
This PHAD and coffee is becoming a good habit! Good morning, Ivan! Isn't it nice when the customer can tell you what has been done to the vehicle!?
Glad it worked out for you, sometimes when your fling blind like that it doesn't always end well !
Don't worry, I used both eyes haha
Beautiful correction on a tough engine to work on. Great finesse on the entire top end reset. Wait until you need to replace an alternator... ha, move the front clip into the "service position"... yeah, to start with, anyway. Passat... I am sure they misspelled it.
The diag is impressive! But the tool rig up is genius… not to mention, BALLSY! Much respect, Ivan!
Impressive. Ivan is a smart man with a deep level of understanding.
Great job! The Germans don't make it easy, but on the flip side, with a design like that, there is virtually no way the camshaft timing can jump. And none of this would have been a problem if the previous guy had done it correctly.
You continue to amaze me Ivan. Most Mechanics wouldn't have a clue. And they aren't watching this. I have proved that everyday in the Shop I was asked to assist after retirement. What I see Boggles the Mind. And they don't care. But Great Work as always. I hope I can meet you someday.
Ivan, I 100% agree you can buy the diagnostic tools, but it takes a genius like you to get the best knowledge from them. This is without a doubt one of the most impressive diagnostics and mechanical repairs. You are definitely a guru in your field. Dave in Guernsey, Channel Islands.
Oh my man! This was some great work! Awesome repair!
Awesome job Ivan, patients and observation, pays off and saved a lot of time.
Between 95 and 2001 done a lot of those engines. And I've made the same mistake one time 😂😂😂. There was a oil pump recall with the adjuster. Subframe out of the way, oil sump off, and the whole camshaft assembly. Vag keeps you busy 😂
Fantastic. Book says 6 to 7 hours but there is a better way. And you found it and you did a great job showing how you did it. Thanks. I feel you on this. Common sense says go for the easier way. Worst case is you having to do it there way in the end. Engineers wrote that cars manual. They simply reverse the manufacturing process, All your videos are so interesting and I learn interesting stuff every time. There are so many CZcamsrs that will have a 30 min video that feels like and hour but i’m always riveted with your trouble shooting videos. My scanner is nice but old and I really want one like the one you use because yours is quick.
Great Video as always Ivan.
right on the money Ivan
man i love to watch your videos i apply your knowledge to other cars i always learn something with your videos thank you following from daallas tx 👍
Immaculate timing Ivan!
Excellent work Ivan ✌️
Another win for Ivan. Great job. Just like many of your repairs, it would have helped if the customer would have given you the whole back story.
Had me on pins and needles Ivan. Great job and courage.
WOW! You are Amazing Ivan. Thank you for taking us along this journey.
You're the man Ivan , good job 👍
Smart Russian shortcutting the VW procedure. Great job, Ivan!
I love watching your vids Ivan🎉🎉🎉
i was biting my nails when you took those cams out. this video was like watching a thriller movie. you are a truly gifted technician
Thanks for the video Ivan. You fixed it again.
Brilliant again ... Nobody else could have found this one tooth off defect. Bravo Ivan...
I think there are a few out there, not many, and you can probably count them on one hand, also having correct service data is a big help. Good call Ivan I think even Eric O would have struggled a bit but I'm sure he would have got to the bottom of it.
Ivan, as always awesome approach and thought process you always amaze me brother the way you get to the bottom of problems when no other shop can even find the real problem with vehicle 99% of them are parts changers thanks for sharing stay healthy. cheeeers from CANADA
Hello Ivan from Australia 🙃
What can I say but that was just brilliant!!
Well done and happy faces all-round😉😎
Ivan the great, you are a man for all seasons , well done
Brilliant fix, Ivan. Not for the faint of heart!
Awesome Ivan, you beat the 7 hour recommended repair. Nice job!
The owner could have been more open to what they did prior to dropping off the car. There is always the book procedure but IVAN's way is much better, great job!
kudos for figuring this one out. Pico pays for itself!
Very impressive young man 👍🏻🇺🇲
99 percent of the mechanics would have put a cam sensor in when that did not fix it they be stumped and say i do know you are in the 1 per cent of the elite goat greatest of all time and doing with special tools on timing belt amazing
Impressive diag and repair Ivan. You make the amazing look routine.
no special tools and yet results amazing, love it!!!
Exceptional bit of tricky work, thanks for sharing it!
Top notch fix Ivan style that was so cool...
Excellent job Excellent impressive tear down
Ivan you have guts to do that procedure you have my admiration !!!
Everyone on your channel has already stated it. What an Awesome display of diagnosing and repairing this VW Passat 1.8T. The Dealership probably charged 3K-4K to fix this changing out multiple parts that were not needed. You are the man IVAN.
Brilliant job, Ivan. 👍 Gotta be honest, my heart was in my mouth a couple of times.
Very nice work Ivan.
Perfect, Tune up ivan. Your diagnosis skills are very impressive! And they make a Happy customer! . Great job!
Well done again Ivan, I very much admire your methodical approach and your patience.
Well done! I felt my muscles tense up and eyes squint as you held down the camshafts and loosened the last torx bolts.
Imma go make sure my windshield wiper fluid reservoir is full. This blew my mind, amazing.
Ivan, that's a pretty neat trick with the clip to hold the timing belt on the sprocket. I'm putting one in my tool box today!
Well done Ivan!
Nothing surpraises me anymore IVAN YOU ARE AMAZING THE WAY YOU DO THINGS THANKS AGAIN !!!!
This is by far one of your best jobs. You're quite impressive with your thought pattern
Great work Ivan
Well done Mr.Ivan!
Damn dude nice job Ivan I cannot believe you don't have at least 500k subs yet
Well done for the way and the fix, thanks for sharing
Well done. You are one of the best
