  • Greg makes 3 drinks he has never had from The Modern Bartenders Guide while he and Meredith chat. It's an after party so anything goes.
In this episode we use a Baldoria Vermouth which is currently shipping free at Curiada - bit.ly/drinkcraftvermouth. They're from the team behind Little Red Door, which is a destination avant-garde cocktail bar in Paris that is consistently ranked one of the Top 10 Bars in the World. The vermouths have JUST arrived to the US and as you can see in the episode are worth a try.

Hey Meredith, I read an article from NPR recently (dated Jan. 26) about a nonalcoholic drinks festival in Washington DC. One of the organizers said "All of the early bartending manuals include nonalcoholic drinks" but after Prohibition "people stopped treating people who don't drink alcohol like adults." It's a really interesting article if you want to google it. It also mentions there are nonalcoholic bitters that might be interesting to try. I don't know if any of this would work for content on the channel, but I thought I'd mention it in case you're interested for personal use. Also, good luck to you and your partner. Trying to get pregnant can be incredibly stressful, especially if there are medical procedures involved. I hope it all goes well.

They thought for SURE I was out. ear buds in place, put me in, started everything up and I sat up and plaster myself to the inside of the machine. I am Blind. My husband is Very soft spoken., and finally had to Crawl Inside the machine, because I Can't hear him, to come GET me, and I Can't See him. It took about half an hour, for him to realize as I'm trying to crawl out the back of the machine, that I just couldn't hear him. Story about Twilight anesthesia I’ve had a few surgeries in the past 5-6 years and the second one the anesthesiologist told me they were going to try twilight method. After my surgery I woke up like an hour later than expected. When they came to see me afterwards they told me that I had an “interesting reaction” to twilight. Instead of sedating me and allowing for the surgery to continue I started to try and get up because the surgeon said I needed to be repositioned so “Wait I can do that for you.” Anesthesiologist said it was the first time he’s ever had full conversations with someone under twilight and I have total amnesia from right around when he injected me with the cocktail to waking up afterwards. They had to put me under general anesthesia to continue the surgery because I wasn’t going out lol. Since then I’ve told every single anesthesiologist that I do not want twilight, and they always give me a look of “how do you know about this” and then I tell them the story.
Edit: oh and when I woke up I almost got violent and they were ready to restrain me because mixing twilight and general is a whole nother business lol

I felt groggy after I finally woke up, but after the fact it’s been a helpful experience.

I was in the pit orchestra, and rather than being down in the pit under the stage we were all in white tux jackets up on top of the set just out of the main stage lights. Since the show takes place on a cruise ship, the set was built to look like the side decks of an old time cruise ship, and we were the ship band out on the upper decks. If you wake up with signs of moderate-to-severe hypoglycemia (feeling excessively hungry or thirsty, headaches, or shakiness, for example...), it could be an indicator that your passing out at inopportune times are maybe a bit more than just being tired.

According to cocktail historian David Wondrich, a dash is about 1/4 of a teaspoon. Personally I use that measurement when making old cocktails. It makes more sense when using syrups or liqueurs than the more modern interpretation of 1/8 Teaspoon. Here are some more old measurements used in cocktails:
    - 1 Wine-glass (or sherry glass) = 2 Ounces
    - 1 Liqueur-glass = ~1 Ounce
    - 1 Pony Glass = 1 Ounce

@@howtodrink Yes, you're correct, old teaspoons varied in capacity. However, if you take the median of the capacities you get closer to 5ml, the modern teaspoon. This doesn't take into account the average, but that would require more research to get a possible answer.

That's for dry ingredients, though! A dash in liquids is literally 10 drops - as in those old-fashioned medicine drop dispensers that were in the lid/cap of medicine bottles. Basically take 10 eyedropper drops, that should be about right.

I wasn't really aware that other people didn't just sleep like that too. The couple times I've needed anaesthesia for surgery, it's essentially the same experience as most nights I sleep and just figured that was how it is for most people too but apparently not lol
