Clara Lieu was an Adjunct Professor at the Rhode Island School of Design from 2007-2020. Her artwork has been exhibited at the International Print Center NY, the Currier Museum, Childs Gallery, the Davis Museum, and more. Lieu received an artist fellowship from the MA Cultural Council, has written for the NY Times, and lectured at Brown University, the NAEA conference, and in Vancouver & China. She has been profiled in Artsy, Hyperallergic, KPCC, & WBUR.

I just watched a documentary about them not too long ago.
Carmine is a historical pigment made from the cochineal beetle, a common name is crimson lake. It has and is used in everything from food to cosmetics to oil paint to being a traditional fabric dye. When used in food it is known as red number 4. It is a fugitive pigment and has largely been replaced by red number 40 in food and by synthetic red pigments like Anthraquinone and Pyrrole in paints.

Carmine is the main pigment used for red in makeup. I’ve felt conflicted about putting crushed beetles on my face for a while now 😅
Cochineal beetles are also in food and drink with red or pink colour, like red velvet cake. They put some weird crap in food! Like Rennet is baby cow stomach, and gelatin is ground up animal connective tissue, castorium is beaver anal gland secretions, L-cystine, makes shelf life longer for bread is human hair. 😲

Those flat brushes that you showed are called Deerfoot brushes and they're used for creating natural looking foliage. They're amazing!
I've also seen a Japanese artist the one someone else mentioned in the comments use these short brush in combination with a tube with a mesh in it to create gold leaf speckles over her work. I'm pretty sure the ones shown are specifically for this particular traditional Japanese technique for adding scattered sparkle. Kaiteki art on you tube shows you how to use these brushes with the tube for a traditional type of glitter but made with broken up gold or silver leaf

I don't know what the Japanese use those stiff, short filament, flat brushes for, but Rosemary and Co make a similar type of brush called an Eradicator which is a short bristled stiff brush used for lifting watercolour.
EDIT: OH MY GOD THEY HAVE A WEBSITE!!!! They call that brush a 'pounding brush' which is used to apply gold leaf dust and just to paint with in watercolour.

Gobsmacked! The pigments are incredible...but the brushes...oh my...I figure for any one of those large Hake brushes, you'd be parting with some serious cash! 😮

I'm stunned. You could only ever see a store like this in Japan. Of course, no Japanese artist can shop there until they have apprenticed for 10 years (including 5 years of learning how to sharpen a pencil) 😂. Don't know if you have ever watched the 'why is it so expensive' series of videos by The Financial Times but they highlight lost and dying handmade traditions, many of them from Japan. The one on Hake brush makers is incredible. The video always starts with, first you apprentice for at least 10 years......

wow, that place looks amazing. I used to watch some people make their own paints. I think they would buy the pigment and the binder and use some kind of glass to crush and mix them. those people would die (of happiness?) in that store. I would be overwhelmed by the selection although it is really amazing and gorgeous. I think I would want to live there and not have to buy anything. lol

Thanks for the video. Well, I already figured out that if you don't have $, you can roam in the woods & find some stick or small log to paint on. I never would have dreamed I could find paint medium there to: BUGS!!! Yikes.... Oh now I recall- people extracting color 1 way or another from tea, coffee, flowers, plants... hmmm...

Carmine, or cochineal consists of a mixture of … crushed beetles. More specifically, these dried insects are boiled in water to extract the carminic acid they contain (or did contain).
