That "clap" sound during the song is Neil playing a "clap trap" with his left foot. You can see it here at 0:36. He also triggers other effects with his feet and pads.

I really enjoyed this song from the album Power Windows. When I was in the Navy, I hadn't really appreciated who Rush was and what they brought to the music scene. On my first 6-month deployment in 1989-1990, someone in my shop had many Rush albums so I was able to listen to many more tracks than I had only heard from radio play in my teens. For my second deployment in 1991, I brought 3 of their albums with me: Power Windows, Hold Your Fire, and Presto. It was during that deployment, playing those albums over and over, that I really appreciated just how good of a band Rush was (yes, I know I didn't pick the 3 best albums), and they could tell a story with their songs. Incredible stuff, and thanks for sharing.

This was from their new wave synth era. It wasn't my favourite era but I really do love this song.
They went back to their heavier sound in the 90's.
Animate from the Molson Amphitheatre Toronto
Caravan from the the Time Machine Tour live in Cleveland
Stick it out official music video

Another song you may like from this era is Force Ten from Hold Your Fire, which was performed live on their A Show Of Hands concert video. Cheers from Toronto!

Geddy Lee's bass of choice at this time was a Steinberger XL2, with a graphite neck & body. 9 volt battery in rear compartment to power the inner "pre-amp" which produces a "hotter" signal going to amplifiers. It creates a certain type of gnarley bass tone that he wanted to share with all Rush fans at the time. That bass is headless with a tiny rectangular body. Back then they were $2000 bucks new. I believe it was his 1st 9 volt powered bass. Most jazz bassists nowadays prefer a 9 volt or 2x9 volt battery powered preamp inside of rear bass cavity. Bass has 24 frets vs only 22 frets on his Rickenbackers & his Fender Jazz basses. 2 extra frets...big deal? No, not really...95% of bass players don't ever play on the 23rd & 24th frets. Bass has to be perfectly intonated for the 2nd octaves to be in tune...440. Otherwise you'll play a note on the 24th fret on any of the 4 strings) and you'll hear a modulating bass wave...meaning it needs neck adjustment and bridge adjustment to make the "wave go by-by." Also, most bass strings only have "balls " on one end, the end where the strings attach to bridge, at right side of bass if you're holding/playing it. But these are specially made "double-balled" strings...metal balls on both ends (they're not actually balls, they look like minature metal tiny cherrios, with hole in middle. One complaint with this Steinberger bass was that they didn't have enough "bottom-end"...low-end hertz...mostly low-mids, mids & highs...but not "low-lows! One reason why Getty finally returned to his #1, his 1972 Fender Jazz Bass, purchased at a Pawn Shop many moons ago. Most brothers, during the old days Motown era, almost exclusively chose Fender Jazz Basses to record all the old Motown hits. They could achieve practically any sound with the 2 on-board Fender Jazz pickups. Even the great Jazz bassists Victor Wooten, who I believe is the bass player on FLAT EARTH, uses custom made high dollar Fodera basses with 2 Fender style split pickups and 1 Fender style Jazz bass pickup. He gets any sound he wants. But one important fact about Fender Jazz basses is this...they're body is made from Alder wood...which produces a "woody" type tone...no the average ear cannot decipher the distinct woody tone from any other bass wood tone but ask a seasoned bass player and they will concur. Btw, Fender produces a "Geddy Lee signature Jazz bass" that looks like his 1972 Fender Jazz bass. Same features. Btw, the reason Geddy Lee rarely uses his Rickenbacker 4001 model bass is because of same reason with Steinberger...not enuff' low bottom end. Even James Brown complained to one of his bass players (not sure which one) that his Rickenbacker didn't have 'nuff low bass tone. Many rock bassists have used Fender Precision basses and were happy with sound from just 2 Precision-Bass split pickups, no Jazz bass pickups, but the tone couldn't achieve that classic "J-Bass" crunchy throaty gnarley toad-frog low-mid magical tone. Oh well, bed time, sorry folks, I had a low-mid Bud Light buzz, perfectly intonated, with decent sustain (no brass nut) lol...brass nut on a bass is...well, a mystery...y'all google it, yes, basses AND guitars have nuts/nutts...back in the old days they were called bone nuts because they were made from actual bone. Not sure if they were made from a rib bone or funny bone...lol, but later were made from composjtes/plastics etc ??? One final note from me, if you're a bass player and you got really good at "slappin' & poppin', yes it impresses people, but the true test is this....listen to "YYZ" by Rush (off their studio album called Moving Pictures) and try to learn and master Geddy Lee's bass lines, perfectly, note for note, no not sort of, I mean 100%...now, that's a good challenge for most bassists and will impress your girlfriend & music teacher...(& yourself!) Then go to Freewill (studio version) then Natural Science (studio version)...then come back and see me. Good luck you Low-End-Lovers. ***Geddy Lee's new book "My Effin Life" is a very interesting read. Really cool book. Adios Amigos and let your "fingers walk and talk" (lyrics from "Virtuality" song on "Test for Echo" album. Badass song! Fun to play! Try it!

@@ethanburgess3475 Ohhhh yeah! I think Geddy Lee sort of went through a very impressive, very progressive and unprecedented lightning fast and untouchable bass-riffy style full of mids & highs with his Wal MK1 bass. It worked out perfect during his super-plucking days and that Wal bass, to me, sounded badass.

They went thru a very short phase of electronics stage in their music , more keyboards less guitar ,this was the only time they went away from just being them selfs ,

RUSH usually had really weird videos in the 80s and beyond. “Time Stands Still” in particular was really ‘out there’. This is in stark contrast to the stuff for Moving Pictures and earlier that was just the band playing the song.
