- The bunny hop is not only the first building block to the rest of freestyle bmx, but also the most important building block.
Almost everything within bmx utilizes aspects of the bunny hop in one way or another, which is why it is such a great first step for someone just starting to ride BMX.
In this video I define the bunny hop, talk about the prerequisites that come before it, and then dive in depth to the steps necessary to learn bunny hops.

I learned to bunny hop by learning little manuals and nose manuals and combining them together. Then I practiced my bunny hops until they were good enough to even be considered bunnyhops (it took me like 2 months so take your time)
One of the best how to bunny hop vids on ze yt
And that's the best compliment i could get on it! Thank you!!!!
Sir Brant, I learned to lift my back wheel up because of this video! Thanks!! Peace
Sir??
Thanks for this. You brake tutorial is great and now as a 40 something getting back into BMX after 30 years realising I need to improve my bunny hop watching this has helped me realise I need to work on something else I could never master to really improve them, endo's. Time to get to work.
This is soo helpful. Not only is it a good technique, but it is very well said and you enunciated so we could clearly hear you. Thanks so much!

Just curious, how'd you get verified on here? I've tried and have only had them tell me there's no chance of it till i get to 100k
@@Brant_Mooreno idea. I never made a video but ive had my gmail for like 15 years. Dont even know what it means lol. Sorry.
Just got my 1st bmx (since 88) im 38 now....great video. Sub for sure
That’s so awesome!! Thank you so much and what’d you go with?
@Brant_Moore i got a cheap mongoose from a kid. 20.5 top tube. Its a cheap bike but ut will ride for now. Lots of stuff has changed since i was a kid lol. As i learn ill add better parts. Definitely better handle bars 1st.
Hey a bikes a bike! At least you’re on one!
Hey Brant ... Great vid
Thank you!
@Brant_Moore your welcome
Great vid per usual! My main issue that I’m not going is how do you fully extend your arms and get the full “tuck.” Even at the dirt track I see other people getting the back fully tucked and I’m nowhere near that watching my replays.
Thank you!
The tuck comes from bending the knees and keeping the arms straight while still trying to pull upward. It all happens in one motion on the way up.
Just something that develops over time
@Brant_Moore awesome thanks bro! I’ll keep at it! I just wish BMX came as easy to me as surfing. I will progress!! 😩
Haha sometimes the best things that are the most worth it don’t come easy.
You’ll get it!
Il study this
Which geometry would you recommend for beginners?
I am 6 foot, which would be perfekt to learn
Bunny Hop
Manual
Stair jumps
Good video, I’m sure someone told me years ago 2 wheels at once was called an English bunny hop 😅 it sounded stupid, but is there any truth to that?
I need it
By the way, Is jumping or springing up is a big factor of bringing your bike up high? Is it the foundation of a high bunnyhop? So lets say I am a 6'1" 200lbs obese guy, Im 35 now and just got into learning to bunnyhop, and I got poor vertical leaping,.. Would that be the case of me not being able to hop high? I did all the steps and can lift the front then rear wheel up, nose heavy, but cant have HANG TIME on the air.
It just kind of takes time and practice to learn how to hop higher. Keep practicing and you’ll be hopping higher in no time!
@@Brant_Moore sir Brant hey thank you for the tip! I hope everythings ok out there in your area regarding the Covid ish... Love and respect all the way from the Philippines sir. I hope you find time on hitting the "S" on my house if it aint too much sir. Hehe Thanks heaps!!!
my right upper arm and shoulder always hurt for many days after practising bunny hops. I think my technique for pulling the bars up might be off or my frame is too long for my body size. Does any one experienced the same thing?
Bunny hops take a lot of energy, it could just be you getting used to them. It’s also possible your bars are too low but I think practicing more and more will strengthen the necessary muscles to make it not hurt
@@Brant_Moore That's what I was thinking too at first, but it doesn't feel like a normal soreness. The pain really throws me back in my progression. I Used to work out regularly, that's why it makes me wonder.
I thought that my frame might be too long (just 20.6") so that I don't have the right leverage to pull the bars back with my body weight.
How tall are you? 20.6 is right in the middle as far as top tube lengths go so its hard to say
TheGOSimpson naa it killed my arms and wrists but im good now
I can't get my back tire a mm of the ground...
Hop 3s?
I’ll be honest, I’m the absolute worst at hop 3’s so I’m the worst example to learn one from. Haha
@Brant_Moore I guarantee you're not the worst, I am lol
Has anyone done a backflip bunny hop ? 👀
