- Moonlight is far more complex than you might think. There's a ton of science that goes into lighting moonlight for filmmaking, and there's multiple different looks. So come with me to learn how to create perfect moonlight.

slowly becoming one of the best filmmaking channels on YT. Don't stop!
Thank you! I've got too many ideas I want to try to stop now, so I'll for sure keep posting!
Agreed!
I'm surprised this doesn't have hundreds of thousands of views with how ell produced and professional this video is. I don't do film making but I found this very educational and interesting.
you basically are my film school at this point
easily one of the best and most in depth lighting tutorials ive seen sheesh man
☺Thank you so much!
Common mistake is also exposing the ext moonlight as much as the interior practicals. Moonlight compared to interior lights are usually really dim and it would certainly add more realism if you dimmed that ext light by a lot !
Great job on your video! Very didactic, well researched, and super fresh format. Congrats and thanks!
This is a great channel for filmmaking
i love how simple but full of application these videos are, and lighting is what i need to work on the most. keep these up!
This video is easily one of the best I've seen all week! Thanks for the tips!
The mirror thing was brilliant! I love your videos, they're the funnest to learn from
I was not thinking it was that Difficult. But you made it clear and simple ❤😊
Thank you!! I would say I definitely over complicated it to some extent. I wouldn’t always think of all of that, and you can definitely get away with less, but I just find the intricacies of moonlight to be so fascinating!
@@WilliamHBaker of course you made. I saved your great video for future reference 🥰. Much appreciated 😊
Your videos are so informative and entertaining! Thanks for this!
I'm a new viewer, I love your videos! They're so informative, and interesting as someone who knows nothing about filmmaking it just came up on my YT suggestions. Have been binge-watching since! These videos are just oh so cool!!
Love how in-depth and insightful this is! Really well put together, William! Amazing format 👏
Thanks!! I was really excited to teach it all! I learned it recently and found it super interesting!
Congratulations! You're a true master at capturing the essence of light in your paintings.** 🎨🌟
So fun to watch! Great Work!
Thank you!!
i just learned so much in 9 minutes. Thank you William!
That was spot on. Excellent.
Incredible breakdown. Great info!
A very informative video with incredibly professional production value. Plus, your delivery is outstanding. You have a real talent for this.
Thank you so much! I'm really excited to keep creating!

Great video, i learn so much from you, tanks so much!
Incredible , as always , Love from france man
Excellent work!
What else do you have for us to watch cuz I can’t wait! Each one is put together so well, it is hard to be patient 👍. Thank you for sharing your gift!
I love the aesthetic of your videos! Wonderful editing + typography. Great rhythm. And thanks for the education on moonlight!
Thank you so much! I spend a bit of time trying to pick a style theme for these videos so I'm glad it didn't go unnoticed!
@@WilliamHBaker The slightly soft text gives the footage a more filmic look, almost like a 16mm instructional film from the 70s or early 80s.
The depth of creating moonlight. Top notch bro
That`s one of the best videos I`ve ever seen!
Thank you!
So good dude!!
The talent is insane!!!!!
This is such great quality video tutorial, hopefully it gets more attention
Thank you!
Loved it ❤
Really good video, thank you!
This video was so damn good and now I’m going to apply the same principles when setting up my moonlight ! Great stuff man ! Looking forward to more ! Now… to binge the rest of your videos !
Thank you! I wish I had more educational content to binge, but I plan on continuing to make videos consistently here on CZcams!
Please drop more of your lighting breakdowns! Learning a lot.
I have a bunch more ideas in mind! I mean, with moonlight covered, naturally the next step is tackling sunlight!
@@WilliamHBaker Let's go!
Well done!
I´m a beginner Filmmaker (not related to my channel) and this is very usefull cince its some high quality, entertaining content. Keep it up.
Greetings from Germany
very well presented.
The chapters, the music, the diagrams, and the SCIENCE !!!! 🤌🤌🤌🤌 SO GOOD!!!! Loved this video. Also, did I see some DZO's in the background???? Future video???
Thank you! I love the DZO's TONS! I think I will end up making a video talking about them! Maybe going over lenses in general and how they work too!
Also, I love your videos!
I get a savory feeling watching this stuff?
Just about to upload my own moonlight video but… like… yours is so much better 😂
Amazing video! I am not kidding... I was lighting a scene experimenting with moon-light yesterday and used a lot of your tips, and when I was finished, I went to CZcams and saw you uploaded this video. I should have seen this before. Mirrors is a genius thing. I want to experiment more with that, it makes lighting so much more interesting.
One question, I want moonlight in a scene shot indoors for a short film, where it is supposed to rain outside, I know it makes no sense with moonlight when it is raining, but do you have any idea how to get that realistic? It is also so that you can see the rain on the window, as water need backlight to show on the camera. No idea if it is even possible to combine these two things?
Keep making these amazing tutorials, William :-)
I love the video 📸
The amount of information here is unparalleled when compared to any other channel on CZcams
Thank you! I find these topics to be so fascinating and I'm always super excited to share what I learned!
Super cool and interesting content 🙏 I also love the music selection, any chance we can get the track list? cheers!
Incredible
Wow❤... Keep it up

recommendations for how loud background music should be with voices or voiceovers
Thank you for the detailed explanations! Just a question- when you showed the example with the moonlight coexisting with the lamps in your shot and in other movies, to me that always read more like the environmental light/ street lights reflecting streetlights from other surfaces more than "moonlight" specifically and so felt more realistic, is it always intended as moonlight?
This video really helps me a lot!! - What is the Kelvin Temperature of your light before put the blue filter? 5600K?
Love it! The CRLS kits have been THE next thing on my list to buy asap for the accurate lighting needed to simulate the sun and moon! I'd be curious if you can get the same color by putting the gels on a CRLS kit!? Or RGB lights.
I like blue/green tinted moonlight BUT i super like silver. If anyone is curious, Shane Hurlbut's Silver Moonlight look is achieved by white balancing Tungsten lights to 2800K NOT 3200K on the camera. I think it also works with LED's that are set to 3200K but it's the subtlest of differences between them.
Oh yeah those reflectors look dope! I hope to have a kit someday!
Maybe use a cyan gel plus a full ctb, the cyan will take out all the red that the moonlight is illuminating and the full ctb will cool the color and take out the green tint
What if??? you use the muslin cloth closer to the window with the final setup ??? We can soften the light a bit more right???
Hey I like the look, but i do have some feedback. I think if you are going for a more stylized look, then this look works, however if you are looking for the "PERFECT MOONLIGHT" in a more naturalist way, i would suggest using a softer bounce panel like the crls panels to give your moonlight a softer spread and glow, also it would help the viewer to see a little bit of the darkness of the night which makes it more believable, yes you might lose output but i think it looks more natural that way. What you could do to bring up the overall levels inside, is you could bounce light onto a 4x4 beadboard and use your light meter to meter your ratios to match the level of your moonlight on the talents face, THIS WOULD ALSO PROVIDE A MUCH NEEDED EYE LIGHT :) Id also bring your light source even higher and tilted downwards. I do like how you mixed the blue and green gels, i've tried that before and got decent results.. Like i said overall good image, keep putting out more bangers. excited to see what you come up with NEXT :)
Thanks for the feedback! I don't have a light meter or the budget for CRLS reflectors, but could put together an alternative with some wax paper on a mirror or something!
@WilliamHBaker that would be interesting to see the results on that, u should definitely try that I'd love to see how that works. You could also use both sides of foil paper and see how that works. Keep doing your thing , more success to you and your CZcams channel 👌 💯
so shine a light onto to a mirror or silver surface and apply a gel?
What was the temperature on the camera?
What watt light did you use?
Hmm, usually they film during day of overcast. It is in post the look is created
I want to start a channel combining cinematography and music, just scared, also need help to get start.
Theres nothing in the world where the moonlight would shine as bright as hollywood's been potrayed it as, exaggerating to achieve "art" look is acceptable aslong it is atleast close to realistic. but most of them moonlights are eyesoring to watch
Gawx should see this

If I'm correct you changed over from short from to long form videos and it shows. You are afraid to just let viewers breathe for a bit. However the content of this video might be useful, the style makes it hard to watch.
Thanks for the insight! Yeah I'm actively working on letting the videos be a bit longer naturally. In your opinion, what would letting viewers breathe look like to you? Like just casual moments on set, longer periods of time without voice over... something like that?
@@WilliamHBakerI would say that longer periods of time of showing off what you are doing throughout the video would be beneficial for the view to “breathe” a little more as stated prior. The voice over amount is good in my opinion, it is very informative and I am able to understand it all. So props to you for that. But by the “let viewers breathe” I believe the original comment made was to say about letting the viewers be able to process the things you are talking about before you go to the next. For example, in this video, you went from step 3 to step 4 directly after explaining what you did in step 3. If you could possibly give off some more looks of what you did before you switched to the next step, that might be able to let the viewer “breathe” a little more. This is just my thought, I didn’t make the original comment, so I don’t know what they were thinking about it. I hope this may help!
No such thing as moon light, it’s just sunlight bounced. But great video, learned a lot!
