  • F-1 World Grand Prix developed by Paradigm Entertainment is a Formula One racing game/sim first released in 1998 for the Nintendo 64 game console and to later platforms including the Sega Dreamcast, Game Boy Color, PC and Sony PlayStation. The Nintendo 64 version is based on the 1997 Formula One season, featuring each of the 17 circuits from the season and all 22 drivers (as well as two unlockable bonus racers), with the exceptions of Jacques Villeneuve (licensing reason) and the MasterCard Lola team (not recognised, as they did not take part in any races during the season).

I think that "97" mode is amazing. I wish games did specific stuff like that now days. I love how they used real life examples and the actual names of Bridgestone and Goodyear. I just wish I was more into F1 racing, but eh I'm an American so I'll blame it on my culture lol.

Not sure if you are still responding to comments for this episode, but hopefully at least you see this.
I gotta say, F1 World Grand Prix was simply the best F1 simulator ever. If it wasn't the difficulty that hooked you, it would be the staggering differences between using the best and worst team's vehicles. Even on the easiest difficulty setting you would really have to grind to pull out a race victory, let alone even a top 10 with a team like Arrows. The F1 video games over the past 4-5 years have been absolute rubbish in terms of difficulty. You could win any race with any team as long as it's not the hardest difficulty.
It destroys any sense of immersion when you can win a race just as easily with Ferrari or Red Bull as you could with teams like Marussia or Caterham.
I actually have the instruction booklet for F1 World Grand Prix, and it actually goes into detail, giving attributes for team vehicle performance (Front and Rear Downforce, Engine Power, Engine Reliability, even Pit Crew capacity.) For AI drivers, the game aimed to emulate how skilled the drivers were (Ability to control the car at high speeds, Cornering skill, Aggressiveness, and ability to drive in rainy conditions)
I could go on and on forever about what makes this game the best F1 game ever. And the amazing part about it is, there's no "Career Mode" to be found anywhere. The Challenge Mode was excellent and I wish more racing simulations and sports games in general featured something like that.
Last but not least, the 97 events mode is something i have never seen mimicked in ANY other game ever. To add to your review, the results of the AI drivers would be exactly how they were in real life with the exception of whichever driver you decided to play as. Think of it as the "impossible difficulty level" that could only be overcome with very specific vehicle settings for each track and an incredible player at the controls.

This was my favorite game back in the day. I started watching F1 in 1994 and the first full championship I followed, was the 1997 season. And I was a fanatic viewer, having subs on two magazines, keeping statistics, etc etc. I remembered almost everything from that season. The Challenge Mode was the absolute best feature in this game, most days I would reset one of the saves and try to complete all the challenges. Fisichella losing that tyre was the hardest one.
Me and my brother also made our own little game; 'the black flag game'. The idea was simple, you play splitscreen Monaco, and whoever get's the first black flag wins. The Tyrrell's were the best cars for this, they would break down the fastest, Minardi would work, but they were too slow. The trick was to weaken your car by bouncing in the walls, but still be fast enough to get to the chicane after the tunnel first (as you would lose 2 wheels if you hit the kerbstones if your suspension was broken = black flag). If your car was too wrecked to still be somewhat fast, you wouldn't be able to lose 2 wheels on those kerbs, it was a silly game of balance.
And if you would hit the corner at casino at the perfect angle, you would also lose 2 wheels, but that was more difficult than a 1080 in 1080 Snowboarding. And if you failed, you wouldn't be able to destroy your suspension before the end of the tunnel chicane. It was the best.
So yeah, guess I wanted to share. I also never figured out what the engineer said when your suspension got wrecked, "Your suspension lost steering"?

I played this recently and it blew me away. It's so detailed and realistic with all the options on. The practice sessions before the big race are so essential for learning the track, tweaking the car set-up and getting an idea about what the weather will do. It's so rewarding when all your hard work pays off on race day and you manage to get good points. Really impressive game.

I never thought of this game as a sim because it had controls like double-tap A to accelerate faster, double-tap B to stop insanely fast and tilt the control stick down and the direction you want to go in order to turn further. I do remember having fun trying to see how many cars I could take out of the race before they finished though! The trick was to slowly approach them from behind until you're touching them, then go full throttle and watch bits and pieces fly off both of your cars! It was especially effective if you were the Gold or Silver driver.

It's mint/complete, etc. My Brother was a big fan of Formula One on the Playstation and I think that's why I picked this up when I saw it. I bought it brand new on discount, opened it, played it maybe once and forgot about it until finding it today - 20 years after I purchased it lol. I looked it up to see this review of it and am very pleased to see that it's very highly regarded. I'm looking forward to playing it, but I have a backlog of old games to get to, so I'm not sure when I'll get around to it. 4:20 that’s because of all the consoles of the generation, the N64 was tight with polygons. Could render more of them than any other console that existed at the time. The N64’s shortcomings are based in textures. That’s why N64 games had better models, and PlayStation games had better textures

It's weird...a lot of people say the N64's graphics didn't hold up at all...I'm in the distinct minority in that I absolutely love the N64's graphics. All those sweet sweet polygons and early 3D models remind me of some of the best years of my life as a gamer. The N64 is exactly what the Atari Jaguar was supposed to be...I know nostalgia plays a huge role in my love for the console, but I still genuinely enjoy it. Yeah, it's too bad they lost a lot of 3rd party support, but there are still dozens of fantastic games worth playing. Anyone who is a racing fan should check out the N64's library in that genre...It is, in my estimation, the best console for racing games...retro or else-wise.

The best game F1 World Grand Prix (97) of that decade and still a great game. I played so many time in my house. When I played the F1 2000 and 2001 for play station 1 the difference one to another was no that big, a mean if you compare the time and the process to made a good game. That because the lines of the tracks wasn't good to see may be its because the speed. When you play a game of car race you have to see farther to prevent the next corner. Could be the graphis and the options for mechanics change a good game F1 2000 and 2001 but when you try to prepare the car for each track or another gran prix its so difficult especially in a warm up (so many options to put). The F1 World Grand Prix have simple options to prepare the car an any different problems in the field and a great display to see what happens in the car when you drive and in the pits. Simple its my favorite game "F1 World Grand Prix - Nintendo 64" and I can talk I´m a fan of f1

I play this game still all the time. It is simply amazing. Only problems that I have are that, even in champion mode, I can do ridiculous lap times, such as 1 min 15's in Australia, some 14 seconds faster than the real life pole position time.
Also, if you are right behind a car going into some corners, then they will sometimes spin off.
Under yellow flags, the other cars do a certain speed limit, say around 180kph, even at corners such as rascasse.
The other cars also have much faster pit times than you, and there is nothing to be done about it.
No matter of your lap times, the other cars near you will be around just as fast as you. So if you are 1st doing 1 min 25's, then the next few cars behind you will do the same. If at the same course you were doing 1 min 25's but were in 18th, then the cars say from 15th to last will also do similar speeds, whilst those out in front will be faster.
Also, if there is a yellow flag on the first lap, then the cars will go at varying speeds. What I mean by this is that the car in front will be the fastest car on the track, then the second car, and so on, but there will be massive differences in their speeds, so the car in first place will catch up to the last car in only 3 or 4 laps. This changes again depending on your own position, as if you are first doing normal lap times than you will catch the last car on only a few laps, and if you are last doing the same speed, then the other cars will do ridiculous speeds.
You can also go just as fast in a Minardi as you can with a Williams.
However, these do not affect the game too much, and it is a really great game to have.

***** To be honest, I only got the game back in the end of 2007. This was the reason why I got interested in F1 in the first place, because I thought it was a different game when I bought it. In the end, I played it for a few days, and have loved F1 ever since. But to answer your question, I haven't ever found the sequel, only seen a couple of videos of it.

My brother and I used to play this all the time, I love the sounds F1 vehicles make. I remember the game would penalize you for cutting around corners, trying to shave a few seconds off your time. As a result, my older brother appreciated it more than I did, but looking back it really is a technical marvel that they managed to fit so much on the cart. As for my fav. Driver, has to be Gilles Villeneuve (biased as I'm Canadian lol), a great racer who's time came way too early.

Spent a huge amount of time on this game; an F1 classic. Played the sequel too..... then left F1 alone until 3 years ago when i picked up a copy of F1 2012 for PS3.
Needless to say, having not played an F1 game for over 13 years the graphics and sound have improved immensely. Yet game play wise i couldn't help but think that there was something slightly missing with the PS3 version compared to this old N64 racer. The Ai hadn't seemed to improve much(if any) from F1 World Grand Prix. Also this old F1 game would have more random stuff happen within the race itself, then tell you about it. For instance, another driver getting a puncher, or crashing out was commonplace. Races felt more alive compared to the more recent Codemasters iteration; where almost no competitors crash out of a race or get engine failure.
I'll never buy another F1 game now....... there's only so many laps of Monaco or Monza i can do before it makes me feel sick with boredom. I don't know how F1 drivers put up with it in real life; or organizers don't change these stale old tracks. Ha, if "variety is the spice of life", then "repetition is the calling card of death".

I remember the first time I saw this game about 2 years ago in one of those 50 games in 10 minutes type videos. I was blown away by the graphics for an N64 game. I saw the game for $.50 and picked it up. When I sat down to play it I was so incredibly turned off by the severe lack of sense of speed. The car never felt that it was going as fast as the speedo said. Actually it seemed like the car reached it's max speed at like 50MPH and made it nearly impossible to judge turns. I actually made money on the game when I traded it for a buck at a different store lol.

Amazingly well done game that worked with what it could, Gran Turismo was supporting full analog input at the time, and the N64 thumbstick as you can tell makes the car jumpy either too far left or right. Rarez reviewed an even better designed controller with better analog joystick reaction, however A and B buttons are still digital, so throttle and brake control are non existent. If you want the full effect of driving an F1 car in this game, shell out a few bucks for a steering wheel/pedal combo, then you'll be on par with the modern racing games and how smooth the inputs are on those games.

    • @counterfit5
      @counterfit5 Před 7 lety

Midnight Mechanic I had a wheel/pedal combo, but the pedals were still digital. If you wanted analog throttle/brake, there was a slider on the edge of the rim, which wasn't very user friendly mid-corner
