Hi, Mark. A few years back I asked you questions about travelling through Europe in a wheelchair and accessibility. Well, I finally did it this year with my girlfriend and it was AMAZING! Italy/Rome was the last country we visited before heading back home and it was hands down my favourite country/city. The people are so friendly and are more than willing to help, the food is soooo good, and as you mentioned everything you want to see is relatively close together and as someone in a wheelchair who's having to push all day that was greatly appreciated, especially after 3 weeks of pushing around the UK & Europe. A few tips for those fellow disabled travellers who may be thinking of heading to Rome/Italy. You will get a lot of locals staring at you but don't take it the wrong way, they are kind and more than willing to help. I had a group of complete strangers on a bus walk right up to the bus door as soon as it opened and lift my chair up into the bus and then proceed to ask me where we're going and then explain exactly what stop we need to stop at and then tell us when we got to the stop. If you're in a manual chair I cannot recommend a device called a "free wheel", enough. It will lift your front casters off the ground and saves you having to deal with the cobble stones which are everywhere and can be dangerous, especially the Colosseum. Trust me, it's a life saver. Lastly the toilets are dirty and also finding an accessible one is next to impossible an even the regular toilets are small and compact, so getting your chair in will 9/10 be impossible. A trick I used at a couple of restaurants was transferring onto a wooden dinning chair and then scooting or having my girlfriend help pushing me through to the toilet door and then transfer onto the toilet seat, and then repeating that backwards to get back onto my WC. When travelling through Europe, McDonalds is your friend when you're looking for a toilet as a wheelchair user. Lastly, don't let fear scare you out of doing it. It's the greatest thing I've ever done and with a little thinking and ingenuity you can solve almost all problems that will come your way!

JoshDownUnder this post makes me sooo happy! I can imagine how challenging it was for you to get around (the toilets are crazy for one not in a wheelchair!) but, I love that you did it and with success. I am glad you shared your experience. Happy travels and a big hug to you.

@JoshDownUnder thank you for your well informative comment. I’m in a wheelchair but have the ability to also use a walker. I figured most of my trip in Rome will be in my wheelchair and was apprehensive already knowing this ancient city is covered with cobble stones. I will see if I can get my hands on “free wheel” before September. Thanks again!

oh yes, I live in Rome since i was born, and you said right.!
Is totally true ,we don't share pizza with anyone LOL
    I just want to give you some suggestions ;
-if you wanna have a typical roman breakfast (usually around 7-10 o'clock) ask for a cappuccino and croissant, or Tramezzino (so good)
-if you wanna try the Sicilian food although you are in Rome ;) , go to ' MONDO ARANCINA' or ' SICILIAINBOCCA'
, and ask for ' Arancini' they also have very special desserts

I find that with most places that are big cities, you can disregard what people say about them. I've heard that Parisians are rude, Germans are cold and Czechs are stony faced. I've been to Paris, Berlin and Prague and everyone was lovely, the Germans in particular. I spoke to a guy at a crepe stand in French and he answered everything I said in English, even though I I trying my best to speak the language, because he knew I was a tourist and he wanted to help. How sweet is that? Learning a few words really does help. I loved seeing cashiers in Prague light up when I went in and wished them all Vesele Vanoçe (Merry Christmas in their native language) last December. All those places were super helpful and friendly so long as you're as helpful and friendly back, just like everywhere else.

My tip for people who aren't travelling with their family is to do couchsurfing in Rome (well, in all of Italy actually). The Romans are really friendly (well, Italians in general are) and it will be easy to find a place to stay at. In Rome my friends and I took our couchsurfers dog for a walk and he was super happy about the fact that we were doing it because he was gone for a couple of days and his houskeeper was always super busy. In Verona a guy let us sleep at his apartment because we promised to feed his cats. Fun fact: We actually met the guy in Rome but the guy in Verona was on holiday the whole time and we were all alone at his place. You see, those people are really nice and trusiting.

One of the things that impressed me the most about the Romans is how well they know their city and are only too happy to give directions to anyone who asks them for help. I could stop almost anyone in the city and ask where something was (I got lost a few more times than I care to admit), and I'd always get detailed directions on how to get to where I wanted to go. In fact, I felt sorry for the cops I kept bugging for directions to a certain gay bar I wanted to visit -- they must have been tempted to arrest "that dumb foreigner who keeps asking the same damn question over and over again" just for being an idiot! LOL

My wife and I spent our honeymoon of 8 full days in Rome. We stayed in the center near the Wedding Cake turn left the Forum and Colosseum. Turn right the Trevi, Spanish steps. The family that owned our little 12 room hotel spoke little English but would show us on the giveaway map how to get wherever we wanted to go. I recommend for first timers to get the Rome pass for discounts to many of the places you want to see skipping lines at like the Colosseum. Rome will always be in our hearts.

Oh, and one more thing about Roman bathrooms that will shock you? The bidet is your best friend when it comes to cleaning yourself up after you're done doing your business. My hotel had a really good one in my room's bathroom, and when I learned to get the water pressure and temperature just right, it was paradise. That's why I never could figure out why bidets didn't catch on here in the United States!

Truly cannot be overstated how useful, friendly, and just overall great it is to speak a country’s native language when visiting. Even just a simple “Hello, good day!” or “Thank you! Bye!” or whatever. BASIC things. They go a long way. Not to mention preventing you from getting as easily lost or confused

Great video! Thank you for saying us Romans are friendly Mark :) Being Roman myself I really loved the things you said about my city. Even though I haven't lived in Italy for many years it's still my favourite place in the world. Yes you really do get a pizza all to yourself in Rome which is pretty damn cool in my opinion lol. I'm so happy you mentioned the water fountains because whenever I visit Rome the first thing I always have to do is take a drink from those fountains because it makes me feel ... aww I'm really home

My wife and I found out about the passeggiata or struscio as our Roman hosts called it by accident on our first night of our 8 days in Rome. I will always remember watching the flocks of sparrows swirling around as the sunset from the top of the Spanish steps descending into the crowd. Each night, we would walk among locals, tourists, and fellow people, and it gave us a love for your city. I also recommend drinking from the fountains and having a pizza made with local flour and that water.

Such great advice. Heed the tips, it's so worth it. Folks if you study, invest the time and prepare it makes a trip to Rome so much better. You'll gloat when you bypass a line because you got reservations, or know the side entrance. You'll have a great side trip if you plan to find an out-of-the way eatery, locate it, and escape the bustle to enjoy something great! And when you get away from the crowds to find those out of the way restaurants, you get to rest, use their bathroom (bathrooms are for paying customers, then they don't mind!) and you can pace your day with strategic stops. Don't hesitate to buy a citypass (Roma Pass), it's worth it - do the math and add in saving time in lines. No contest.

I love watching your videos! Last March we went to Paris, there weren't a ton of lines and tourists - at least not as much as I expected. We are going to Rome close to the same time next year. Will the lines be less there as well? Also, we are fortunate enough to be able to spend about three weeks there. All of the tips I see online are for 1, 2, 3, or 7 days. Will we get bored or are there more than the top few things to see? oh, and by the way, your familia e bella!

So true! Roma e' la citta' eterna! And yes, take care of your personal business before you leave your hotel or pensione, start early, and ABSOLUTELY take a walk just a few blocks into the local neighborhoods for some of the best food and experiences meeting with the locals. And shopping and deserts. The water advice is great. Roma can easily become a second home even for the most seasoned travelers. Ciao! 🇺🇸🇮🇹

I fell in love with Rome too. Did 8 days last year stayed at the Hotel Sromboli nex to Termini station. Two things I would say, 8 days was too much I got ancient rome overdose. I was walking past amazing things and the only thing going through my mind was "oh look more ancient Rome". Some times you can have too much of a good thing. Also I recomend an entire day (bring food and drink) to fully explore the Roman forum and Palatine hill. Another thing try to plan your visit for the first sunday of every month because all museums are free. Get there early!

I'd recommend going to Rome during winter, it's still pretty warm, around 15 C most of the time and the lines are significantly smaller. It took me 20 minutes to get to the coloseum, but half of that was trying to find where is the place they check tickets.

    • @Obyvvatel

Also you should go find restaurants where actual native italians go - use some app on your phone and read comments and you'll find the ones.
