- In this video I bring you along as I have a look at a customers Ram 3500 with the big hemi that was dropped off with the money light on. I took a look at it to discover it was missing power to the fuel tank pressure sensor. Now it is a matter of determining if it is the PCM or broken wire.

Using hose to prevent abrasion is a great idea - highly recommended. I use it all the time and keep a bin of various sizes of old hoses I've removed from cars (free stuff - better still :).
QUICK TIP: Spiral cutting the hose with a utility knife and then wrapping it around the harness has the following advantages:
A. It works to transition 'Ys' in the harness. And two spiral cut hoses can be interwoven to cover the junction of branches in a harness.
B. A spiral cut hose won't retain water like a split hose might if the cut was on the upper side.
C. A spiral cut hose stays in place on tight bends without tape or zip ties.
D. The hose doesn't need to be the 'right size'. A hose with an ID smaller than the OD of the harness can still work.
E. And spiral cut hoses can be used to hold a harness together temporarily while troubleshooting, testing, or rewiring. When done, you can be taping up the harness while unwinding the spiral, saving the need for an extra hand. (Keep it around for the next time)

In the aircraft industry, we use nylon spiral wrap. We also use triangle self fusing tape, but it's a little on the pricey side.

I've used the same method for years. If you've ever run into an Ecoboost F150 where the harness rubs through on the front diff cover, it's the only way to make sure it won't happen again.
Silly question but how exactly do you spiral cut the hose? I can't seem to wrap my head around it.
I own a tire and repair shop in a small northwestern PA town. We repair many a farmers tire on a daily basis. We do their repairs at a minimal profit just to help keep them going. There aren’t a lot of the true family farms left. We need to do our part to keep them farming.
Eric I don't think you're ability to find broken wires is uncanny. You have years of experience and are obviously very methodical and logical in your approach. Love the videos

I spent a good portion of my life on a farm, so I understand why the bottom of the truck looks like that. Went through the same thing helping my Dad in fixing tail/ brake light wires, leaf springs, and brakes.
Mr. O, you do a great job in educating the viewers. I frequently find useful information for jobs other than what you are working on.
A farm truck is a tool, an expensive one although not as [nearly as expensive as a tractor. Good craftsmen respect their tools and keep them in good condition by cleaning them before putting them away. Clean machinery lasts longer, performs better, has a lower cost of maintenance. . If you take something that's broken and dirty to somebody to repair, you're demonstrating to them that you don't really care about that item . Don't expect them to care about anything except their limited scope of work. legal liability and payment.
My uncle had a GMC farm truck that was 10 years old in 1982. I said it only has 32,000 miles on it. My dad said, but those are hard miles.
Thanks Eric for the uncanny ability to find broken wires because this helps to offset the hordes of "mechanics" who cause unmitigated mayhem by not securing wiring back where it belongs.
and a pointy finger to the cut costing accountants that intervented securing it properly in the first place.
It is amazing, that after 100+ years of auto building, running wires thru proper spaces is still a problem.
I don't think it's much of an issue of not knowing how to run the wires through a space but more of an attitude of if we only have the bare minimum of tie down spots we can save $$$$$$

I grew up on a farm and was in agriculture for a bit. A couple of rich townies purchased a house next to our neighbour's marshes. He put pigs on the marshes. The woman asked him to move them as she didn't want to watch pigs fornicating. Of course he left the pigs there. Welcome to the countryside.

I had a Ford F 350 utility truck that I bought used. After well over 100K miles The front fuel tank became unusable, so I replaced the pump (mounted in the tank) and it worked for a few months and then quit again. I figured there was a problem in the switching valve or the dash mounted switch (fired the parts cannon) but still no luck. I finally started to unwrap the wiring harness overwrap and encountered electrical tape. Under the tape there was a corroded crimp connector. I think they had pinched the harness when installing the utility body, spliced the wire with a crimp and taped the hell out of it. The repair lasted 12 years. Like you, I soldered it and my repair lasted another 180 K miles until I scrapped the truck. You really don't anticipate broken wires in a harness that looks undisturbed.
I HATE BUT CONNECTORS! THEIR AN UNNECESSARY USE/QUICK FIX, THAT WILL ALWAYS CREATE ANOTHER PROBLEM! MOISTURE, CORROSION, AND RESISTANCE. LAZY MANS WAY AND UNPROFESSIONALISM. NOT TAKING PRIDE IN ONES WORK. 🙂💖

I do a lot of trailer brakes, wheel bearings, and electrical wiring repair on horse/stock trailers, so I'm very familiar with CRUD.... Did a 16-18 footer wheel bearing with about 10 head of cattle inside. Had to build a tent from the fender out to keep FRESH CRUD from raining down on the work area and me as I worked.

glad you checked out your gifting with your resident expert. your do have a gift for your occupation. took me years to find out what my gift was but after finding it, it was not "work" anymore, but enjoyment which I was able to earn a living. yes, takes to farmers as well as the gatherers, workers at the processer, truck drivers and store employees. without anyone of them, we would not be able to live the life we have. Blessed.

Automotive electrical has always scared the crap out of me. After watching you (and “Rainman Ray”) for the past several months, not so much. Thank you.
I watch both guys too. My expertise is in auto electrical. Ray is a great mechanic, but Eric O is much better at electrical issues. I can tell that Eric thoroughly understands electricity, which makes diagnosis much easier. Once you understand how electricity works, what once seemed like black magic becomes perfectly logical.
Ray follows the book, and wastes a lot of time as a result. Book was written so that below-average mechanics can use it. Eric just turns on his brain and eyes and finds the problem, and to hell with the book.

This took me back to my farm kid days in Iowa. We had the cows. We had the hogs. We had the poo. And we had the broken and/or corroded wires to repair, too!
I spend two hours at work hunting down a broken CAN line and come home and watch CZcams about the expert finding broken wires. If I’m gonna learn to think like a wire I’ve gotta watch the best think like a wire!!!
Soldering is the best way to make a permanent wire repair!
I like Scotch 88 the best too, but usually used Scotch 44 most the time, but switched to the 88 in the winter when the best, more flexible wire was definitely worth the extra $
Eric, I won't need to do 99.9% of the repairs you do in my lifetime, but you have me ready in case I do. Just a weekend backyard Hondo mechanic enjoying the best, funniest CZcams mechanic out there!
Eric, I don't think your gift for finding wires is uncanny,. Rather, you find them because you know where to look; and you know what kind of problem to look for (short, ground, open?); you know it's broken before you start looking because you checked the voltage at the pcm. Rather than uncanny, I just figure its a case of "the more you know, the luckier you get."
Moreover, I feel lucky every time I find one of your videos in my CZcams feed, and it looks like two-thirds of a million other folks feel the same way. BZ
Eric you truly have a gift. A normal person would check every inch of the wire except the last 1/4", taking 2 days to find it.

my grandma was a farmer during the depression. when grandpa died she moved to the city BUT NEVER forgot all the other farmers out there.... nother words what we couldn't grow in the back yard we went to all the other farmers for our meat chicken bacon ect... she taught me a lot bout how to grow my garden .. and no she did not believe in pesticides... it was call companion gardening... by the way MR. ERIC O.... if you could see it in yer heart to maybe teach/send me your in site to be able to sniff out broken wires.. i know its a GOD givin talent... but i would be much obliged. ive have a bunch of them around hear!!! thanks for all you do for all of us.... She is a fifth generation Nebraska farmgirl, she went to college, got her degree, came back to the farm, got a loan from the farm bureau, bought some land, borrowed some equipment from her Dad, and started to learning how to farm. I have learned so much about farming that I didn't know before. I now have a whole new respect for these warriors of the earth. Let's just say farm'n ain't easy folks. It is long days, hard work, and it does have some risk. This is a great channel for adults and all kids, to learn about farming from a family friendly channel. So now I'm all about the farmers. Thumbs up for asking your viewers not to raze this guy about washing his work truck before seeing you. Believe me, this guys has a lot more to worry about than cleaning the bottom of his truck. Farmers don't have time to clean up their truck. They're too busy trying to feed us and pay off the bank.If you think cars cost too much, go price a tractor. Talk about sticker shock !!!!

Just like scannerdanner says, heat, vibration, or places that cause chaffing and you'll find the broken wire. Or in your case, divine intervention. :)

The end of a broken wire emits an electrical field that only certain gifted people can sense. You are one of those gifted people. If you hadn't become a mechanic, you would have certainly been a psychic.
Got a 2014 Dodge Durango on which the rear A/C lines rubbed through in less than 2 years. Warranty fix them but later that year I put it on my in-laws lift and found more contact points. Him and I went through and put host pieces at those contact points to prevent rub through. It's work for 6 years.
I have the same philosophy when it comes to farm trucks and in my shop their smaller equipment too. It may be muddy and “cruddy” and usually rotten right through but these are the people who feed us (in my area onions and corn) so we do what we can to keep em movin
Finding broken wires like this is always a sh1t job!.. I once had a missfire which I traced to a wire rubbed through shorting onto the engine block. Took some finding, but just like you - got there in the end 🙂

Had a transmission change done - a while after I kept getting ABS lights...
Two years later I finally tracked down 3 cuts in a wire - which must have been done while the transmission was being replaced. So annoying!!!

I work on ag stuff, and i give farmers a hard time for not cleaning their equipment. I have printout of service calls from one guy who NEVER cleaned his tractor, visit him about once a year to replace a rotten hose, rusted hydraulic line, corroded wire etc. Common denominator, could have been prevented with cleaning. Cleaning is maintenance, just as much as greasing!

Very good find and repair. The hose trick works great so does split loom twisted around the harness with several wire ties both on the ends and in the middle where the harness rubs and moves on that brace. It will take a long time for the wire ties to wear down and break from rubbing on the brace. Another way is a large tie around the brace and harness then a second tie that pulls tight the first tie between the harness and brace keeping the harness off the brace and tight in place. Learned that one a long time ago.
I approve your soldering and protecting the taped wires with heater hose. Very good work finding the defective wire so quickly. Yes, your talents come from God. Hope you had a great lunch. Is that tall girl Trinity? They grow up so fast!
Definitely a knack for finding broken wires when you follow the process (the Eric O diagnostic process, of course) and have a wiring diagram. You unearthed it from it's cow crap tomb in record time, though!

I’ve used the zipped tied sliced rubber hose protection on semi tractors a bunch. Tons of vibration. On water hoses, electrical, air lines…you name it. Another great video

Age related vision degradation is so annoying. You can use reading glasses and magnifiers, but it's not as handy as when we had "young eyes".

14:55 I worked at a Buick/GMC/Chevy dealership in high school and occasionally, I'd fill in for the lube guy when he'd have some time off.
The dealer was solidly in farm country - NW Iowa- and a lot of the farmers would drop their truck off while they were having coffee with the boys at the local cafe. Needless to say, they were running their truck through the local car wash before they dropped them off and more than a few times, I had to scrape 🐷🐖 and 🐄🐄 💩💩 from the things just to get the thing properly lubed since this was before the days of the "lifetime" suspension components.
And Eric, you're right. Dry crusty poo is much better than soft and wet poo.

I've watched you and that other guy in Florida using the Astro light so I ordered one and use it almost daily as I fix all the broken down crap around here. It's a great tool and finding it helps justify all the time I waste watching repair vids on CZcams.
So much fun working on the ranch vehicles with "Shtuff" covering the whole undercarriage. At least it wasn't fresh "shtuff"
