I will say he is 100% correct on the 9mm vs 40S&W round. Former law enforcement here, and shot a Sig p229 40S&W years ago as my duty weapon, they were what was issued us. I shot the gun really well, never had any issues with it, so when I left they were going to other handguns and I purchased my issue weapon. I have carried it ever since until last year. As I got older I started having arthritis in my hands and wrist, and the day after the range I would ache. I loved my Sig, and didn't want to learn a new gun. I bought a Sig M11-A1 in 9mm. It did the trick the recoil was less. didn't have the pain the next day. I won't say that I shot it way better than my .40 S&W but I could group my shots quicker. The other thing was I put the same grips I hand on my P229, they look like twins, used the same holster, and my wife didn't know I bought another gun. Which really made the switch a win win win!

🤣I did armed security for the FAA 7 years, pre and post 9/11 (and later went Active Duty, Army). I purchased my first handgun at about 24 years old from a coworker. A used SIG PRO SP2340 in .40 S&W. It was a cheaper Sig model and had a polymer frame. I spent many hours at an indoor range plinking. It was a good gun, accurate, but it didn't like reloads at all. It also kicked...like it wanted to jump out of your hand if you didn't have a firm grip. I sold it to a fellow Soldier (who later become a State Trooper). About 5 years later I purchased a Sig P226 Elite Scorpion in 9mm eventually got the wife a P239 in 9mm. It's a discontinued model and was purchased used from my local FFL. It has a single stack mag and fit her hand better than anything else full-frame we looked at. I'm fine with 9mm and happy I only have to buy one type of ammo now for both of us. She never shot the .40 but I'm sure she would have been intimidated by the kick. She has difficulty with the slide release though with her womanly weak thumbs 😂

If you’re comfortable with your 40 or 45 that you’ve had for years, I’ll never tell ya to ditch it. But this is a hill I will die on: if we’re comparing 9mm, 40, and 45….. they all do the same thing for all intents and purposes. Shot placement is what matters. A determined attacker will not go down unless you hit his off button. That being the heart, spine, or T-box(nose and eyes area). More bullets equals more chances to hit an off button. Less recoil equals easier to get a followup shot….. to try to hit that off button.
If you don’t hit the vital areas it doesn’t matter what caliber you use. Just be confident in it and make sure it’s still a “real” caliber(380 and up basically). My reasons are why I choose 9mm. But use whatever “real” caliber gun you’re comfortable with.

The best ammo for self defense is the ammo that works reliably in the gun that you prefer to carry. It's all better than a sharp stick. For me, it's always a JHP. I stay away from "boutique" self defense ammo because it's too pricey and isn't always better than basic Winchester white box or similar. At one time, years ago, our area of the Carolinas had a serial killer on the loose, followed a couple years later by a rapist. All our local sheriff's and police chiefs encouraged everyone legally eligible to get their CWP, and literally said they'd "look the other way" for people who had pending applications. They let us know they didn't have enough deputies/officers to respond as quickly as a true life & death situation required, and to be prepared to defend ourselves, and our loved ones!

They set up remote permit stations all over the county, where you filled out your application in advance, showed up,waited inline for a while, then handed them $20, and in 4 minutes they printed out your license. I have heard they issued over 200,000 licenses in under 2 years. WE ARE ARMED.

I personally think jhp are effective largely because sd ammo is loaded more consistent than cheap fmj and the effects of opening prevent the less desirable over penetration. If they fail to open they zip through like a fmj and if they break apart they lose weight and may fail penetrating a vital. I've been using the 9mm +p xd rounds from Underwood because they group tight for me and the recoil impulse is really comfortable, they are as barrier blind as fmj but stop consistently in a soft target. For my carry ammo my priority is reliable, accurate, and doesn't pass through and hit someone else. I like practicing with a higher recoil ammo and when I fire a box of my carry ammo it's far easier to fire fast and tight groups.

For those people in New Jersey. I do not remember who used to make it, I think it was Federal. It was called guard dog ammo and it was Full Metal Jacket but the nose of the metal jacket. Had silicone between the jacket and the front of the lead body of the bullet. And when it hit something it would at least expand I believe to about 50 caliber or a bit more. Maybe a bit less. But it would do it even when it hit something hard. It wouldn't just fill up the hollow-point and act like a full metal jacket. But it is a full metal jacket round. If it's still manufactured, I believe once again that it was called guard dog ammo. And it was a reasonable man stopper. I don't know why they don't want you to carry hollow-point ammo. Howell point ammo kills fewer people than Full Metal Jacket because you don't have to shoot them six or eight times. Usually one or two Good Hits will bring somebody down.

If you’re new then maybe it makes sense to stick with 9mm but if you’re used to shooting another caliber like .40 for many years, especially over 10, then it really makes no sense to jump on the bandwagon. I remember reading and watching gun videos where people would say choose the largest caliber you shoot best and practice. My cousin who introduced me to shooting and appreciation of guns took me to a small Turners gun shop to purchase my first gun. Since he had a 9mm, I was going to get one too. They didn’t have 9mm in the Springfield XD pistols at that store or at any of their stores in the part of the state I live in. We were on our way to a range, so I chose .40 and I never regretted it. My cousin shot my gun and found my XD 9102’s recoil minimal and almost the same as his 9mm. I later shot a .357 686 Smith&Wesson revolver and found it even smoother than either 9mm or .40mm. I would then purchase a 1st edition Shield chambered in .40 as my EDC/conceal carry gun. I stippled it, replaced the guide rod and spring, ported it, and added a laser-light combo. I still have those 2 guns many years later and I’ll only purchase .40 caliber guns to KISS. I stocked up on all the calibers I own many years ago, and I only have several calibers to simplify things.

Getting close to 6 years as a full-time firearm instructor. Every Law Enforcement Agency in my state is going BACK to 9mm from 40 S&W. As many have previously stated, SHOT PLACEMENT trumps all other factors. Put a 22LR through the nasal cavity of an attacker and there is a 99% chance that the attack stops in seconds. Now... can the average CCW permit holder or average LEO place that shot on a moving attacker? Probably not.
But for a center-mass shot, 9mm hollowpoint ammunition generally can reach vital organs but not exit the attacker - that is IDEAL for defensive ammunition. 9mm in Hornady Critical Duty, Hornady Critical Defense, or Federal HST is my go-to ammunition for defensive use.

I love when people claim that "9mm has gotten much better over the years". First, that is not really true, and even if it was true, do they not think the SAME improvements would be applied to the other calibers as well. As far as speed of shooting different calibers, if you practice appropriately you will be shooting about the same speed regardless. It comes down to what caliber you practice with. Paul Harrel did the speed test with 9mm, .40, and .45 at ten yards with 10 shots from a draw and his speeds were only a few tenths of a seconds slower for the larger calibers. When you divided that to splits it was less than a tenth of a second. I seriously doubt that is the difference in winning a gun fight. The person that gets ANY significant hit to his opponent will win well over 90% of all fights. The bigger the bullet for that critical "first hit" the more effective it will be. That's just pure physics in my humble opinion. There is nothing wrong with carrying 9mm, but these claims that it's better than a 40 or 45 caliber are just silly.

9mm is definitely not that good across the board, however some varieties with the right technology, in the right gun are as "as good" or almost as good as 'better' calibers. I would say that the 124 gr weight at a +P level in at least a 4.5" barrel is pretty decent, add a good bullet like a Gold Dot or HST and now you are about there for acceptable. Personally I find the HST 124+P in a 5" barrel to be the bees knees with it's adequate penetration and over .60" caliber expansion, but in a shorter barrel I will opt for Gold Dot 124+P because they get a tad more velocity than HST in a shorter barrel.

    • @GunSam
      @GunSam Před rokem +3

@@nokoolaid Yes that is true, but what I have seen is that not all ammo companies apply the same technology, and often times they underload other cartridges. For instance, whether it be Gold Dot, HST or Golden Saber Bonded, through testing of 9mm .40 and .45 in 5" pistols, if a 9mm+P claims 1,200 FPS I often get 1,300 FPS, then I take the same company's .45 ACP that claims 850 FPS, and i'll get 780 FPS, or if it's a .40 it claims 1,000 FPS and I get 900 FPS, through my own chronograph testing of course. Same underloading with .357 Mag and .38 Special often, so it is clear that the main companies are really putting effort into making sure their 9mm will stand up to ballistic testing to win over large contracts, while saying **** it to the other calibers that they aren't getting contracts with.

@@DavidLLambertmobile I haven't heard of the Ranger One, but I have seen similar like "where is it" situations on ammo. I believe it was January 2022 that Federal announced HST in .357 Magnum and .327 Federal Magnum as well as Punch .44 Special (all 3 didn't previously exist) and still to this date these loads don't show up on Federal's website or in any physical or online stores. If you research it, all you find is information from January or February where they announced it.

@@GunSam That could very well be and would make sense, but there are options. Buffalo Bore and Underwood seem to make decent non-9mm stuff. Remington used to make a nice 185g +P that got 1150 and had outstanding gel performance. Check out brassfetcher or something like that. It's pretty dramatic. Lucky Gunner Labs has done a lot of testing too, but it seems hard to get the stuff that performs well in their tests.
It might be interesting to buy some 45 HST and pull the bullets and load them in 45 super cases. 1100 should be possible. I guess one can get Speer bullets for similar results, although the HSTs seem to do a little better. Winchester Ranger T was very good too. LGL got nearly an inch expansion with that.

I have a question. Should you train with the same grain bullet that you carry? For the longest time I couldn’t find 124 gr ammo so I had to train with 115 gr , but now I cane find 124 gr ammo so that a problem any more . Just to say I did test the zero on different grains so I know my holds for different weight ammo . I always hear practice with the grain you carry .

It can definitely be beneficial to train with the ammo weight that you carry. It is different for everyone and is ultimately your personal preference on how to train. There are lots of people that train with conversion kits in their guns but will carry a completely different caliber in that firearm. For instance, you can get a 9mm conversion barrel to use while training in a gun that is designed to shoot .40 cal.
What it all comes down to is if you are able to make the slight adjustment and maintain accuracy when carrying a different weight of ammunition in your carry gun.

Pay more attention to muzzle energy than bullet weight. You'll get a better match.

I'd take .40 S&W with Federal HSTs over any 9mm round anyday.

The power of .380 ACP guns is noticeably below that of 9mm weapons. The maximum velocity (1000 FPS) and energy ratings (148 MPa) of the .380 are about 40% below a 9mm, both using JHP+P type loads. While this means the .380 is less destructive, it also performs with less of a recoil, making it a more accurate weapon in short-range, rapid-fire use.

Part of the 2017 military contract for Sig M17/M18 was ammo to be provided. The ammo now used by our military is Elite Performance Sig JHP. It's no longer FMJ except for training. This practice actually started in 2015 with special forces and grew to all after new sidearm trials and selection.

With the two extra mags I carry, + 1 in the chamber, that 46 rounds of Hornady Critical Duty 220gr +p of 45 ACP.

First. I take exception to ammo that opens wide. Pistol cartridges are notorious for not expanding reliably. If they do expand, they put the breaks on! Second. The target isn't the "organs". It should always be the CNS! The Central Nervous System is the target! The only way to Stop the Fight! I'll take over penetration over poor penetration every time! Just my 2 cents.
