  • So I've just spent five days on the Isle of Arran off the West Coast of Scotland, doing some wildlife photography.
Within the first hour of arriving on the island I saw a pod of dolphins swimming just off the coast near the ferry port along with a male red deer stag walking along the beach, 30 minutes later after a drive up over the tops towards Lochranza, I spotted a male hen Harrier hunting over the hills close to the road.
What an amazing introduction to my wildlife photography trip here on the Isle of Arran.
As the days went by I was constantly surprised with the wildlife and even took time out just to sit back and admire the views and the red deer roaming the hills.
As it was now the month of October the deer rut was in full swing and the roaring red stags could be heard all across the island from sunrise to sundown these mighty beasts roared dominating their female deer and warning other stags to stay clear.
Down by the sea I was fortunate enough to photograph and see the otters along with the goosanders gannets and cormorants.
What a fantastic five days I have just spent on this wild island of Aaron.

The pictures of the gray seals were so beautiful. And what a stroke of luck to get the rainbow behind the deer!!!! That would be the picture of a lifetime for me. Thanks for a great video.

Superb video and images of the Hen Harrier in flight, liked the slow mo of the Cormorants on the rocks. Seen videos of people using an old frying pan as a base for a tripod head , might be a bit sturdier, but the downside would be heavier and noisier than plastic .

Yeh I like it there, not as busy as Mull and plenty to explore, I feel like Arran is the unexplored Mull. 👍

Cheers David, glad you enjoyed the video, I know it was a bit long, but did not want to split it into two, and ended leaving a few clips out, but a great trip none the less 👍😀

Great video. I couldn't face watching the hind sequence, but you did the right thing by contacting the local ranger. Just for info, it's pronounced with a 'long' I as in high... Great tip about the ground pod. The official ones are totally overpriced. I made my own from a frying pan after watching a Paul Miguel video a few years back. they're nicknamed frypods... Frisbie is a really good alternative.

Thanks for the tip about the Hind obviously unless I had heard someone actually pronounce it then I would probably have , said it correctly lol 👍 yeah the ground pod, is very lightweight and easy to just stick in your backpack., just saw it in another video looked online, not many places to buy one, so just made my own .👍😀

So natural. A truly beautiful video. You have given us a very special experience, Ashley. Congratulations on the Hen Harrier, a 'lifer', and the deer and rainbow image... stunning.
I felt for you coming across the hind... those eyes... the Rangers would have helped her. Wonderful people. Wherever you go next, we will follow along. And thank you.

I sailed on captain Scott 3 masted schooner. The would drop of watches and we would hike from one side of an island and be picked up the other side. You have taken me back to 1975. Walking over goat fell. The cloud’s came down and we had to sit it out. It was far too dangerous. You couldn’t see your own feet. And just as quickly it had gone.

This is the first time I have come upon your channel. What a wonderful video, that Hen Harrier shot!! I particularly enjoyed seeing that buzzard just hovering so effortlessly . Going to enjoy watching all your other videos now :)
Shame about the deer though, glad you rang the rangers, at least they would have either been able to help her or put her out of her misery, its lucky you were passing and saw her.

It looks like a great trip and a lovely variety of subjects. It's a real shame about the hind (high-nd) who was stuck, but you did the right thing contacting the rangers. For the small birds, they certainly look like Redwing, Fieldfare and Mistle thrush. The fieldfare and redwings can often be found in small loose flocks, and the mistlethrush in particular like to hang out in the tops of trees - each of these three love the berries. Most fieldfares are migratory and arrive from late September, staying until spring (Mar/April) - as with most redwings. Those two will sometimes roost together as well as feed together. Nice spot

The Dolphins are a common sight on the Clyde there is boat trips from Greenock that also do Sugar boat tour .. .,,,TBH You should be lucky the Ferry wasn't cancelled .. lol .
Try cycling around the Island on a Bike .. the road to lochranza .. is a killer mind you the view point from the top is quality ,, If you headed to Lunderston bay down between Gourock and Inverkip you'd have bagged a few Curlew's ,
How much was your Hotel or BnB for the week ?

    • @WildlifePhotographerUK
      @WildlifePhotographerUK  Před 9 měsíci +1

Hi @colintraveller, Yeh i have been to Arran 4 times now, and only once was it touch and go with the ferry, most of the time the issues are mechanical, but this time the ferry was canceled the day before because they could not source a part to fix it with, so they had to fly one in lol. Yeh saw lots of cyclists around this time, quite a few on the way up the hill, as for Cerlew there were always a few around Dougarie, but I am sure you know they fly off as soon as you approach. I stayed in the Shorehouse in Brodick, £295 for the 5 days nothing special, but clean apartments, bedroom, kitchen, lounge, and bathroom all you need. I am not there for a holiday so not bothered for cosy comfort and class. 😜👍
