+P Ammo is Better for Self Defense?

  • What is p ammo? In theory, bigger is better as well as stronger and faster. Going for a bigger caliber gets you a bigger projectile generally with more energy and more often than not with more velocity. If you do not want to increase the caliber that you shoot, maybe because it would make for a gun that is too big to be practical to carry, you have a different way to go. Choose +P (plus P) ammo. While the projectile is not necessarily heavier, it does leave the muzzle at a greater velocity bringing more energy downrange.
However, there are some myths involving +P ammo, be it in 9 mm (9 millimeter) or any other caliber. There are also some interesting facts, and today, we get to the bottom of both.

This is why .40 s&w is good. There is no +p. Range ammo and self defense ammo are loaded to similar pressures. Additionally the round performance is very good such that there is no need to trade off between hollow point expansion and penetration which means ammo selection is quite easy.

I spoke with a technician at Underwood Ammunition, and asked him what the pressure is on the 9mm 90gr+P+ Xtreme Defender, he said 41,000 psi. BTW any Underwood 90gr +P or +P+ outperforms any HST, I know, I didn't believe It either, until I watched The Military Arms Channel.

I used to be a caliber and brand snob. Only FN and only .45 for me. After getting a lot of real world experience i came to the conclusion: regardless of caliber pistols are the worst, best option for firearm self defense. If you are going to carry one get a reputable duty rated brand (glock, sig, smith, ruger ect.) As far as caliber dont pay attention to stats, or balistic gel. These days the difference between a .45 and a 9mm is fractions of percentages as far as effectiveness. Get the caliber you can afford to train with and can handle the best.

Less recoil is actually better... so you can aim your next shot more accurate

When the use of microfusion (MIM) in the manufacture of firearms was generally extended by weapon manufacturers since the early 1970s, and light aluminum alloy frames became popular, they observed that although They were construction techniques that managed to make firearms cheaper and reduce production times. They had certain material weaknesses that caused some parts to suffer premature fractures, cracks and wear.

+P is only a benefit if the velocity is too low for the hollow point to expand or if the bullet is actually designed to work with +P velocities, but if it's not, and the standard pressure works for the bullet design, and barrel length it's better to stick with that instead. It's a good idea to do research, and make sure the ballistic gel test is being done with the same barrel length that you're gun is to make sure the bullet will work as different barrel lengths will effect the bullets performance.

Why not just get a 357 mag you can use 38 special 38 +p and 357 mag and the added weight helps with recoil

As for 9mm just use federal HST 124 grain standard and then stop talking about it. You can't predict the situation so go with the best overall the jack of all trades not the master of one.

Well done, but some things are over looked or over stated.

Standard load or plus P - got it . In my 1 7/8", +P is not my steady range diet. What is the change in performance between - round nose, hollow point, tapered flat nose and wad cutter bullets - hand gun loads of standard and plus P. Over the years, I've used MFG recommendations in .22LR, .38 spl and +P and ..357. I'd be interested in a video comparing bullet and load.

The 45ACp Is in fact like my ExWife...........Short, Fat and Slow. Very deadly in family court though.

How about this: Instead of trying to max out the pressure of your 9mm, .45acp or other medium performance pistols, buy a gun that is made for high pressure/high velocity/high energy performance. .357 mag and 10mm are already at the level of lethality you desire, and can be used in compact carry weapon. For greater lethality, go to .44magnum or .454 Casul. The guns are rated for upwards of 50,000 psi, and therefore are safe to use with high energy rounds.

Shot placement is everything power of the caliber is just over kill. 9mm is just fine for any human.

In my snubbies I always get them in 357 and load 38 +p, if I roll my own I extrapolate load data between 38 and 357 and load +p+ or load light 357.

any ammo will work. shot placement is the key. you can hit a bad guy with a smith and wesson 500 mag but if you do not hit the target in the place you need to, it will not do you any good.

I solve this problem by carrying .357 Sig in my EDC. The tradeoff for me in this case is, do I eat for the night, or spend that money on a box of ammo instead?
